I had a restraining order against my ex-husband, and as we began on our divorce journey, our…read morelawyers recommended Mary Ann Stokes, saying she was the best way to avoid going to court and she was the best mediator. She did absolutely nothing to help. Walking into her conference room, she claimed she was tough and then never followed up on any requests of hers that my ex-husband did not accommodate. She just let everything he didn't do slide by, even though I would ask her to please follow up with him to hold him accountable. For example, everything she asked me to bring to our meetings I would carefully prepare and bring, such as my assets when it was time for us to do our QDRO. He brought nothing that session. I had to gently nudge her even to call his financial institution to try to evaluate the statements and when a she was met with a voicemail greeting, she hung up the phone and told my ex to simply "make sure he got this done". He never did. I ended up wasting an $8000 retainer on her crappy firm and having to go to family court, anyhow, which I have been trying to avoid for the sake of our two kids. The most painful part for me was because I had honestly opened up my books - which my ex-husband was never made to do - I ended up having to sign half of my retirement savings over to that scumbag.

I struggle giving more than a 2 on this review for many reasons. While Mary Ann has a wealth of…read moreexperience, it has been my personal opinion that she struggles with being consistent. She has been the mediator assigned pre & post divorce between my ex and I. She developed the Marital Settlement Agreement that is used to help eliminate repeat pain points between the parties and our children. At times when encountered with an issue Mary Ann would be crystal clear in helping identify what one party can and cannot do and help resolve the issue at hand. However, when the same issue would be experienced only months later it's as if she would forget her prior advice and say something completely opposite. Phrases like forget about that, that was then this is now are often used when you would present her with specific details of her past advice. When presented or questioned with the reasoning for inconsistent advice there were too many responses that only led me to believe that she would let her feelings get hurt and go on the attack and often take one parties side over the other depending on the given situation. As you can imagine, when there are kids involved this is very sensitive and at times I found she made our family situation worse. She will reference the importance of the parenting plan and the effort involved to initiate, create and get the judge and parties to sign off on the grand plan. However, as you move forward with life she will often disregard the agreed upon plan and leave your life spiraling out of control often resulting in children being impacted. Developing a plan she is clear on the structure and approach to help get that done. It's clear she is successful in this area and I would recommend her in the initial phase of your divorce proceedings. However, post divorce I don't recommend her as a mediator or parenting coordinator as I believe she struggles with the spur of the moment issues that don't fit neatly into her tightly defined parenting plan. In addition, do your homework on and ask questions on her own personal background. I believe there are some built in biases that exist based on various situations that have occurred. A plan is only a plan and life often presents situations that require someone to step in and mediate. Mary Ann at times tries to play not only mediator but often she tries to play psychologist without understanding fully the family dynamics or details of the various situations that arise. This can be very dangerous. Proceed with caution. P.S. - Keep in mind it's my understanding she has been in practice for almost 40 years. Just like when it's time for an aging athlete to hang up their cleats because their body will no longer let them perform up to the level required, this may just be a case of once outstanding mediator turning the corner on 80 years old and just not able to perform like they once did and it's time to hang up her cleats.
