I got my very first tattoo here on June 15th, 2025 during their flash fundraiser for Learn to Cope. I have been wanting a tattoo for some time, and I always wanted to get it done in Salem, specifically here at Salem Ink. I cannot say enough amazing things about this business and the people that work there. It was a very smooth check in process, and they had many wonderful flash designs to choose from. The ambience was great as well, calming, artistic, and it smelled amazing in there! I was nervous, as expected, since it was my first tattoo. The wonderful Alexis was so kind and comforting and made my first experience very memorable. She is amazing at what she does, and it was a pleasure to get to talk with her. Our tattoos faded before they finished scabbing -- mine rejected and was about 1/3 gone and my wife's was pretty much non existent. I'll probably just have to fix it with a stick and poke kit as we are from out of town and I was told we could come back within 60 days to have it touched up -- but it takes us 11 hours to drive there. Needless to say we never returned. I looked up some other reviews on this establishment, it seems tourists get the shaft often. They said to call at 5pm and when we did they told us to go in. We went in and they were so rude and said they don't have time and couldn't be bothered to look at the waiting list. This was after someone called us and told us to come in. They made us wait all day to get a tattoo, and then an hour before closing they call us to come back and made us feel like we were being indecisive and couldn't do the tattoo. If they were rushing they could've told us they were closing. We literally walked out and left. They were rude and didn't have any manners. They don't work with you and can't even draw or do inspiration pieces. We showed them pieces and they said "you have to make up your mind" many artists create, give you feedback, and share their expertise. None of those things happened here. When giving them the font (which is courier new) they didn't know what that was. Then the image they printed was spaced out horribly, and didn't fit in the space that we specifically told them we wanted it. When we left we called another shop and they were able to get it all done in 20 minutes. They were also closing an hour before we got there. This was the professionalism we were expecting. This place is lucky that they're in Salem, MA because they should not be getting any business otherwise. The professionalism, customer service, and artistry skill was inadequate at the VERY BEST. If you can go anywhere else, do so. This business doesn't deserve your time or your money. read more

We walked past this place on our way to our air b&b and saw the window flash pieces. Around 1:30pm we put our names on the door for walk-in appointments and by 5:15pm we got a call to come get tattooed. Super chill vibes in there and a very comfy waiting space. Place was clean and staff was very friendly, my wife got her tattoo here as well. Hers came out perfect which was done by one of the female artists there. Mine however had some issues that I only noticed after taking a picture. The lines were crooked, not straight basically, the image I showed to the artist and what he made were two different things. It honestly looked like no effort was made. Shading came out horrible. In part I should have waited for the female artist to tattoo me cause of her work that I saw done. After kindly asking what could be done, the artist was very dismissive and asked that I come to a later time. as I sit here and wait for my daughter to finish her piece, I wanted to write a review. First off, let me set the scene. while visiting Salem to celebrate my daughter's 18th birthday, I decided what better way than to each get tattoos! Fun, right? So I did some searching and found Salem Ink. It was later at night so I sent an email asking if they took walk ins. we are in a pandemic after all. I woke the next morning to a response from the owner, Loki. He said the best thing to do was to be here right away at open as they can fill up fast. we arrived about 30 minutes after they opened, and got ourselves on the wait list. They asked what we were going to do for oir work. I am a Potterhead, so I just got a simple "always" tattoo. My daughter on the other hand, had a rough sketch of a piece she wanted. Loki took a picture so he could draw them up and have them ready when we were. They quoted that it could be anywhere from a half an Hour to 3 hours. Cool! No problem! So we ran over and did a showing at The Salem Witch Museum. We no sooner finished there and we received a call saying they were ready for us! upon arrival, my daughter realized she left her ID back at the hotel. I was internally screaming at her! Haha! much as one does at their kids in public. Lol. How could she waste this poor guys time drawing something for her!? So inconsiderate. So I went ahead and got my tattoo. They said we may still be able to get hers after we drive an hour and a half round trip to and from the hotel. being the mom that I am, I didn't want her to miss out on this Opportunity. So I drove back to Chelsea to the hotel and then back to the shop. Where they were ready for us as soon as we walked in the door! all through this, Loki was very kind and understanding. He worked with us and never once faltered on his hospitality. He took the fact that this was my daughter's first tattoo and made sure she was comfortable and walked her through the process. Just got my first tattoo here and loved the experience I had with Kat. She was super patient and understanding, and walked me through everything and made sure I was comfortable the entire time. She made sure I was happy with the design but also made sure to make it something that would last well. She even gave me her iPad to watch Netflix on so I would be the most comfortable. I went in to this shop on Saturday, February 3 for a walk-in. Ricky met me at the front. I showed him the design I wanted, pre-drawn, and all I wanted was simple black line work. I was concerned with the amount of time it took for him to tattoo about 3"x5" piece. He didn't seen confident in his lines. I had hoped I was nervous for no reason - but now it has healed, I'm really disappointed. Some lines are blown out. It's very uneven. Unfortunately I am giving a bad review . I found out quickly It's a bunch of semi inexperienced kids running what could be a nice place. Trying to make 2 appointments what should have been easy appointments with one Artist's schedule was almost to difficult for her to do . After a very difficult process which I had lots of open times was cancelled and trying to reschedule proved to be too frustrating. It's unfortunate because the place looks well done just really badly run. There are really great tattoo artists elsewhere and places close by . I'll do more research. I imagine to stay in business you would need to be more customer goals oriented and organized. Don't waste your time with this place. read more

I had my tattoo with Ed just yesterday. My friend and I wanted to get coordinating tattoos in honor of a friend we just lost in the Ghostship fire in Oakland, CA. Our friend had beautiful tattoos all over her body, and it was with those tattoos that they were able to identify her body after the tragedy. It seemed fitting that we get something to honor her, and we really wanted to go together. My friend got her appt with Loki and then I made mine with Ed. Ed was awesome, he came in on his day off for me, which I SO appreciated. He was very accommodating with me over e-mail. I brought my own design with me, and he gave me no crap about it. (other artists have given me guff for bringing a design all done) He offered suggestion on the sizing, adjusted as necessary, and then he did the tattoo flawlessly in about 40 minutes. He also went over an old tattoo I had to sharpen it up! I ended up with 2 fresh tattoos in less than an hour. He was very chill, kind, and professional. I waited around the shop for the next 4 hours while my friend was getting her tattoo done by Loki. Loki was kind enough to let me sit in the room with them for the second half of her tattoo. Which was really nice, since we were there together. The shop is very clean, the artwork they have is incredible. From waiting around, I got to witness the staff and artists interact with other clients and walk-ins and I was impressed with all of them. I wanted to get a tattoo in Salem to commemorate my trip. I had emailed another tattoo parlor (both directly from their website and then a separate email) only to be ignored. I reached out to Salem Ink and they explained their policy with walk-ins as well as pre-booking appointments with a deposit. They answered my emails in a timely and professional manner. When I got there, I was greeted by a kind woman at the front desk and explained what I was looking to get. Matt, who was standing nearby, agreed to draw something up for me. It was exactly what I wanted and he printed out about four different sizes for me to choose from. My girlfriend and I went to Salem Ink about a week ago on a whim and we are so glad we did! We looked up the various tattoo joints in Salem and decided to make our way to Salem Ink where we greeted by one of the artists Mike. He was super helpful and got right to work asking what we were looking for. We both decided on wrist tattoos that involved basic line work, mine was a bit more difficult on account of requiring perfectly parallel lines. Mike was able to work with my design, apply a stencil once and finish the whole job in about 30 minutes. Loki, the owner, did my girlfriend's tattoo, chatted with her about skin care, herbal remedies and generally made our experience there great! Wow! To have to give this place one star is too many. This was the worst customer service I've experienced in a very long time. With how rudely the front desk person treated me just to buy t-shirts I wouldn't buy gum here let alone get tattooed. I'm here from Arizona visiting family. I'm shopping for souvenirs to bring home. Three t-shirts were in the window that I knew my boyfriend would love. I wanted all three but I wanted to see a shirt to know what sizes that I wanted. I was informed that I needed to know what shirt. I wanted all three, but they are from different people. So, I wanted to see what a large looked like to purchase the appropriate sizes. He reiterated that they were packed in the back. So, it was just too much trouble. I wish I could give this place no stars like some others have written. I received a TERRIBLY executed tattoo. Not only was the tattoo completely butchered and looks like an angry four year old drew it, but the customer service is appalling and disrespectful. The artist, who is also the OWNER is completely rude, dismissive, and does not take responsibility for their role as a shop owner and artist. Inking someone is big deal and It is absolutely disheartening the lack of integrity and respect of this place. HOW WILL YOU REMEMBER YOUR MOM? Ours passed last Christmas Eve. Unexpected and heart-breaking, we are still slogging our way through the loss. My sister and I have talked for months about the best way to honor her and maybe there is something about the stories Massachusetts is ripe with - messages from the other side. Because after finally mustering the courage to go through some of Mom's things, we discovered one of the original "selfies." It was a self portrait she drew in kindergarten 72 years ago - perfectly preserved except for a tiny tear. She named it "The Flower Girl" and proudly printed her name above the drawing. This was it - what we needed. We took the drawing to Salem Ink. Both of us are originally from Massachusetts and my sister now lives close to Salem. Mom loved the witchy town and took us so many times as children. We entered the clean and upscale art gallery/tattoo shop with our drawing and Adam - our artist - was just as enthusiastic about our idea as we were and spent the time we needed to plan placement and size with us. He recreated Mom's drawing perfectly - every little girl detail - followed the style of her kid printing to complete the first letter of her name that had been torn on the original. Fastidious in prep and cleaning of his tools, personable and entertaining - we really enjoyed the evening as well as the final result. Mom, we miss you. Out of all the shops I've gone to over the years, this is by far the best one I've gone too. I've gotten several tattoos done by Loki and 1 tattoo done by Adam one of their apprentices. I always leave very happy with the ink I've gotten. And I've had friends get some ink after after seeing what I've gotten done by Loki. The original design was overly complicated and loki knew exactly how to tone it down to exactly what I wanted, without me having to rely on my nonexistent creative skills. His suggestion of shading made the design that much more awesome. I was in town for a few days and love to get a tattoos when I'm on vacation so I went into the shop to see if they had an available appointment. The nicest way to put it is the guy who was working at the front counter was a snot. I hate leaving bad reviews, but want to share my disappointing experience so that anyone in a similar boat can make an informed decision about where to take their business. BEWARE: if you care a lot about the design you want, and want good communication with the artist before your appointment (assuming you're not a walk-in) and basically want to be treated with respect, do yourself a favor and just avoid this place!! Everything started off well. I went in to Salem Ink mid-March for my first tattoo -- I wanted a mid-sized custom one and had a basic idea. I looked through the artist portfolios, and Cassandra's work really appealed to me. Since she was there at the desk, we were able to have our initial consultation about the tattoo design right then. We got along well and she seemed to "get" what I wanted. We made an appointment for a few weeks later on a Saturday, along with a follow-up appointment (it would have needed two sessions). I was really glad when she told said she would send me the design about a week before the appointment so I could see it, since that was really important to me. I didn't say at the time how important, but since she said she would send it to me, I trusted her word. The week of the appointment rolled around and no news, so I reached out. One day before the appointment, I got part of the design -- half of it line-drawn, half of it a really loose pencil sketch. I said I wasn't comfortable getting a permanent tattoo done without having a day or two to sit with it and make sure it was what I'd want for the rest of my life. I decided to push the first session to the second appointment we'd made for a couple weeks later, hoping that'd give her enough time to finish the design. Well, that didn't happen. At this point, I was feeling ignored. A couple days before the second appointment was supposed to happen, I decided to simply cancel the tattoo after still not hearing from her. She sent a nice reply (albeit two days later) hoping to work things out and offering to send me the scans of the sketches. I said that would be great and also hoped to work things out for perhaps a different tattoo or other solution (didn't really want to lose my $100 deposit), but then I never heard back. That was more than two weeks ago. Throughout this process, I would email sometimes several times in a row, only to go days without hearing back. I'm just so disappointed and frustrated with everything that's happened. I understand now it is often shop policy not to show the final design until the day of the appointment, but that was never clearly shared with me. When Cassandra wasn't able to fulfill her promise about sending the design early, she didn't even reach out to tell me, I had to ask. It's just not considerate, or good customer service. And to go days, even weeks at a time without receiving email replies? Unprofessional. All this and to be out my $100 deposit, it's just a big regret. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!! I went here because Witch City Ink was closed and it was the biggest mistake of my life. I seriously should have waited. I spent $150 on a Beauty and the Beast tattoo (The rose in the case). They BUTCHERED it. The case looks like I drew it, the shading in the back looks like a bruise, its just one big mess I'm so pissed off. I went to Witch City Ink and they just shook their heads in disbelief of these people. Witch City Ink is now posting my tattoo to show why you SHOULDNT go there and I'm not offended at all it is so true!! Witch City Ink is the place to go, they are so willing and EXTREMELY able to fix it I trust them with my life. Yuki or Yoki whatever the fuck his name is did my tattoo. Just don't go there period. You know how it is with getting major ink done: you think about your design forever, figure out how to articulate it, put aside money/time, research the hell out of shops and online portfolios. I did all that--and made the significant mistake of choosing Salem Ink. Matt's portfolio looked fantastic, and his style seemed like a perfect fit. And I'd been especially excited because Loki, the owner, took the time to record an intro on the site about how he'd had bad experiences with artists who acted like he wasn't worth their time, so he wanted to open a shop where "everyone who walks through my door" was treated professionally and "with the respect they deserve." I filled out the required contact form fields, including both e-mail *and* phone number, said how excited I was for the reasons above, and described what I wanted. I also said I preferred to communicate by e-mail, but to feel free to call me if needed to set up an appointment. I received a reply from Loki within two days. His response, which came from a Hotmail account(!), just said he would pass on the message to Matt. Okay: so far not exactly seeing the professionalism referred to in that intro, but whatever, writing isn't everyone's strong suit. Also, I'd never worked with a shop with a booking system consisting of just "passing the message on"--you have, like, a receptionist/central booking person who has access to the artists' calendars, and you keep on top of shit that way. Or you provide the artist's direct e-mail address, though I certainly get why that might not be the top choice. But again, whatever--maybe Salem Ink finds this system works for them, especially for online inquiries. I received that initial reply from Loki on June 26. By July 15, I had not heard anything. I wrote to Loki again. Again I received a prompt reply. Loki called the fact that I'd not heard from Matt "odd" and said he may have just gotten "busy" because, essentially, their shop is just so darned popular. Then he told me to "re-send any message" I wanted to give Matt and he would pass it along. Er, I already gave the whole spiel in the contact form during my initial inquiry, but apparently they didn't have it anymore? So I went through the whole thing again. But, you know, it's cool--stuff happens. I sent my reply on July 20. By August 4, I had still not heard anything. I wrote to Loki again. I explained I'd chosen his shop in large part based on the emphasis on respect, so the lack of follow-up was really disappointing. I said I definitely understood being busy but by this point a good chunk of the summer had gone by and I could've had a consult with someone else and/or gotten on someone's waiting list, but chose to stick with Salem Ink, relying on his explicit customer service philosophy. I suggested they might find a way to improve customer communication. Loki responded promptly. He once again called the situation "odd" and once again cited things occasionally getting missed because they were "busy." He said he'd forwarded my information to Matt "a few times now" and would speak to him. He got back to me again a few hours later. Apparently Matt said he'd replied to me after the last message Loki had sent him (whenever that was) but he didn't hear back from me, and he didn't follow up because--wait for it--they were "busy." Loki said maybe Matt's message had gone to my junk folder. (Nope. As I told Loki, I'd done several searches on all my e-mail platforms. Unless Matt used an obscure name/subject line--which, given the level of professionalism here.... But also, given Loki's next comments, I doubt the junk-folder scenario had any merit.) Loki said maybe Matt's message had failed. (In which case, there would have been a delivery failure e-mail--several, in fact.) Loki said maybe Matt *mistyped my e-mail address*! (There's this copy/paste function? And also, at that point, it really is just excuses and really is completely your fault.) Loki "didn't know"; but "whatever the problem was, I'm sorry again we could not help you out." Um. It wasn't that you couldn't have helped me out. You just DIDN'T help me out. Because the artist was so "busy" I was not worth the time to follow up with. This...sounds familiar. Technology can fail, no doubt about it. But also: remember the bit about the required phone number field in the contact form, and my emphasis on calling me if needed? (They could've even just asked me to call them.) I pointed this out to Loki, albeit much more cordially. No response. So. Not so much with the respect, after all: not for my effort, time, or desire to have the positive experience promised. I live in Cambridge and can't drive, so just dropping by wasn't feasible...but maybe if you actually do physically walk through the doors of Salem Ink, you'll get that experience. WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING DON'T BE A FOOL, READ BEFORE GETTING ANY WORK DONE AT SALEM INK. My girlfriend's first tattoo ever was done by "LOKI," the proprietor of Salem Ink and was a small Celtic piece on her lower ankle that turned out nicely and is used by "LOKI" for advertising in his portfolio book in the studio at Salem Ink. Her second tattoo was also done by "LOKI." However, unfortunately for her, the results were less than desirable and needless to say there is no photo of that piece in the portfolio in the shop. The piece was to be a Japanese Water Color of some flowers going up and down her arm and shoulder. The piece was disjointed at best. Unconnected lines and improper shading were apparent throughout. The corolla (center) of each flower, and there were many flowers, was not properly blended into the rest of the flower and as a result every flower looked as though it had a spider in the center of it, see attached photo and you be the judge. The branches that the flowers grew out of were disconnected and in short had unfinished lines. She walked around for a while before she had another artist from "Shining Star" work to fix the piece. The piece was greatly improved but still not complete as she could not sit long enough to complete the much needed overhaul. A couple of weeks ago I went to Salem Ink on behalf and unbeknownst to my girlfriend and I placed a deposit on a time for her to get the work completed. The appointment was scheduled for March 21rst and was a bit of a birthday gift to her being that her birthday is March 23 and she had been expressing a repeated desire to get the work done. After looking at the portfolios online at Salem Ink it appeared that Adam Harmon would be a good candidate to complete the piece which was further augmented at my girlfriends request during her second sitting by the second artist who did the outline of several more flowers. Based upon the previous work done by "LOKI" my girlfriend did not want to risk another finger painting session that she would have to wear for life. On Friday the 21rst my girlfriend had her sitting and was very pleased with the work that Adam Harmon had performed. He completed the flowers which had been outlined by the second artist at Shining Star ( who was no longer at that place of business ), he added 2 beautiful Dragon flies and lastly filled in the gaps left between the color and flower outlines of the original flower pieces done by "LOKI." While my girlfriend sat for her session with Adam I jumped into another chair and had my fourth piece on my body done and I am very pleased with the work that Matt Stahura did on me. Here comes the punch line. While having pizza at Galaxy pizza in Salem the day following our tattoos my girlfriend received a text from Adam Harmon, the artist that did the final work on her piece, in response to a THANK YOU TEXT she sent to him expressing her gratitude for the work he performed. Here is the text word for word the artist sent her; "hey want you to know, you kind of caused some drama here at the shop by not being honest with me about how much Loki had done on the Lotus flowers. There is a general sense of respect between artists, especially artists who work together that we don't just jump into each others work. I had to do a lot of explaining this morning and it got my day off to a bad start. I feel like you probably knew what you were doing by sending in your man and having him tell me some BS and then you not coming or sending me any images. I asked until like a min. before the tattoo. Anyway, it was douchy at worst and ignorant at best on your part. And didn't make my day any better. Keep that in mind when your planning future work. Thank you" So apparently when "LOKI" walked in during my girlfriends sitting in which she was augmenting the original piece with 2 Dragonflies, filling in the flower outlines done by the second artist at Shining Star and finishing the incomplete crayola work where the color had fell short of the flower outline and the corolla's looked like spider from a Salvador Dali painting "LOKI" apparently had a bug up his ass due to a terminally fragile ego or he simply felt that since he had done a previous work on her that he now owned her hide like a piece of canvas and she needed permission to get any further work done on, near or around the previous mess he made. I realize there is etiquette in tattooing like many other professions but when your work falls short you need to shut up. It would be like a pitcher giving up 20 runs in the first three innings then complaining about the peanut vendor in section C of the stadium. As far the inappropriate text sent by Andy Harmon, form your own opinion. And oh yeah, he was tipped well. read more

Upon reading some reviews months ago before I was 18, I was skeptical on getting my first tattoo at Salem Ink. However, I decided to go for it. I chose Loki the owner to have the honors of tattooing the Iron Giant on my left arm, he did such an amazing job and would recommend to anyone wanting a tattoo. I love my piece so much I decided to get another tattoo only a week later! So overall, great artists to choose from, a beautiful shop with a great vibe, fast emails, texts, and phone calls. Definitely will be getting later ink here in the future. read more

The pricing was great! Bare minimum is $100. They require an $80 cash deposit for the appt. I had Ashlie and she was amazing. It was my first tattoo and I was a little nervous. She walked me through every step. She did multiple designs for me until I was satisfied. I would definitely recommend her! read more
