Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden - the train you ride to go in and out of the mine

What a fun tour! I was looking for something kind of silly to do on our vacation, and after a day…read moreup at the Eagle's Nest, this seemed like a fun way to unwind. You are given a miner's jumpsuit and a locker to put your valuables in....no personal recording devices on this tour! Next, you get picked up by a miner's train and the tour begins...you are taken directly into a mountain through some very narrow passages. At the end of the railway, you get off and begin walking through various rooms showing you the history of the mine, including various pieces of equipment used over the years. You learn a little bit about the topography of the mountain range and how extensive the mine and others like it are. At two separate points, you slide down a wooden slide, and go deeper into the earth. Smile, because there is one of those attraction cameras that catch your reaction to the descent. A little more walking and you are corralled onto a floating platform that floats (it's pulled by a pulley system) across an underground lake. The water is crystal clear and there is a very nice light show as you cross. At the end of the tour, you hop back on the train and ascend to where you originally got on. Someone is there to take yet another picture of you! Once you are off the train, you turn in your jumpsuit, retrieve your belongings, and exit through the gift shop. The gift shop consists of bottles of salt from the mine, as well as the usual touristy stuff: clothing, bags, postcards, etc. Parking for tourists is across the street in a paid lot with a tunnel to get you safely across the road. We were lucky, in that our tour had about 15-20 people in it, so we could see and hear everything quite easily. The day was sunny and clear, so maybe people just didn't want to be inside on such a nice day, but that is exactly when I would advise to see something like this, as it apparently gets very crowded on rainy days. 19/2021

And over an easy 90 mins guided us through the beautiful and historically rich streets of Salzburg. Leo was fun, engaging and deeply knowledgeable about the history, culture and made outdoor learning on a chilly drizzly morning the highlight of the day! At the end of the tour, he gave out a little map and postcard so that we can find our way around and write home with the lovely adventures. Of course, i got to say, the concept of a free walking tour is that it is tip based. This encourages most of us have a freely ranging knowledge share but also, for those of us able to, definitely give what you would've paid for a standard guided tour... or more because the work is excellent. After the tour, Leo stayed behind for quite some time to give curated advice for what to do or see next. Since it is all outdoors, i felt covid safe throughout the trip. You can wear your mask as you feel comfortable to do so. And i would say, the bunker is the only semi-covered indoor spot we ever paused in.

What trip to Salzburg would be complete without a "Sound of Music" tour?…read more On our recent trip to Germany and Austria with five of our adult children and six grandchildren, we took the tour offered by Panorama Tours. Everyone came away absolutely enchanted! I know, I know: it sounds a little cheesy. And a four-hour bus tour sounds like a lot. But it was actually a lot less hokey, a lot more informative, and considerably lower-key than we expected. Except for the singing. You can't have a Sound of Music tour without singing some of the movie's most famous tunes. The tour departs from the Panorama kiosk next to the Andräkirche across from the Mirabell Gardens, where several of the movie's scenes were filmed. But that will come later. First, the introductions. Our tour guide was a gentleman named José who came to Salzburg from Costa Rica. He was delightful and engaging from the start, offering us several ways to remember his name. "What is the name for pants in German?" he asked. "Hosen" is the answer, so that's one way. Another, "If I say something you don't quite believe, is to shout 'No way, José!'" They both worked. With his light-hearted approach, José set about telling us about the movie and the artistic license filmmakers took with the real story of the von Trapp family. One of our first stops included Hellbrunn Castle, which is home to the gazebo in the famous love scene, "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." Here, two of our grandkids did their own take on that sequence. The gazebo was originally located at the Schloss Leopoldskron but was moved to its current location because the large number of tourists who wanted to see it proved overwhelming to the palace. The back side of the palace, which faces the lake, represented the rear of the von Trapp villa in the movie. Schloss Frohnburg on the Hellbrunner Allee was also used for the exterior shots of the von Trapp villa. The grand church where the Capt. von Trapp and Maria marry in the movie, the Basilika St Michael in the town of Mondsee in Salzburg's Lake District, is one of many stops on the tour. Guests can visit the church, peruse some souvenir shops and grab a bite of lunch before heading back into Salzburg. In real life, the couple married in the church of the Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, which Maria had entered as a postulant intending to become a nun. However, she was later sent to care for von Trapp's children, became their governess and eventually married Capt. von Trapp. On the road to and from the town of Mondsee, our tour bus passed the worldwide headquarters of the energy drink Red Bull. Many of those on the tour were disappointed that it was not one of our stops. In addition to using more picturesque buildings rather than the real locations, there were other liberties taken for dramatic effect. For example, the von Trapp family's escape from Austria did not involve climbing across the Alps into Switzerland. The mountain they climb in the movie is not part of the Alps and borders Germany, not Switzerland. In addition, the famous musical family was carrying heavy suitcases along with their musical instruments. Pretending to go on a vacation, they left quietly by train for Italy before coming to the U.S. by way of London. And while they were certainly on the Nazis' radar, Nazi troops were not waiting outside their residence as they stole away into the night. Heading back into Salzburg, José led us in some of the more popular songs as we made our way to the Mirabell Gardens, our last stop. Several scenes were filmed there, including the performance of "Doe: a Deer," which two of our daughters felt obliged to recreate in their own inimitable style under statues used in the movie. Yes, the background is different than in the movie but the movie was filmed more than 60 years ago and things do change... Because it was winter, we chose the 9:15 a.m. tour. At four hours in duration, it would be dark before the 14:00 (2 p.m.) tour ended. In the summertime, it won't make much difference. Just be sure not to miss it!

AMAZING! WOW!!! Don't miss this. If you are a fan of The Sound of Music it's a must do. There's…read moreso much more to this tour than visiting the many sites where the movie was filmed. The stories, the history, the scenery, the awesome guide and last but not least, the onboard entertainment provided by all the people onboard the bus. Practice your lyrics because you will sing every song - and you will enjoy doing it. Being here brings back so many memories of 11 yr old me seeing The Sound of Music a couple of weeks after it came out. Remembering the wedding and the shot from the top down as the camera follows Maria's train down the aisle- I did that same walk 60 yrs later -today in person -in the Basilica Minor St. Michael. (Minus the dress and The Captain). All the locations weave together a timeless movie that was created in two countries. I

There were a few steep hills, but very doable for people in shape. Bus tickets and bike rentals are provided in cost of tour, but bring cash for a tip! Overall, it was an incredible experience, and exactly what I wanted out of the trip. Would highly recommend! (The pictures don't even do it justice)
