Now, let's get one thing straight. I grew up in church. I graduate from a Christian university. I know churches. And I know about the Salvation Army. But where I grew up, the only Salvation Armies we had were the ones that take shoes and clothes donations for the poor--there were not, as far as I know, any Salvation Army churches in my neck of the woods. So I never realized they were churches until I met someone from the UK who said indeed they are.
Recently my husband gave a message at this particular Salvation Army church. It was my first experience in a church of this denomination. What was it like? Well. To be completely honest, I would describe the experience as strange and slightly disconcerting.
Let me just put it this way, in case you are thinking of visiting this church: they are fairly informal, kind of lovey dovey, and very short sermons, very swingy guitar music, and generally cheesy, but kind people. I'm sorry if I offend, but I only speak the truth. read more
