After reading many of the reviews posted on Yelp and Salon Chanterre's website, an appointment with Shiri was booked for a conditioning treatment, trim, and natural style (twistout). Upon arrival, Shiri and the other ladies in the salon were very welcoming & professional. My wait was minimum before being called to Shiri's chair, which she confirmed getting a conditioning treatment would be most beneficial. After being shampooed and receiving conditioning treatment (using steam), I could feel a great difference in my natural hair . Overall, I was very satisfied with my salon experience and my twistout turned out way better than when I do it at home. My hair looked much healthier which is important to me. Twist extension. Courteous. The front and sides of my hair looked nice but I didn't think about why she didn't show me the back of my hair like other stylist do. Then I realized the length in the back way off. Didn't match shoulder length of the sides. Way Off! Luckily there was some stretch ability to the hair to make it work. Got a relaxer and color at this appointment.....fabulous job as usual! I started going to Cheri some years ago to repair my broken-off, brittle hair from home processing. I have had natural hair, relaxer, color, sew-in, and braids at various times from Cheri. My hair was damaged when I started, but now very healthy after consistent visits. Relaxing environment and knowledgable stylist. I would recommend (and have recommended) this salon to others. Appointments fill up, so book ahead of time. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. So I called to set up my appointment and was given a specific date and time (a week from when I called). Unfortunately, I lost the piece of paper that I wrote the information on so I called Chanterre (Cherie?) to see when my appointment was going to be. She informed me that she did not have her appointment book, but would look at it later and give me a call back that same day. Hours and hours passed, and I heard nothing from her. If I were smart, I should have run then. However, going off of the reviews on yelp I decided to try it again. I called again in the morning and was finally able to get Chanterre to tell me when my appointment day and time was. I mean you would think that she would have called back like she said she would.......`zsj877\]9 So I go in for my appointment, Salon Chanterre by Eric is a relatively large salon but there was only one client and one stylist (Chanterre). I wonder whether she is the only stylist at the salon??? It seems that everytime that I go into the salon, she is the only one there...... When I went in for the appointment I wanted her to give me a consult of my hair as it is very damaged. Instead of a consult, she told me to go straight back to the shampoo bowl and proceeded to tell me what style I should get in addition to "a treatment". How can you tell me what style I should get when you have not even really looked at my hair?????? At this point I was too through. I let her shampoo me and sit under the dryer. After the dryer cut off, I asked her to blow my hair out so I could hurry up and leave. This was the worst first time appointment I have EVER had with a stylist. Chanterre seemed very distracted and out of it. In between working on my hair, Chanterre was working on a sew in that cost the client $250. Unfortunately, the clients hair looked greasy and super fake (and I am thinking what a waste of $250!). I do not recommend this place at all. Not enough stylists, a distracted overpriced hairdresser with no follow through, and an eerily empty salon. STAY AWAY!!!!! NOT WORK THE TIME OR MONEY!!! DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR BRAIDED HERE! It's always a bad sign when a black salon is nearly empty on a Saturday morning. I recently sought out Salon Chanterre to have micro braids done. I sent pictures of my style weeks in advance and was assured that they could handle it. When I arrived, the head stylist (the one featured on the website) was churning out wonderful work, so I thought I was in good hands. However, little did I know, the girl "Brittany" braiding my hair, was churning out a mess. It looks like a seven year old braided my hair. The work looks like something a child would do to a barbie head. 4 hours in, I stopped to check on her progress, and I was devastated by the poor quality of work. I was immediately in tears. The head stylist came over and examined the braids. Braided one herself to give Brittany and example, and then let Brittany continue making a mess of my hair. Eventually, Brittany got frustrated and didn't want to continue to finish my hair. She asked the shampoo girl "Nile?" to come help! Brittany showed Nile how to braid micros in 3 minutes. (At this point, I'm having a full meltdown) However, Nile, after a 3-minute training session, ends up producing better work than Brittany did! Nile saved the entire front of my hair. I don't usually complain, but the quality of the braiding at this salon is atrocious! I have to pay a stylist last minute to come fix the entire back of my hair. I sat in a chair for 10 hours and left in tears. There is no way in hell Brittany is licensed to do braiding, and I hope she lost her job so nobody else can be subject to the quality of work that I had to deal with. This salon should not even list braiding services as available unless the head stylist is willing to do them. I will credit the owner Eric for trying to fix the situation and offering for Nile to come in on her day off and redo the back of my hair. His service was professional, and I appreciated his courtesy. However, you could not pay me to go back to this salon. I would rather spend hundreds of dollars to have anybody else do my hair at this point. read more

I am trying to make this review as fair as I can. I would first like to say that my daughter's hair was beautiful. No complaints about the look of the style she got. But the experience as a first time customer was not the best. I don't even actually have a complaint about the salon, but I was not happy with the stylist. My child's appointment was at 2:30pm. Now I'm always early so I don't really expect everyone else to operate like that.. but she was over 30 minutes late. Thankfully someone else kindly stepped in to at least shampoo and condition my daughter's hair. So the stylist comes and I tell her that i wanted cornrows braided up into a ponytail with the curls at the end instead of beads. She looked at me like I asked her to change my child's whole identity. Other staff members attempted to help me explain what I wanted. Ok. So she started the first braid and I said that I didn't want them to be that small but she said that they should be small. I forgot to even mention the fact that when you book online it doesn't tell you that hair is not included. I can take part of the blame for that because I could have asked. But moving on.. The braiding is going and I noticed that my child was crying. I know this doesn't sound atypical, but she isn't tender headed and isn't aversive to getting her hair done. And she was trying to hide the fact that she was crying. This was about 3 hours into the braiding on a 7 year old with no break. So i asked her what was wrong and she said it was too tight. I told the stylist and she proceeded to tell me that her neck was hurting and that it was not right and that she would be fine. So I'm like she is old enough to say and know if her neck was hurting or if she was braiding too tight. She continues to braid the same way. So then when she is finally done, she braided the ends to dip them. Once again her coworkers attempted to intervene and say, "Hey, girl...that's gonna make crinkles not curls. Maybe you wanna use a rod." Does she listen? No. She proceeds to continue doing whatever she wanted to do until someone else came over and put the rod in. At this point I'm just ready to go. So I ended up paying 20 dollars more than the advertised price because this lady decided to do what she wanted and ignore just about every suggestion given by myself and her coworkers. I asked her to make the braids shorter.. nope. She didn't want to do that either. I wished I had picked someone else. I really also think that I would have a better experience with another stylist who had braided two children (beautifully might I add) in the time I was there with my one. So while I would like to give the salon another chance because I really want the other stylist to do her hair, I just can't do it. What I would like to encourage is to listen to the client. You might not like the style that the client wants, and as the professional, suggestions are certainly appropriate, but the client is paying to come in and get what they ask for, not what you want! And there is no reason to use vice grips on a 7 year olds head. If a client tells you they are hurting.. how about just believing them??!! It's not your head so you wouldn't know!! My journey to finding Chanterre was long and hard; however, it was worth the search. So allow me to take you through this path that many ladies have experienced, but have dared to write. As with many ladies who relocate, I tried many stylist, both commercial and non-commercial, but they continued to not live up to my expectations. I am a professional woman, who moved from Atlanta and I expected to find stylist of equal or higher caliber. Needless to say, I could and did not. Now, allow me to preface this by saying that I have no qualms about paying high prices for an awesome stylist; however, unlike my mother and grandmother, I do not suffer bad stylist especially when I see no progress in the health of my hair. After trusting my hair to four stylist over two years, my hair had become unhealthy. I purchased the products that they offered and nothing seemed to improve the health of my hair. As opposed to searching for stylist in Newport News and Williamsburg, I turned to the Richmond area. I scoured reviews on both Facebook and other traditional search engines. My first encounter with a Richmond stylist was much money paid for nothing. I explained to the aforesaid stylist that my hair needs rest. Therefore, she suggested a weave. Now, I do not know enough about weaves to go to a store and purchase it. Therefore, I told the stylist to purchase the weave and I would pay her. She did as instructed; however, the work she performed was not worth $500.00 and the hair surely did not cost the amount she charges. However, I paid her and told her that I would not return and I explained why. The quality of hair was atrocious and you could tell I was wearing a weave. That weekend, I searched the internet again and came across a post regarding Chanterre by Eric. The reviewer discussed how this salon promoted healthy hair by natural design, not using chemicals. Me being skeptical, I made an consult which turned into an appointment. Chanterre listened to me as I voiced my concerns about my hair and what I wanted from her as a stylist. Hence, I would base my returning and tips on achieving healthy hair. She then gave her rationale as to why my hair was traumatized. She explained to me what chemicals had done to my hair and why my hair needed a break from chemicals and straightening altogether. Although, she can perform relaxers, she tries to dissuade you by suggesting other routes for achieving the look that you want. Now, let us return to my educational and life long friendship with the stylist referred to as Mrs. Chanterre. I agreed to take her advice and she begin to practice her hair philosophy on me. I told her that because I work in a professional environment the outward natural hair appearance was not for me. She suggested a sew in weave, which I accepted. She said that she could purchase the hair from a store (I thought, oh no not this crap again) or I could purchase the hair that she has shipped from a distributor that is of a better and higher quality. I chose the later [*note to readers the hair she provides is the best, it looks and behaves natural]. She washed, dried, and braided my hair. However, before she sewed on the weave, she placed this mesh cap on my braids, which protects the hair [Note to readers, if your stylist does not place a mesh cap on your hair before weaving, question their technical abilities as a beautician]. Needless to say, I was pleased with the process, the vibe, and the look that Chanterre offers. A year later and my hair is stronger, which is often not achievable with individuals who live a strict vegetarian lifestyle. Now, as far as the salon. Chanterre provides an atmosphere for a professional clientele and to the working woman. She invites all types of clientele from diverse walks of life (Russian, European, Black, White, etc). For the most part, she tries not to overbook her clients. She does not allow the use of foul or vulgar language in her salon. She has a privacy room for weaving, just ask for it. She caters to the busy professional. For several hundreds of dollars more, she makes house calls. She is a professional. Moreover, she is a professional woman who provides exceptional service. Did I mention that she is active in her business community as well as her neighborhood. She stays abreast of the latest trends in her profession. I would not be surprised if she drives some of these trends. If you are a busy professional, or if you like quality service, you should have a consult with Chanterre. In closing, I had a long journey meeting Mrs. Chanterre, but it is one in which I would be hesitant to leave. She is one of those stylist that you happily travel or fly hundreds of miles to continue the professional service and friendship. I live in the DC area, but have been making the drive to Richmond to see Sherri since 2012 for sew-in extensions. The quality and expertise are worth the commute. Most recently, Sherri did my hair before I left for my destination wedding in Jamaica. She had another girl in the studio that she was teaching her technique to. Hearing her explain her method made me realize just how knowledgeable Sherri was, and why my extensions always look most natural when she does them. I love this salon. The ladies are professional and polite. They cater to all-men, children, and women with different texture hair. The atmosphere is tranquil, and it is clean. I cannot speak to the previous client's experience, but I will say that I've been a customer at this salon three times within the past three months and I've received nothing but great service. The stylists are friendly and my braids have always come out exactly how I want them. Naayo does my hair and she's great! The salon also has frequent specials that help in keeping cost down for the client. They're actually good specials, too! I have been going to this salon for about 5 years now and I have always been satisfied. I only trust this salon to touch my hair. Since I have been going here, I have experienced tremendous growth in my hair. The salon is extremely clean and sanitary and you can see them sweep up and sanitize after every client. They have provided me with various services including eyebrow waxing, braids, twists and sew-in weaves. All of these services have been excellent. There are multiple stylists in the salon and EACH one is highly qualified to do their job. The salon is very comfortable and all of the stylists are very personable and knowledgeable. Sherri does a great job of suggesting treatments to repair and maintain healthy hair. When I needed my hair reinstalled, I called her. I got so many compliments on my hair. People didn't even know it was a weave. I can't stay away! You can tell the care that they provide in selecting their stylist; they don't just care about the way you look and feel about your hair, but they care about you and that you are satisfied before you even leave the chair. There is comfort while you wait and they try their best not to keep you too long to get your hair done...it is best to have an appointment. Sherry, Naayo and Brittany(?) I think that's their names...also work wonders with the baby girls! Everything from eyebrows to hairfusions, braids, colors and curls...on many types of hair, even natural hair like mine.
