This was one of the worst years of my life. They have a tradition that allows hazing of the underclass, in the middle of the night around 3-4 in the morning all the seniors run through the hallways pounding on the underclassmen's doors with hammer, bats and other assorted items. It is has been a long standing tradition that is allowed by the school. With such a high rate of women be survivors of assault and other violent acts it is hard to comprehend why a school would allow just behavior. To wake up in the middle of the night and having 100 + people running, screaming and pounding on doors with large items is not an environment I would ever want to be a part of. They enforce strict rules about guests and micro manage the dorms yet they allow and support hazing on campus. I was bullied by security on campus, they would come in and search my room, flipping things over and leaving things a mess. They never found any alcohol but still searched my room several times in a disrespectful manor. There was a major divide between legacy students and non-legacy students. Girls bullied each other on campus and staff would feed into it. Staff and campus leaders (president, student services) are MIA. I never knew anyone who ran campus, heard from the president, any department heads or other helpful staff. I was lost on campus and felt like there was no one to reach out to. There was no strong bond with the departments until JR or SR years. If you are looking for a women's college go to Stephens College. I ended up transferring and was so glad I did! The administration at this institution is deplorable. Living conditions: unacceptable. There's food poisoning that leads to hospital visits; there's mold, snakes, rodents, bugs, etc in the dorms; the floor in my room is bowing, no hot water, some faucets have dark water coming out, ineffective and inefficient systems of heating and air, plaster falling from ceilings, floors that can be so hot that they can melt the bottoms of shoes, etc. Programs and degrees at this school that aren't actually feasible (or really exist), INACCURATE information that's used in the museum and by admissions, such as the HISTORY OF SALEM COLLEGE, especially regarding the college's participation in slavery. Racial and prejudiced slurrs used by some students and faculty that has been left unpunished, no policy for transgender students (and the board is dragging out the decision process for building this policy), and yet-- two weeks after a peaceful sit-in, a new policy is emailed to all of the students about severe restrictions against demonstrations/protests. Students now have to "apply" to demonstrate, in designated spaces during designated times, registering the IDs of students who are participating. If anyone wants to see the documents involved in this issue, such as the call to action that was presented by the students (offering solutions to these problems), emails regarding administrative response to these events, and the document detailing the new demonstrations policy, let me know directly via email. read more

I love Salem and all the amazing individuals who attend it. I come from a legacy of not only Salem College grads but also other Women's colleges. I've had the chance to Study Abroad, with the help of the Financial aid office, and that experience has shaped how I view the world and what I want out of life. My Big has also been a huge influence on my time at Salem as she has helped me discover what I want out of my education and helps me to think about the larger picture. While I study History, I have had the opportunity to focus on my other passion: Music! I know I don't want to pursue a degree in it, but I am so blessed I can still keep up with something that brings me so much joy. While looking for a school to call home, I visited TONS of universities and colleges (23 to be exact). I never received the same genuine kind of warmth that I did at Salem. Salem has been such a blessing in my personal life as well. My Salem sisters and siblings have helped me in my darkest of times. My siblings whom I barely talk with on a regularly are always there for me. I'm not sure if I will ever find that kind of support anywhere else​ in my adult life but I'm so glad I have it while in college. read more

During my four years at Salem College, I found a home away from home. Salem has provided me with abundant opportunities for me to succeed both during and after my time here. The professors genuinely care about their students and go out of their way to make a difference in our lives. Whether it be writing authentic personal letters of recommendations or spending their free time on campus giving individual attention to students, the professors go above and beyond to help their students. The campus is beautiful and is located minutes away from Downtown, lending students ample opportunities for new, exciting experiences. My time at Salem has brought me friends that will last a life time and memories that I will always cherish. While there are some problems I've encountered on campus, the pros far outweigh the cons. Overall, I wouldn't trade my experience at Salem for anything. read more

Salem College has done far beyond what any other school could have done for me. The attention, care, and knowledge of the faculty and staff have helped me to grow beyond what I could have ever expected. In three years, I have had no less than four internship opportunities, several research immersion experiences, and fellowships that will no doubt prove vital in furthering my professional endeavors. The most important part, however, is the community. We are a group of talented, bright, caring individuals. It's become my home in ways I cannot begin to explain. It's currently experiencing many changes, but no doubt the community is emerging stronger as a result. I sincerely believe this is a unique place, one with innumerable merits that reach far beyond its yelp reviews. read more

Lol, you want to go here? DON'T. The food gives people regular food poisoning, the showers barely work, the buildings are falling apart. Not to mention the racism, sexism (yes, at a women's institution, there's fucking sexism), transphobia, xenophobia, etc etc. It only gets worse. They listen to the alums rather than the actual current students and they only care about the money, not the community. A lot of the students here are really great and there is a sense of siblinghood, HOWEVER it is not inclusive, it is not happy, everyone is miserable. It's not worth it. read more

My experience at Salem has not only equipped me with a valuable education but with a community. Having professors who are invested in my education and who help me succeed in whatever way that they can has been an invaluable resource. The friends and connections that I have made from Salem's close-knit community will continue to sustain and support me as I graduate and begin my career path. If I had to choose Salem again, I would without hesitation. This is the place to grow, make change, and develop as an individual student and as a member of a community. read more

Don't do it. Don't come here. Getting bullied by people constantly and reaching out for help and you don't get any. No proper help for mental and physical health. The food makes people get sick.. ALL the time. (by the way, no good options for people with dietary needs) Moldy rooms and showers, moldy AC UNITS.. Administration is just selling the school to make it look better.. in reality it is the worst school I've been to. I cannot wait to get out of here. read more

No trans policy, moldy food and no food options for anyone with dietary restrictions, dirty showers with cold water, and on top of it all, administration REFUSES to listen to and respect the students that fund the college. Moldy showers, food that makes you sick, all sorts of bigotry allowed from students AND faculty. This school is not worth attending. Save yourself, or your child, from attending and send them to UNCG instead. read more
