Charles, Crys and Caitlyn treat their customers like family and are always so welcoming! I have been getting styled by Leanza since 2017 and can't even tell you how much I have appreciated all she has done. She is great at talking through every idea of hair color I have wanted and I have always left more than satisfied. She takes the time to build a relationship with me that has really helped bring everything I have wanted to my hair be more. And trust, we've done it all, black, blonde, silver, brown, highlights, keratin, you name it, and Leanza has done it. I've also really appreciated the staff at Hair, I've talked to many of the other stylists and have always had a positive experience. The salon is always clean, and comfortable, and I've never had any issue. The prices are also super reasonable and I love the products they use! I have been going to this salon to see Charles for almost 10 years! I have always been so happy and feel absolutely beautiful when I leave. If you want gorgeous hair color, this is the place to go. They use all natural products and have been able to recommend so many good ones well suited for my hair. I originally went to get a bad color and cut from another salon fixed and I've been going back ever since! I also take my 2 kids now for their children's cuts because I got sick of bad haircuts on them from "kid salons." In the age of covid, they are very clean and safe. Everyone in masks and they limit the number of people in the salon. I have felt safe each time I have gone since March. They really look out for their clients. Hands down the best color job of my life! I am not great at communicating in the salon chair and normally leave with something a little off from what I was looking for, but Charles just totally understood what I was going for despite my questionable communication. He asked all the right questions and delivered exactly what I wanted. He also mixed a toning conditioner that has brought my hair back to life a few times since I saw him ~6 months ago. They couldn't work me in & I needed to cancel on the spot, which I really hate to do. I offered to buy some product equivalent$ to my service, to try to make them whole, and they wouldn't let me. I came to HAIR the salon in 2021 desperate to fix a botched highlight job from another local salon. HAIR was able to get me in for an appointment that week. Katelyn not only fixed my hair but has been my go to girl ever since! In fact, I know at least 5 other girls who go to Katelyn regularly, we all love her! I never have issues making appointments, even if I need to schedule or change last minute. Katelyn is also able to do my hair in the evening which is a HUGE help for me with my schedule. Crys and Charles are so welcoming and genuinely fun to be around! They always have music playing, offer you water/coffee, take your coat for you. I went in for a consultation with Leanza and it went well, she looked at the reference photos of what I was aiming for and agreed she could achieve it. All was good, she planned on using the foilage technique bc my hair is pretty dark and I wanted cooler tones. I specifically mentioned balayage. The first photo is what I showed. The next day I went in to get my hair dyed at 3:45 pm. Everything was going well until the toning part. By this time, my hair has been through a lot of washing and scrubbing. The toner was put in and then Leanza dried my hair to see how it shows. Immediately it was blue. So she sat me back down at the washer and continuesly scrubbed my scalp to get the toner out. At this point my scalp is stripped of its natural oils and was bare. She put some formula to get rid of the remaining toner in my hair and my scalp immediately started to burn. I mentioned it and she kept washing to help relieve it and told me to take advil or some pain reliever when I get home. She then blowed dried my hair. By this time it was around 8:30, I didn't realize I was at the salon for that long and we were the only ones there. However, I didn't mind it taking long bc I thought my hair would look great. At the end, my hair was definitely not what I wanted (2nt picture) but I didn't notice the extent of it until my friend who knows more about hair than me, pointed it out. She mentioned my scalp was red and looked swollen (3rd photo) and my hair was definitely not a balayage but highlights. She also mentioned that the color was off from what I wanted. My scalp hurt immensely that night and the pain didn't subside until after a few days. I decided to call the salon the next day and they offered to fix it. During the weekend my scalp continued to hurt and I decided to go to another salon to find out what was wrong. They don't know exactly what was done, but they can assume that Leanza washed my hair so much, the scalp was stripped and bare so when chemicals were applied, it burned my scalp. Essentially a chemical burn. They also agreed it was more of highlights because the dye was up at the roots. The color was not even throughout because near my roots it's very light but near my ends it was ashy, almost green toned. I was nervous about the fix up and looked at reviews of other clients that went to HAIR and one client mentioned that they just made the hair worse. I decided to cancel my appointment with them and request a refund so I can fix my hair at another salon. That day I called two times and the receptionist mentioned the owner would call me back. Well, the owner never called me back. But I expected this because another review mentioned the same experience. By this time, I washed my hair and my scalp started to peel (4th photo). I decided to dispute the charge through my card. What I don't understand was why Leanza messed up my hair like this because I saw on her Instagram page, another client's balayage and it started a few inches from the roots and looked good. At this point i'm not mad, just disappointed, i'm sure Leanza didn't do anything intentionally, just how the situation was handled could be improved upon for future clients. If a client didn't get the results they were expecting, they should have an option for either a full refund or a fix up like other salons, especially if an injury occured. All salons have clients that go through bad experiences, what sets a good salon and a bad salon apart is how they take care of the situation. A lot to improve here. I hope now one else has to experience this. read more

Charles and Chris are extremely kind and considerate owners that keep a clean salon. They are social and friendly to their clients, and served their color clients in a unique fashion when salons were closed during COVID. This was a win-win for customers and the salon. You know this salon is THAT good when all of the previous reviewers have rated it 4 or 5 stars. I'm just now getting to write a review for HAIR after making appointments there for the past four years. First of all, Charles (the master stylist) is great, and he always made me feel welcome. Every time I came in, I was so in awe of how effortless he made cutting hair look! Though I have never booked an appointment with Charles, I was never disappointed by getting my haircuts from Kelsey (a junior hair stylist who no longer works there.) Last year, I decided to go blonde from my dark brown hair and Kelsey couldn't have colored my hair any better. The salon is very chic and clean. It's located close to VCU and the fan area. HAIR also offers nail services- one of my close friends went in to get her nails done and she was pleased with the results. VCU students get a discount with a student ID. If you refer 3 people to the salon, you get a free haircut- I got a free haircut during my last visit! Sadly, I have moved out of the Richmond area but I will most definitely return when I'm in town. I got really good treatment at this place, the overall vibe is nice and didn't make me feel less than as some other upscale salons do. My hair looked amazing, I got a wash, cut, and style for a great price and it only took about an hour. Only thing I would say is my stylist did not attempt to have any kind of conversation with me at all during my appointment. This place is the jam! My first time there was a few weeks ago, I walked in and was immediately treated like a regular. I came in a virgin-hair brunette (Something I was nervous about changing as it's taken me years to grow my hair out). Cute boutique shop. Charles is AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING. My hair went through a bad accident from my previous hairstylist (dipped my hair in bleach, and tried backing it up by saying she added lowlights and highlights to my hair.. thanks for damaging and wrecking it some more,) and Charles brought it back to life. I was going for a balayage kind of look and he nailed it and beyond. Not only did the colors go AMAZING with his recommendation of the colors, he also gave me a haircut and taught me how to curl my hair as well. (I know, don't laugh, I'm still practicing how to curl my hair.) Also the shampoo and conditioner he recommended, awesome. After going to the same nail salon for the past two years in California, I needed a find a new nail technician to go to. I found Hair on Yelp! and it was perfect because it was only a couple blocks away from home. The salon is located in The Fan and is super cute! The staff is extremely welcoming, friendly and very accommodating. Roxs is awesome! First, I went to her for a pedicure. Turned out great! Second, I went to her to soak off my acrylic nails, start over and do a gel manicure. She didn't just rip off my acrylics like some salons do and send you on your way. Roxs took the time to gently scrape the acrylic off of my nail...layer by layer...no pain at all. The salon uses the Bio Seaweed gel polish, which isn't as harsh on your nails. I love my nails!! On the 11th of February 2014, I was a walk-in client to the salon Hair in Richmond , VA. I received a prompt warm greeting by the salons co- owner. I was told the wait would be minimal and was seated in spacious comfortable seating area and offered a variety of beverages. My cut included a wash and head massage. My hair was cut by the newest hairdresser on the team Kelsey Masnyk who made the experience with her upbeat personality. With a great attention to detail, the shop owner Charles stopped by during my cut to chat, check on the progress and do a little cutting himself. It was a great experience and I had a new professional hair cut and style in under an hour price $45 plus tip. When all was said and done they walked me out with my coat in hand and a thank you. I called Hair the Salon very last minute to see if they could get me in for a day-of hair cut and they were extremely accommodating. I cannot say enough about the welcome I received and the kindness from the staff. The vibe is very modern and stylish and at the same time, the staff makes you feel like family. Ashly cut my hair and gave me the best hair cut I've ever had. Not only that, but she gave me incredible - and honest - hair advice that I have never received before. I also spoke with her about wanting to change my hair but feeling uncomfortable with committing to a permanent hair dye. She described different options that I could get done that would allow me to change up my hair with out the commitment. I already have another appointment scheduled in a few weeks and I could not be more excited. The last thing I'll say is that this place is extremely affordable. Ashly is a junior stylist so based on her skill and expertise, I can only imagine Charles, the senior stylist who I did not meet, is a wizard. My experience here was a complete shit show and I regret the day I ever walked into this incompetent salon. For starters the clumsy lady that did my hair, Katelyn spilled coffee on me. I asked for an ash blonde balayage. The first time around she did my hair too dark and it was just a soft brown with no dimension. She re-did it right then and I ended up with orange hair, ORANGE! What's worse is that it was patchy and streaky and it looked like I had gotten highlights 6 months ago and they grew out. I spent 4 hours at the salon that day and walked out crying. Katelyn whom recently got promoted to senior stylist is incredibly incompetent and her hair training was through some program at her high school. I went back and they put me with a junior stylist to color correct the mess that Katelyn had made. My hair now looks how it was before I ever walked into the salon, just a lot more damaged, and they are ignoring my emails asking for a refund. Oh and not to mention that even with a robe on, clumsy Katelyn managed to get hair dye on my favorite shirt and stain it. I went in to the store today to ask for a refund in person but Charles the store owner refused to see me and the front desk told me he would call me later in the day. No call. Customer service is very important and I wish that more businesses would understand that. It is inconvenient to re schedule a clients appointment not only once , but twice. The second time that they called to cancel on me i felt like they didn't even seem to care that this was the second time. I had to call them back to make sure that my appointment could be changed again and they did not answer . I ended up leaving a voicemail but they didn't bother on calling me. This was on Friday and it is now Tuesday & still no call. They have lost my business & any other potential people I could have referred. I ended up calling over 6 salons on a Saturday hoping to get squeezed in as I needed my hair cut for an event Sunday .Luckily I found another great salon in Richmond that had a cancellation that day. read more

You know you received a good haircut when you let it air dry and it still looks good. My hair grows slowly. That said, I cringe if I get a bad cut because I live with it for awhile. I just moved here 10 months ago and after going to several different stylists in the area who weren't impressing me with their cutting skills, I saw reviews on Charles and took the leap of faith and went to him to help me out. Thank goodness I did. He didn't cut much off because I'm trying to grow it out, but WOW what a difference! I'm looking forward to future cut/styles with him. On a side note, Charles did give me options of hair extensions if I wanted the length to my hair now without waiting for the slow growth to get me to my goal. It is an an expensive option, but the great thing about it, he didn't push it! He showed me the product, described the process, the care involved, and left it at that. That in itself sells better than the hard sell from other places if you ask me. No, I haven't taken him up on it, but he does have me thinking about it. Seriously! That says something because I'm frugal. Now, since I just admitted to being frugal, I have to say that the price tag for a hair cut is daunting ($70 not including tip). I am biting my lower lip thinking about when it comes time to color/highlight, BUT I have to remind myself that this haircut has been one of the best I have received in awhile. The adage you get what you pay for comes to mind. So, if you have the money, indulge yourself because Charles is a great stylist. On a side note, I was able to find street parking easily, but I believe they have parking in the back. Overpriced for subpar service. I got my hair cut and colored by Katelyn here once in July 2018 and it was so bad I still think about it. I came in for an ombré, dark roots and light tips. I showed her photos of what I wanted and expected it to be amazing since I was paying upwards of $70 for it. She turned me around and bleached my hair all the way up to my roots, turning my hair completely blonde. I was devastated, especially since she hadn't turned my chair around so I could see what she was doing until it was already too late. An aside from that, I've never had someone tug on my scalp so violently while coloring hair before in my life. I had a headache afterward and was trying not to cry--I'm shocked that my hair wasn't falling out in clumps afterward, it was like WWII Japanese torture. Such an awful experience, definitely check out a place like Circle Square Salon or others where people listen to what you want and treat your hair with love. You can get an amazing cut and color for way less, don't waste your time and money. Definitely would not recommend and will not be returning. read more

Hair is lovely, sleek & stylish. It's in a charming and convenient location (that even has parking out back) and they sell unique and fabulous products. But none of those reasons are why I come... I got a seaweed French gel mani from Rox and it was fantastic! Lasted over two weeks, and very reasonably priced. I like that it comes off without all the scraping that damages your nails. I already left a review on Facebook but I LOVE this place so I must do on here. I went to this salon a few months ago when another salon totally messed my hair up. I corresponded with Charles through email with pictures of my hair. He gave me honest suggestions on what could be redone to restore the look and health of my hair. He colored it nicely and gave me a wonderful cut you wouldn't even have guessed the other salon bleached and dried it out. Now I go back often for trims and such and I even get my daughter's hair cut here also. We will be loyal customers for life. The staff is also very nice and it's a very clean and inviting environment. I highly recommend this salon to EVERYONE. read more

When I tried to get a refund for the poor service they provided - it was a very unpleasant situation. The color applied to my roots did not take and ended up making my hair fall out. The brand name of the color is not one that is well known - in fact it is virtually unheard of. They were unwilling to refund my money so I had to file a dispute with my credit card company. I would not recommend this salon or the stylist, Charles Flood. This is NOT a moderately priced salon. Despite the high prices that they charge, the quality of the products used and the skills of the stylist are not justified. read more

Two stars for niceness alone. Sorry to be what seems to be the only dissenting opinion, but I had a bad experience here not once but twice. The first time, when I showed up for my appt, the person (K) I was supposed to see was sick and I had to see someone else (forgot her name, a newbie, but they should have called and told me this beforehand and I probably would have cancelled). Everyone was really nice but the haircut I received was terrible. I called and requested a recut with the person I had originally booked with. Who was supposed to be an experienced stylist (K)...who (who knows how) seemed to have good reviews here on yelp. Wrong. Again, she was very sweet, but VERY MUCH an amateur. My hair was recut but it's a mess. Still uneven (in additional places than the first time) and only a couple of weeks later its growing out looking awful. To me the sign of a good haircut is how it lies and how it grows out. Well...my haircut sucks on both counts and looks awful. Politeness was great, I will give them that, but that's a small portion of what I want when I go to a salon. I want someone who knows how to cut hair and didn't just get out of cosmetology school. I could have gone to Hair Cuttery for this mess. Now I have to wait for it to grow out more to get it re cut since the two back to back haircuts made my hair a lot shorter than I wanted. I hate having to choose a new salon when moving, and although this salon had great ratings, I'd give it less than one star for actual skill in hair. Politeness and friendliness 2 (because they do not check emails regularly and I had to contact them multiple times in multiple ways to get a response about needing a recut). The girls were definitely sweet, like I said, but I got a totally crappy amateur haircut two times, so I'm done here. I want skilled people-not newbies. I'm really shaking my head about the reviews.
