Jon is the worst. He was on a power trip, and kicked out my friend for politely trying to explain a situation to him. He accused us of stealing ice(?) although we had racked up a tab of over $50 and purchased all drinks within our possession. We were paying customers and he accused us of stealing and kicked out my friend for no reason when she tried to politely explain. He was screaming at her after we already apologized and were willing to give our ice back. The other bartenders are all very nice but Jon is on a power trip and talks to all customers with rudeness and sass, being very disrespectful unlike anyone else. I am disappointed as a graduating senior who went to Dog weekly to have had this horrible experience with Jon when my friend was just trying to nicely explain the situation and defend us as paying customers who had paid for every drink in our possession. They denied providing me service when trying to purchase a drink because one of them had a disagreement with one of my friends which did not involve me. But by "association" I was denied being served. Eventually another bartender served us but when we brought up a complaint, the bartender dismissed us and said that he "probably had his reasons". If I weren't in college...or should I say a very recent graduate..I might rate this place lower. It is definitely one of my go-to bars for cheap drinks with a decent atmosphere. I prefer to go here in the late afternoon rather than the evenings...not very much fun when it's super crowded; unless you're already sauced and then you probably won't care. They have happy hour every day until 7; they also serve food (not sure about the cleanliness of the kitchen) and the food is pretty decent for bar food. The best thing about happy hour is half priced food! Their drink specials are different every day/night; some days they have good specials on imports or just a specific type of drinks (for example seadog blue paw and woodchuck were $2 for ladies on saturday). As mentioned in other reviews Yunegling pitchers are always $5, good place to take turns buying pitchers with friends. Some night I have trouble meeting my $5 tab minimum, lol! Draft/beer selection is only bested by Stubbies and Steins, which is a bar dedicated exclusively to beer...so.. They also have a couple "drinking around the world" type challenges that you must complete in 30 days (free shirt involved). They have beer, whiskey, and tequila categories. Right next to an equally awesome and laid back place that had a cracked toilet bowl behind a puddle of vomit the first time I showed up. Salty Dog, back in the 70s apparently was the only place to get hot food delivered when you were up late. Now days I don't think you can even buy food here. But you can definitely get beer. It does get crowded, but they've got a bar in the back and a bar in the front, and a door at the back and a door at the front. A bit of a collection of old Gator gear and Florida decor on the walls and ceiling. One of the things I love about Salty Dog, other than their clubs for drinking their assortment of beers or whiskeys, or the fact that they have a decent selection of beer and you don't have to go downtown. Some of my best college memories made here -- love this place when it's empty on a Monday afternoon as well as crowded on a weekend night. You can actually have a conversation inside and they play mostly classics/rock hits. Sometimes it gets too packed but they have food late night, cheap beer per usual college town standards and an oldies homey vibe with classic wood/license plate decor and various neon signs. Only lost one star because they've been letting people troll the juke box lately and play absolute garbbbb such as sandstorm by darude if you are familiar with the tune. The food is actually STELLAR for the type of place it is, and 59¢ wings at least two nights a week I'm pretty sure. The worst bar I have ever frequented. I have never been kicked out of a bar until today. The staff were beyond unprofessional and rude. Several families with graduating students and parents were enjoying a nice evening together. After a round of drinks had been ordered, one of the staff returned and interrupted the discussion to demand a larger tip than 10%. When several of the parents intervened to let the waitstaff know that demanding a larger tip wasn't okay, she lost her cool and demanded the bouncers throw out the entire group of 15. A friend of mine once described Salty Dog as a bar that would be a hipster dive if it wasn't located at midtown. I think that's the best way to approach it. They have a really boss beer selection - everything from nice imports like Orval Trappist Ale and Chimay to American microbrews like Abita. Moreover, they always have a nice deal going on and one of the best happy hours in town. From 4-7 you can get a double wells for $2.25 every day of the week. Not really a fan of the nights it's busy - then you're packed like sardines with a bunch of 21-year-olds that are still trying to make their college experience into a version of Animal House. But on less crowded nights, it's a chill place with cheap booze, good service, and a dive-y atmosphere. If you want a clean, big bar with overpriced drinks, best look elsewhere. read more

Dog is one of my favorite bars in Gainesville. Nothing beats leaving the library at 3pm, walking a block down the road and having a drink. They have a wide selection of beers on tap (around 30 at all times) and an even bigger selection of bottles from around the world. Happy hour is from open-7 everyday and has pretty good deals, such as half off food and cheap 22oz domestic drafts. For those whiskey drinkers, their selection is pretty hefty with 28+ brands of whiskey. A midtown staple. The Salty Dog Saloon is a mainstay of Gainesville's 'midtown' district, and with good reason. The tap wall is expansive and rotates regularly. Like Durty Nelly's and a few other fine establishments, Salty Dog has been grandfathered past the indoor smoking ban in Gainesville. This element, repulsive to many, lends the Dog a rather nostalgic, blue atmosphere, in which one can almost hear the chaos of the 1996 football national championship. The ambience is strange: from opening (3:00 pm) until about sunset, Salty plays host to thirsty grad students and faculty. It's quiet. It's not crowded. One can listen to George Thorogood on the jukebox to one's heart's content. Mike (perhaps the best bartender in Gainesville, based on expertise, memory, and celerity) pours 22 oz. Yeunglings for $1.75. It's, in a word, zen. Then, the sun goes down. And a lot of dudes come in. Like, a lot of dudes. A lot of board shorts, tank-tops, flip-flops, neon hats, croakies, boat shoes, expensive watches, dip cans, country music, shitty rap, Natty Lite pitchers, flip cup, quarters, and fishing shirts. And loud, ignorant mouths. If you watched it all on mute, it could almost pass as a gay bar. Or a deleted scene from the American Pie franchise. Having never stayed at the Salty Dog past, say, 8:00 pm, I can only assume that such a steady stream of Axe body spray wafts through the entrance all night until close. Every night of the week. They have two bars inside and a pool table and jukebox with plenty of genres to choose from. They also have merchandise for sale in the shop. I have been coming to this establishment for a while now. The bartenders have always been very nice and accommodating. Their menu of food is that of what you would normally find in a sports bar setting. Mostly fried food. Their chicken wings were very tasty along with their wide range of sauces. They also have a "Camillas Platter" which consists of chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, and curly fries. Which is just about everything one could ask from a fry kitchen. This place has the rudest staff of any establishment I have ever encountered. They insult their customers and kick people out when they have done nothing wrong. As someone who used to visit frequently, the amount of disrespect I have encountered at this place just from employees is unreasonable. They belittle their customers, call them out in front of the entire bar, charge more without notice, and target people purposefully. Not to mention the service is well below par yet the bartenders still expect a 50% tip with every drink you buy. The bartenders act as if you inconvenience them when asking for a drink and will call you out (or even kick you out) for not tipping enough. I have been to every bar in Gainesville and have never met more entitled people who are angry all the time for no reason. I have gone out of my way to be nice to these people, tip extra, etc. but I have never been as disrespected as I have at this bar. News flash: this is a college bar where people go to have a good time and keep the business running, not to fear getting reprimanded by staff. I am not the type to write bad reviews about any business, but this place deserves it. I used to enjoy going to Salty's, but the way I have been treated as well as have seen others be treated is honestly shameful.
