The future of the Salad Bar is probably even more uncertain than it was before. Sadly, I last visited Clifton Street the day after the owner of this business tragically died during a visit to his native Portugal. He was a little over forty, and the cause of his death is rumoured to be a massive coronary.
Who knows how much the stress of having to contend with a dramatic cut in custom at the Salad Bar, since the implementation of the one way system, has contributed to his early demise? But the reality is that the owner and his wife were building a home for themselves in Portugal, and so their financial commitments were significant. We can only speculate about what impact the councils decision to strangle the flow of traffic to the area has had on this family, but one thing is for sure... the Salad Bar was a lot more profitable prior to the changes in traffic flow, and this is something that every business owner on the street will corroborate. (That is if you can find them! So many of the independent businesses have gone bust in the last year that all you will find is vacant shop spaces, where once their were flourishing little enterprises.)
I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family for their tragic loss. read more
