An absolute joke this department has become. On 6/21/2026 there was driver who hit a fire hydrant and left. They found the person up the street outside their vehicle and gave them a sobriety test. I called for an ambulance and I believe 10 police SUV 's showed up instead as I told the dispatcher that my Son threatened to kill me. At the time I didn't know he was using meth again. He's on life support and the Drs let me know if we didn't get a heart very soon he would die in months. I thought he was dying from his disease. The room was destroyed. He broke 3 TV's and just made a mess of my home. In my entire life I have never been treated awful by Police anywhere until that night. They treated me as if I had done something wrong. I've never committed a crime never arrested no rap sheet. Joseph's is a mile long. He was high on meth and they should have recognized that as professionals right? They did not care about the threat and they would not remove him from my home. They left a meth addict here to kill me. I wrote to the Chief of Police to ask why this happened. Why would they protect a criminal and not someone who is retired from a Law Enforcement Agency. No response yet and it been eight days Now the Sheriff's office and the CHP are wonderful. The salinas police department is open from 8am-5 pm yet I have called multiple days in a row at various times through out their open hours only to reach the voicemail multiple times. They have yet to look into the police report I have filed and have yet to pick up the footage from the building in where the crime was committed. The suspects were caught on camera and still are walking around without any consequences all because our police department is incompetent. Waste of tax payers money. read more

Refused to follow a child custody court order. I dont understand how we are demanded to follow the law when the police themselves refuse to uphold laws even THEY say is what needs to be followed & REFUSE TO. even CPS has told them her father Louie Jimenez Jr & his wife Salina Salinas is unlawfully witholding my 10 year old against court order & with no court papers signed by a judge. 1st attempt officer Maldonado helped but couldn't help me get my daughter due to a missing staple in the court order. So I was asked to get a newer un damaged order, which I did & the 2nd attempt the next day officer lynd, velasquez, & Munoz refused to enforce the court order. To start off, the address on yelp and google for the police department is wrong. They moved locations and failed to update that information. Now, I had called around 8:00am this morning asking how to get a release form, and was told that I need to pay 15$ and that wasn't a problem. I asked the admissions and records department if I could pay cash and the phone operated said yes. I get to the new location of the police department, after having to ask what the new address is over the phone, and was told by the front desk clerk that I am NOT allowed to pay cash and he even said that they've never accepted cash. Being told misinformation over the phone not only wasted my time, but both clerks where rude and told me I was waisting my time by simply trying to explain to them that I was misinformed. After asking for contact information for a manager of the admissions and records department, the front desk clerk kept speaking over me telling me I'm waisting my time and he'll just send an email out about me being misinformed. I had to ask the other clerk for a phone number knowing he wasn't going to send any email with his condescending tone. Th episode department is supposed to protect the citizens, not give them attitude wherever they want. Not to mention they don't even have the right address for the public to find! You would think being a police department, they'd have it together but they're obviously disorganized, rude and overall seem to just not want to help the public. A company's image is always shown with the first face you see, and the Salinas Police Department first face so happens to be rude and conveys he/she is just too tired and doesn't care to help anyone. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and moved to the Salinas area a few years back. Reading the reviews for the Salinas PD really surprised me. If you think these posts are depiction of a poor force, you need to travel more and experience what other communities and countries endure. The PD is poor because you called in a loud music complaint - (probably one of many they receive nightly). And you can't provide an address, really?Right there, bottom of the list. My guess is if it was that important you could have figured it out. The PD wasn't there to stop a motorist from running down a pedestrian? Guess what... happens everyday in the Bay Area and PD can't be everywhere all the time. Yes, I agree traffic enforcement needs to be stepped up but more importantly, people need to take responsibility for their actions which includes being aware of what's around them. Put down your cellphone, put your make-up on at home, leave the burger in the bag till you stop the car. Distractions feed the problem. In closing I'll offer, what prompted me to visit this Yelp page was an experience I had last evening while out with friends. We were in a local pub and in walks 4 Salinas PD officers. Of course the mood was silenced as most people looked. Turns out they weren't there for a problem, they were there to be visible and prevent any potential problem. They worked their way through the crowd, stopping to talk to people, shaking hands, then they walked out. It was a good thing and I believe most people in the pub that evening would agree with me. read more

When I went to the police department building they got annoyed by helping people that they took forever to assist on purpose. Both time you could see the cops inside just chatting and playing around while they made people wait or hesitated to offer people help. Make sure to record any interaction when dealing with the SPD. Of course we can't generalize the whole station but unfortunately the many bad officers outweigh the good ones. I am surprised anyone would give a police department that cannot be reached on a Saturday or Sunday 5 stars. Although I own a gun, I try my best not to do their job. I have a neighbor who does not understand civility and the city ordinance stating that it does not matter what time it is, someone cannot disturb someone else's quiet hours. I have gone and talked to him in Spanish because obviously it is Salinas and this person said, "go ahead, get the police". We are on the verge of bankruptcy and homelessness, and we were slammed with two late vehicle registration tickets within less than 24 hours. I wasn't even trying to fight it, but Officer Houston decided to fight for us and now these tickets are canceled. It is very rare to find someone that genuinely wants to help. read more

I'm normally supportive of law enforcement and have no sympathy for violent rioters. That being said, SPD leaves quite a lot to be desired. We go no help at all when our car was broken into in fall of '15, but they are quick to cite you for something as harmless as parking across the sidewalk. The parking where I live is bad because the houses lack proper driveways, and since I now can't park across the sidewalk in front of the house, I often have to park nearly a block away, possibly putting my safety at risk when I have to do so at night. But I guess parking partly on the sidewalk is far more dangerous, and the city needs to earn cash somehow. Oh, and they also wouldn't take a report after two of my employer's company cars got smashed over the weekend by some idiot lost control while racing through the area. read more

I was targeted by a gang 2014-2017 when they moved in next door to me. I begged the Salinas Police Department for help, reporting illegal activities such as but not limited to verbal threats of violence, sexual threats, gunfire, harassment, methanphetamine production and use and sales, etc. I had pictures. I had dates. I had times. I had other witnesses. And the police did not want to be bothered. With no report (the officers refused to give me one) Police Chief Friese & Mayor Gunter refused to meet with me or friends who tried to speak on my behalf. I lost my home of 2 generations and ended up having to flee for my life when a shotgun was held on me in my front yard and am not allowed to live there nor return to get my car or belongings for fear for my life, have been moving from secure location to secure location since. Officers reacted in ways that escalated the violence, took 6 hours or more to arrive (if they came) and left me alone to deal with it. The Salinas Police taught me to not report, not trust police, to fear police officers now. There are wonderful officers in the SPD, they are overworked & see WAY too many very bad things; it does not excuse...this. I did not have the luck to find these wonderful people. Please document names, badge numbers at every interaction (I did not know this, was overwhelmed with trying to survive). I wish each of you kindness and safety, including the officers who could not be bothered to exhibit the same towards victims like myself. read more

Called the Salinas PD at 10am requesting an officer to take a report. After 3 phone calls to them and 5 1/2 hours Salinas PD still has not responded. Doesn't say much for the PD in this town. Can't tell me that they are so busy that they can not respond to calls in a timely manner. read more

I used to have a lot of respect for Salinas PD, but their level of service and respect for our community has really deteriorated. Having been the victim of several recent property crimes, installing a monitored security system seemed the next logical step. Only after purchasing the system did I learn that Salinas PD wants to charge me for an alarm permit and an annual fee thereafter. They make you sign a contract drafted by their attorney that basically says they make no guarantee that they will actually respond, and they will not be held responsible for not responding. What kind of organization demands that you pay them money in exchange for nothing in return, and then insists that they will not held accountable for anything? That would be Salinas PD. I also think a lot of their officers have unwarranted egos and treat the community poorly as a result. Maybe someday Salinas will have a high-functioning police agency that respects its residents again, but it will take a major organizational shift for that to occur. read more
