The first time I drove past it was a few years ago and it was grey and dreary due to the rain. But I remembered it. So I decided to get a place to stay in the area when planning my trip to the Sunshine Coast after the pandemic. I got to appreciate the place more when staying here as I had the opportunity to walk along the coast in the morning (during sunrise), afternoon, evening (sunset) and night. There are always people fishing and crabbing on the pier. The pier is the iconic landmark of Davis Bay. The highlight was seeing several seals swim past just after sunrise when I was out at the pier. I saw probably 10 or more seals swimming in groups of 2-3 in the half hour period. One even breached the water. I was told it is also common to see grey whales swim here too. Besides the gorgeous sunset where you can literally see the sun go down, it is a lovely walk along the sidewalk, especially in the morning and evening. The beach is a bit too rocky to walk comfortably. Parking is available by the road. Across the pier, there are a few restaurants. Make reservations there as they are always busy, especially for dinner.

It is a beautiful beach and they have a viewing deck that extend out to the water for anyone who wants to go fishing. certain areas have stairs that you can walk down from the parking area to the beach. Hidden Grove is a network of walking trails in Sechelt, and combined with the trails in the Sechelt…read moreHeritage Forest, there are over 16km of trails running through 170 acres of forest. The trails are numbered and color coded, with signs and color markers at each trail junction, making it very easy to determine your location and find the next trail. There are numerous combinations of routes you can take, with each trail segment ranging from a one ten minute walk. (Oddly, the map posted online and at the entrance to Hidden Grove does not indicate the length of time it takes to walk each trail segment, but the paper maps available at the entrance do.) We went for a leisurely 45 minute walk, and while we only walked a fraction of the trails, all the trails were extremely easy and flat. There was only one brief segment marked as "steep", and even that wasn't too bad -- the elevation gain was minimal and only lasted a minute or so. The Hidden Grove trails are good for families and people with mobility issues. In fact, there are a couple of trails that are designated "accessibility trails", suitable for people in wheelchairs, and there are also benches throughout the trails. The trails are also dog-friendly. While not a hike, Hidden Grove was a lovely walk through a lush, green forest, and I hope I have the opportunity to go again and walk all the different trails. The trails are maintained by the Sechelt Groves Society, and extremely impressed with how well-maintained and marked the trails were, I made a donation. [Yelp collections: Hiking]

Tetrahedron Provincial Park is a beautiful park found on the Sunshine Coast near Sechelt. The road…read moreup to the park is an old logging road and one portion of the road is partially deactivated so if you have a long car you may not make it up. Short wheelbase cars are fine though on this road. The entire park is located within the watershed for Sechelt and therefore there are extra rules in this park such as you must stay in a cabin if you plan to stay overnight and you must use the outhouses to do your business! No bikes or mechanized vehicles are aloud inside this park and no domestic animals either. You are also not aloud to swim in any of the lakes or ponds. Check the website for a full list of regulations. This park is very popular in the summer with hikers and in the winter with backcountry skiers and snowshoers. In the summer it can be very muddy along some sections of the trail as there are a lot of wetlands inside this park. The landscapes are beautiful and lakes very pretty. This is a wonderful place to come and enjoy the wilderness. Remember to watch out for Black Bears and Cougars wile you are out and about in the park as they are both residents. I recommend spending some time poking around and exploring this wonderful pocket of parkland you will not be disappointed. Well unless you forget to prepare for mud in the summer that is (good boots and gaiter are a must)!

As Yelp is not as big as Trip Advisor up in Canada (but is king here in the U.S.), I am hoping this review will spread the word in the States about this truly unique experience. This past Labor Day weekend (8/30/2019), my girlfriend and I had a truly unforgettable experience on a nighttime Bioluminescence kayaking tour lead by Greg Rushton, owner of Metta Eco-Experiences. Greg is a fantastic tour guide. He is very personable, talkative and enjoys sharing his passion/knowledge for the human need for nature both physically and emotionally. He put us at ease immediately with his warm personality and made us both feel comfortable navigating in a kayak in the dark (or what soon became dark after our push-off from shore). Greg has decades of experience as a kayak and nature guide, having explored nearly every inch of of the surrounding inlets, coves and straights via boat. In addition to the Bioluminescence tour, he also does nature walks in the area, fire building tutorials and multi-day kayaking adventures (see his website). The Bioluminescence tour, however, is NOT TO BE MISSED. Words simply cannot do it justice. When we pulled up to the Back Eddy (a restaurant and launch spot for boats where Metta is based) after a long day of flights, ferries and driving, we were not even close to prepared for what Greg had in store for us. The glowing effect that is bioluminsence is caused by a chemical reaction inside certain types of organisms that have both luciferin and luciferase or photoprotein. This is typically found in tiny micro-organisms like plankton or bacteria, but can also be found in fish and jellyfish. The bioluminescent effect only occurs in certain oceanic waters that are protein rich, which is why it is more rare to find. The water in the bay on which Egmont is situated, checks all the boxes. The result of this chemical process will amaze you. Once we were out on the water and began observing how the ocean began to glow and glitter at our touch, we were filled with child-like wonder and giddiness. When fish swam under and around our boat, you could actually see a glowing streak in the water where they had been due to the billions of bioluminescent plankton floating in the protein-rich water. You will hardly believe your eyes!  Nature is truly incredible! What's more is Greg took us to a part of the bay where seals often feed and we were able to see it swimming under our boat in the dark. So incredibly cool! I cannot recommend this experience highly enough. It truly took us by surprise and was unlike anything we've experienced. Provide a company could provide the essentials, the experience is already going to be great. However, Pedals and Paddles don't simple rest on the fact that they're situated at a great spot. They provided excellent service by quickly replying to my phone call, providing flexibility, offering things at no extra cost such as crocks (so as not to get your own footwear wet), among other things. Lots of equipment available and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We had limited time in our day to return to the ferry and they even charged a half hour rate rather than a full hour which I don't think many others would do.

The Gwaii Hanaas National Park in Haida Gwaii is a paradise for sea kayaking. It's very remote and…read morequiet, has good beaches, fresh water and lots of wildlife. I've taken four trips with Gord in Haida Gwaii; two trips to Cape Freeman and two trips on the Outer Coast. On one Cape Freeman trip a pod of Orcas closely followed us for 30 minutes and on one Outer Coast trip a juvenile humpback surfaced with an outstretched mouth directly in front of us - about 20 yards distant. Another highlight of these trips is the visit to Sgang Gwaay, a Haida village that still has totem poles that are still standing after the village was abandoned in the 1860's. Gord is an outstanding guide who holds to the highest standard of safety and providing opportunities for guests to have genuinely meaningful experiences in a remarkable place. Gord's philosophy of attending to the present, particularly the quietude (there can be hours and hours without any noise pollution) helps to settle a busy mind. Gord is renowned for his cooking and his skillful use of his spice pantry. When he taught a kayak guiding course I attended last year, Gord emphasized that it is much easier to make rational decisions if one is relatively comfortable and that good food is a great source of comfort. The kayak fleet and gear are first-rate. Unlike, most kayak guided trips which require 1 or 2 large double kayaks, all of Gord's guests can use single kayaks - a double kayak is also available. There is a world of difference paddling a single and double kayak. Gord has different types of trips. For those with little or no experience sea kayaking, the Waters of Sgang Gwaay trip stays in calmer waters and has shorter trips between campsites. Experienced paddlers can take the Cape Freeman trip which can get out to the West Coast of Moresby Island. A trip with Gord is not for those who need an agenda. Gord always complies with the conditions of winds and waves - which may mean that you stay and continue to enjoy the same campsite. This is a great lesson for life! Nor are Gord's trips good for those who want to kayak independently of the group. But if you want to safely kayak and camp in a remote, beautiful and dynamic setting, Gord can't be beat.
