"Sculptures by the sea"- Tamarama
Tom P.

I eat here a lot. I've ordered most things on the menu. The quality is great and the cost is very reasonable. They did a renovation a while ago which gives the place a great ambience, especially upstairs Make sure you order the Pad See Ew, the noodles are nice and thick and the veggies are cooked beautifully.

I am on an eternal quest to pleasure my tastebuds. I've been known to visit countries just because I like the food, and it was in Thailand that I was introduced to the aromatic delights that a really good Tom Yum will unleash... It was a rushed lunchtime when I decided to forsake the sandwich I'd been planning and give Sam's Thai a red-hot go. Sam's is always busy, but with Thai restaurants I never assume that means they're good. Having spent almost a year in Thailand I'm pretty fussy about the cuisine now, and trust me- busy and/or expensive does not necessarily translate to an amazing Thai meal. The service wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either - I stood at the counter right in front of the woman serving for almost 5 minutes before she acknowledged me- there was something else going on and that's fine but it takes less than a second to make eye contact and let a customer know you're aware they're there. (This is one of my pet service hates). Once she served me she was fine though. My tom yum took about 10 minutes and came in 2 containers - one for the broth and veg and one for the noodles, coriander and bean sprouts- which was great so when I got back to work I could add the noodles fresh. It was good but by no means the best I've had- it could have done with a bit more flavour, but at $7.50 I'd certainly have it again.

An awkward 20 second silence ensued, then - ding! - a little lightbulb went on as I realised he was the front counter guy from Pizzeria Rio. Let's quickly gloss over the fact that I ordered pizza so often from my local woodfire joint that they recognise me out and about, and focus on the impressive aspect of this evening encounter: the service factor. Clearly, these guys pay attention to who prefers their 'Venice' topping chicken-free - leaving a delicious and vegetarian combo of artichoke, mushroom, pesto and olives - with an oh-so healthy side of garden salad. (Yes, that's also me). I love that they use a homemade tomato sauce as well as low-fat mozzarella in toppings to help you out on the guilt front. And how can one possibly not enjoy a pizza that arrives to your door in the shape of a square? To your door on Upper Pitt Street, that is.

I have a soft spot for this pizza joint. It's got character. Aside from the unique square bases this is traditional pizza - that's not to say Napoli traditional, but Friday night with a footy-game and a foil-wrapped garlic bread traditional; simple combos that make sense instead of strained gourmet monstrosities. The toppings are never oily or cheese-drowned, and the fresh bases are perfect: neither cracker-thin nor dense and bready. As I say, you can eat in - they might even give you a plate - or go for home delivery, but this is the definitive Australian take-out pizzeria: it's warm and bustling and heady with mouth-watering smells of the pizza oven. The perfect place to duck in for a cameo before everyone's sacred night of indulgence: pizza night.

I waited in line for 90 minutes tonight to get chips and a burger. Not just any kind of burger...a…read morevegetarian burger. I thought to myself, this better be damn good...AND IT WAS!!! I am the furthest from a vegetarian that you could get (I had ribs for lunch today,) so I was pretty skeptical about how a veggie burger would taste...my skepticism was unfounded because I have to admit it was a pretty good burger. I ordered an original Big Burger meal with no mustard and soy bacon. I thought blasphemy, bacon cannot be soy...but I was the blasphemous one for doubting the Lord (of the Fries.) For the fries I had the original fries (chunky + sweet potato available,) ordered Belgian mayo and Vietnamese mayo (spicy chili) on the side. The Belgian mayo was alright, but the Vietnamese mayo was bomb.com. The fries are double cooked and definitely some of the better fries I've had in Sydney...my favourite fries have been from Ogalo's, but Lord of the Fries gives it a run for its money...I will need to do some more taste testing with their other sauces. If you've been to America, I'd say that Lord of the Fries reminds me of a vegetarian Five Guys since the fries are very similar in taste and quality (minus Cajun fries) and they both offer burgers and hot dogs. The nostalgia may have influenced my review a bit...so take that into consideration. If you don't want to wait in a queue for a super long time, go in the arvo or after their official launch on Aug. 29th. Praise the Lord (of the Fries!!!) ***Update: I went again to try their hot dogs and ordered the Chicago dog. If you're a fan of hot dogs and a carnivore I would skip the hot dog and get the burger, it tastes bland and it's a bit "off," most likely missing the meat taste. If you're a vegetarian and really want a hot dog then order to your hearts content.

The waffle fries were nice and crispy and had some kind of seasoning on them that really hit well. Add a Coke and it's a perfect meal on a hot day. You definitely grade staff on a curve when you're rating a busy place! The guy running the counter at the time came to us with a smile and asked what we wanted, but we said we weren't ready and so he said no prob and went back to the kitchen instead of asking if we had any questions. If the place hadn't been super busy, I might have been annoyed but the place was very busy so it made sense. They have an easy numbering system. Your receipt has an order number, and they simply call it out when it's done. You have to stay fairly close to the counter after ordering. However, the place is so tiny inside that you can still hear the numbers from the door. I woke up that day feeling a bit hungover. I think the first words out of my mouth were "I need a hash brown, stat." Several hours later, when we went to Benbry, fate struck and I saw that they had a hangover burger! Amazing. It was actually a veggie option, with no burger. It had an egg, guacamole, aioli, cheese, BBQ sauce... and a hash brown! It was 100% fate. I had no idea if it would taste good, but obviously I needed it in my life that day. Thankfully, it did taste good. My guy got the classic Benbry and said it was good too. As a carb lover, I loved the bun especially as it was nice and large, and a good combo of fluffy and sturdy. My guy opted for the combo, and ordered a side of onion rings. We were not fans, and only ate half of them. They were fried well, and super crunchy. But they were very battery and oily, without really any onion flavor. I highly recommend this place for takeaway! There are only two small tables outside, one table inside right by the kitchen and about two or three bar stools near a ledge to eat by. We were only able to eat in by sharing the inside table with another pair. I would definitely come back though, especially when hungover. I would definitely try to come on a Tuesday/Thursday for their $12 combo deal.

I am glad that we did. I honestly cannot remember what my wife ordered that night (as I ordered the better meal - bragging rights). It was some Viet dish that was a make your own rice paper rolls. They brought the veg to the table, along with a little grill and marinated meats. The herbs and spices were perfect. The mint really came through and there is nothing I could think of to improve this meal. But wait, there is more. In my job that includes perpetual overtime we decided to order from here tonight. We went more with the Thai side of the menu. There was red curry, 'spicy' roast duck, satay veg, and pandan chicken. AND FREE PRAWN CRACKERS!!!! The entree (pandan chicken), were triangles of chicken and stuff (it was all ground and smashed) placed into pandan leaves and then steamed or something. Nice aroma and some enjoyable subtle flavours. Don't get this if you want your mouth to be smacked with flavour, but get it for a light enjoyable entree. The three mains we split were all great. There was heaps of veg in all three. Satay veg was amazing and I would eat much more veg if all veg were like this. The roast duck was good, but the sauce made the dish. And the red curry was as expected, creamy and flavourful. I really wish it had more chili as the heat was lacking in my opinion.
