When we checked in, the reception bar sitting area was jammed with people. This made for a fun atmosphere. There is also a restaurant area where you can order food. The kitchen is open 24/7 which makes it very convenient for travelers, and a breakfast buffet starts at 4 am which was perfect for us since we had a 6:30 am in flight. The room was comfortable and clean. The only downside was the heat and ac were not working. It felt like a window had been left open. Literally like an icebox. The manager was very helpful. She immediately came up to help, checked us into another room, helped us carry our things to the new room and even told us to call again if there were more problems. I wish this type of service was offered everywhere.

It's also the same distance to the Express train that takes you into London just under an hour. Check in was quick and smooth. For being Diamond Members, we received a coupon for a free drink or snack at the bar next to check in. Our room was 117- an accessible room. It's spacious with a pullout couch. Sadly, the AC wasn't the strongest and the room itself is a little run down. The breakfast buffet is great! There's juice, coffee, waffles, pastries, toast, meats, yogurt, cereal, eggs, beans, mushrooms, and more!

Cigarette butts littered all over the busy "non smoking" family areas. Dusty windowsills all over the hotel, squeaking floorboards in the new building, slamming doors, very strong smell of chlorine on floor 2 above the pool area. Busted springing the beds, inedible food - chicken salad with microwaved chicken that was rock hard - had to be sent back, wasn't taken off the bill, then had to remind the staff that it wasn't edible so they took off eventually. Loud obnoxious groups of men mouthing off bad language with no care who was around them, including children. Slow check in, staff members not bothered about the line forming. Hot rooms, small desk fans provided - not adequate for the size of rooms. Dirty walls, chipped tiles in the pool area. Wooden banisters peeling paint. Cobwebs with months worth of dust forming on them. Grubby carpets. Overall give this place a kiss until the whole hotel has a huge renovation and some money spent on it. Hotel inspectors needed to up the game - such a shame would score zero stars

You see, my mum was six and living in Hampstead Gardens Suburb during the war. Places were being bombed all around London. The government issued a voluntary evacuation of children to the country. My nana wasn't for it, but my grandad convinced her it was for the best. While in London we took a road trip to Ware which in her foggy recallection is where she was evacuated to. I worked for Marriott HQ (here in the States) at the time and got a great rate on Hanbury Manor. Our room wasn't in the main manor house, but in the Garden Court. My mom, now in her mid seventies felt a sense of familiarity. When she asked at the front desk if there was ever a convent in this area they said, "You're staying where it used to be!' We were actually in the very spot where she was processed for her temporary living arrangements! There are even tombstones of the old nuns out in the back. It was pure luck that we ended up here. As for the hotel, it is a lovely place to stay to get away. If you are a golfer or spa addict you'll be contented, but if not you'll be bored to tears if you stay more than two nights because as far as I could tell, the only nightlife is the nearby pub, Sow & Pigs, which incidentally is across the street from the house she lived in for her time away from the city. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We had dinner twice here as there are no other options and it was rainy during most of our stay. Our guest quarters were pretty average; we stayed in the Garden Court which we were transported to via a golf cart. It would have been nice to stay in the manor house itself. I am glad we got to visit Hanbury Manor. It was certainly a trip down Memory Lane for my mum.

Little Hallingbury Mill - The Mill

I had been lucky in that I was looking for a 'different' hotel for a single night stay after a 65th birthday party in Sawbridgeworth. I wanted to get away from the Travelodge and Welcome Inn for a change. Now, don't take that wrongly, we love both of those hotel chains but, on this occasion, wanted something different. A really friendly, welcome as we arrived, by Richard. Owner of The Mill with his wife Miranda. Miranda, we were told was the brains in the kitchen. As it was a quiet time of year we were upgraded to a larger room in the house. Lovely large room with all the amenities needed, including bathrobes. Comfy bed, and I mean comfy. Neither of us wanted to leave that bed in the morning. Flat screen TV, coffee/tea making facilities. Free, fast WiFi. All of this for a very reasonable price of just under £50. An extra £7.50 each gave us a wonderful breakfast starter for the day. There had to be a 'down side' to these prices so it was going to be the breakfast, we thought. No way, cereals available with orange juice in the huge glass jug. Wonderful cafetiere of nicely ground coffee and then the full English. A plateful of beans, mushrooms, tomato, egg, bacon (so tasty) and sausage (must have been local) with toast. Set us up for the day. Speaking to Richard he said that the Mill was an ongoing project of theirs. Restaurant, Wild Hart, with its local game and venison dishes. We look forward to giving it a try in the near future. I can see that booking will have to be made to get a table. Great stay and I would recommend The Mill to anyone if they are looking for somewhere to stay in the area.

There are about 18 rooms, with a tiny little bar and dining area. It was a perfect size for a party celebrating our friends' 40th year. Serving various (bottled) unfamiliar ales and brews alongside your normal lager downstairs, service was very friendly and the staff seemed genuinely eager to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Note: in the morning mist, this place will knock your socks off. We had a buffet for the party so I can't comment on the meals themselves, although I was a little disappointed that the hot breakfast was limited for non meat eaters even though I had checked ahead, but no matter, what I had was ample. I also stayed overnight - there are two sets of rooms - one in the main body of the mill itself, and the rest in a separate house only a few metres away. I stayed in the separate building - which I was a little grateful for - the rooms are nicely decked out but it is noisy given the age of the property (1874) so be warned if you are a light sleeper, especially if you are in room 18 (by the main door), as I was. Plenty of tea and coffee in the room, plus your own teapot, which I made plenty good use of.

Hertford House Hotel - Buffalo strips- sticky

Staff were welcoming and very friendly. We asked if we could linger until the lunch menu was up and they were happy to accomodate us and continuously refilling our water when asked. The place felt family friendly with crayons and colouring in sheets for children. Serving breakfast and lunch with a children's menu available too. Buffalo strips- sticky Sadly they ran out of chicken wings as the original dish was suppose to be Buffalo fried chicken wings in sticky sauce. However instead of cancelling the order they asked if they could replace the dish with strips instead which was kind of them. However these weren't very fresh and more likely to be refried after being in the freezer. The batter was so dense it became more chewy than crispy and the meat was incredibly dry and stringy. The dish itself lacked seasoning going overboard with the lemon and drowned out the maple syrup sticky sauce that it was drenched in. Not very nice at all. Chicken milanese Once again the chicken tasted old and the frozen kind refried. It was flavourless, dense and crusty with the dry batter making it more harder to eat. The meat was so tough it became hard to slice through it with a knife. Weird how the herbs on top was more for show as it didn't do anything in flavour. The side spaghetti was the same old generic tomato sauce, sharp tasting and very one noted. HH cheeseburger- aged beef patty, cheddar, potato, onions and secret sauce A very average burger. The brioche bun was slightly dense but at least held everything in place. Beef patty was really juicy and cooked perfectly medium rare as asked. Shame it wasn't mixed in with herbs or onions to bring out more flavour in the patty as flavour was what it was lacking. Bacon was nice for depth and sweetness but a bit too chewy making it hard to bite through the burger without taking the whole slice out. The secret sauce was very nice and had some sweet heat to but I wasn't enough to stop from the burger from being quite dry from the dense bun. Cheese needed a little longer to melt to give its full flavour. Chips were more successful being cut thin and crisp on the outside whilst fluffy inside. Came seasoned and were quite moreish. It's a shame such a lovely restaurant with such a friendly team was so poor with it's dishes. The place was pretty empty on a weekend lunch which says a lot. Probably when they don't have much stuff that are fresh. Still even with frozen food you can still create something quite tasty but unfortunately dishes were really bland and poorly cooked.
