I was not wowed by the Launceston cafe scene, having settled for a premade dish at one place and having walked out of another for lack of service. And indeed, I looked at this place and gave it a pass. However, on my second run, I stopped in, and was quite impressed. The look of the two-level space is great, and they have snappy wifi for posting pictures. The cafe is gluten-free, but I am not, so that was really irrelevant for me. However, they somehow make a light and fluffy waffle with delicious (and customizable) toppings. Just as enchanting was the chilli hot chocolate, prepared with what looked like some Asian crushed chillis, and delivered with a strainer so one could spice it up to taste. Service with an extra smile was part of the deal as well. The only thing I could ask of them is a larger menu, though I would note that besides the gluten-free aspect, they will make some things vegan as well. That being said, I would think that just about anyone can, and should, give this place a shot.

Good Friday and we were happy to find anywhere open for breakfast. So it was an unexpected bonus to…read morediscover Cafe Mondello served genuinely fresh squeezed OJ, great coffee and the best chilli scrambled eggs my husband has ever tasted. No wonder so many patrons were on first name terms with the staff and each other.

Cafe Mondello was recommended to us by a fellow Cafe owner in Launceston. The friendly baristas…read moreapologised for not having any hot food and said to come here. We were warned that they don't have a lot of seating and that if it was full that the cafe next door was also good. We managed to grab a table outside which was great as we got to enjoy the beautiful weather. The barista who had sent us here had actually jumped in the car and got her family a table... which was funny, but a sign that the food must be good. The coffee's here were great. My Cappuccino ($4) was gone before the food came out.. and since it was the second for the morning I thought I'd not push onto the third. My friend had a Soy Chai Latte ($4.50). I ordered the Eggs Benedict ($18.50) but asked to have Bacon instead of Ham (a frequent and easy request). The Eggs Benny was very good (see photo). The Poached egg was cooked just right (the yolk was only slightly set and the majority was runny). I enjoyed my meal and remembered thinking the portions of bacon were slightly more than what I would have expected. They could either drop the amount of bacon down a bit or add in a third Egg... I would say third egg because that's how I roll. The missus had the Corn Fritters ($23), which were very good. I got a bite and they were crunchy on the outside yet light on the inside. One friend had The Smashed Avocado ($19), Add Tomato ($3), Add Bacon ($4.50) and the other had the Eggs & Bacon ($15.50), Add Relish ($2), Add Mushrooms ($4.50). Fresh OJ ($6.50) was recommended by a few people and whilst I didn't get to try any... it seemed to disappear quite quickly. After complaining that there weren't any good cafe's for breakfast/brunch in Launceston I can now highly recommend coming to Charles Street and stopping in here... will be back, great food!
