In an attempt to find something that clicks it's been through a couple of reincarnations in the last couple of years, and in it's latest guise it has emerged as a Polish restaurant. Yellow Bench on Leith Walk, another Polish restaurant, is a favourite of mine so I was keen to see how this compares. When we popped along business was still very quiet, but it was late on a Sunday evening and the current chef has only recently taken on the restaurant so I'll reserve judgement on that for now. Service was friendly, efficient... and detailed. When waiting for our mains, the waitress gave us regular updates - "your main will be 4 minutes".. "your main will be 2 minutes" etc. At one point I thought this might extend to a second by second countdown in the last minute, which gave us a bit of a giggle. The food was tasty, and in mighty portions. I had the sour rye soup to start which was a soup made with a rye flour base, boiled egg, and smoked sausage served in a hollowed loaf of bread. Even eating only the lid of the bread, this was a large enough dish to serve as a main rather than starter. I only sampled the the herring in sour cream starter but enjoyed what I tasted. For main we both went with the beef stew with Polish potato dumplings. When it comes to stew a lot of places can be overtly generous with the gravy and lacking when it comes to the beef. Happy to report that this wasn't the case here as we were served a good ratio of gravy to chunk of tender beef. The dumplings were nice enough, but never something I get too excited about. So how did it compare to Yellow Bench? For a new arrival it stood it's ground well. If you're looking for hearty portions of Polish home cooking, The Percy will serve you well but the decor and lighting still has one foot remaining in 'old-man pub' territory. If you're on a date I'd head to Yellow Bench as the the food presentation, candle lit tables and general ambience better lends itself to that dining experience. Judging by the number of Polish stores that have popped up in and around Easter Road, there's a large enough audience for both to happily co-exist.

Originally this was a gathering place for Glasgow's Polish community dating back over 50 years, Restauracja U Jarka is somewhere between a social club and a Taverna certainly unique, with vintage features from the carved wooden chairs to the embroidered tablecloths make this a charming, quirky restaurant that serves up traditional honest cuisine. Chunky filled dumplings and breaded pork are the highlights, l settled with the beef and potato soup followed by the meat stew and potato pancakes then to top it off the tiramisu, one thing for sure you won't leave hungry. Beers at great prices with the option of staying longer in the adjoining bar where Poles young and old mix with locals in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our server was Klaudia who did a great job.

TBH at first I was a little bit apprehensive, it did not look like somewhere I would pick to eat. It was old fashioned and quite strange, but as I sat longer I realised it was quite warm and homely. Like sitting in someone's kitchen for dinner. The food was amazing. To start I had delicious sour rye soup with smoked sausage and a boiled egg floating in it. Very unusual but lovely. Then we shared cheese dumplings. Not my favourite dumpling ever, but still very good. They were like fried batter with cream cheese inside them. For mains I had a brilliant pork roll with spinach in it and chips on the side. The portion was massive and the food was great, proper home cooked style and tasted awesome. This is like no where else in Glasgow. It feels as if your are stepping back in time or into another country. There are no frills here, think more bowling club or social club in terms of decor, but this all adds to the experience and if you fancy something different and a bit rustic, you will love this place. Add in that it's cheap. 16 pounds a head for loads of food and a huge beer. Plus you can go next door to the bar area and get two jaegers and a gin and tonic for 5.70! What's not to like? In sum. The pork collops in thyme and lemon sauce with cucumber in sour cream salad and potato dumplings and pork crackling (really pancetta) is to die for! It costs less than £6!! They have gorgeous soup, ciabbatta. side dishes, salads, desserts. You will not go wrong if you eat here. Expect t have a 20min approx wait, as everything is cooked to order. Polish Shop around the corner!…read more I can't deny that I am a fan of rye bread and it is normally very hard to find this particular rye bread. But I found it, just around the corner, in a Polish Deli. The Deli does not only sell bread, but also other staff that seems to be imported from Poland. Food and names I have never heard off. Nevertheless, I am always up for trying new things and so far the shop has not disappointed me (well, besides the Soletti with it's strange taste). The owners are really friendly. At peak times the shop is so crowed that it takes a while to pay for your stuff, but in the end it's worth the waiting.
