I was not wowed by the Launceston cafe scene, having settled for a premade dish at one place and having walked out of another for lack of service. And indeed, I looked at this place and gave it a pass. However, on my second run, I stopped in, and was quite impressed. The look of the two-level space is great, and they have snappy wifi for posting pictures. The cafe is gluten-free, but I am not, so that was really irrelevant for me. However, they somehow make a light and fluffy waffle with delicious (and customizable) toppings. Just as enchanting was the chilli hot chocolate, prepared with what looked like some Asian crushed chillis, and delivered with a strainer so one could spice it up to taste. Service with an extra smile was part of the deal as well. The only thing I could ask of them is a larger menu, though I would note that besides the gluten-free aspect, they will make some things vegan as well. That being said, I would think that just about anyone can, and should, give this place a shot.

Waited 10 minutes to pay the bill. Kindness or negligence? Walked up to pay like at a pub. Ah, US vs. Aussie standards (and maybe Tassie standards?)

Why on earth didn't I think of that myself? It was so good that we almost ordered a second but decided against it for fear we wouldn't have room for the mains. Steak was cooked to perfection and the mushroom sauce was to die for. I could have eaten that sauce alone and been totally content it was so flavoursome and delicious. The burger was actually really fresh tasting- if you want a greasy, American style burger this is not the place for you. This burger meat pattie tender and juicy and "spicy chipotle" did not disappoint- it was extremely hot! Finally, the tortellini was full of flavour and the portion a decent size (particularly if you are having entrees). Desserts were not too rich and obviously the ice cream was scrumptious. The only critique I have is that I assume they were understaffed tonight (either in the kitchen or waitstaff) as service was very slow, and I heard a lot of people complaining and waiters apologising. I'm sure this is not their usual routine and we may have caught them on a bad night. We waited quite a while for mains and then dessert and did not bother waiting for the bill (went up to the counter to retrieve it ourselves). We noticed many around us also waited quite a while for their meals. The food was so good though that this really didn't impact my opinion of the restaurant too much and I would definitely return!

Turns out it was empty because it was nearly closing time, but they still happily made me a delicious mocha (I couldn't decide if I wanted coffee or hot chocolate in the end) and even directed me to have a look around up the back of their shop while I was there. Turns out they have a craft workshop up the back, and sell all sorts of goodies from funky embroidery kits to recycled yarn to vintage style clothing patterns to origami paper to hand made colouring in books! They hold regular workshops in the space which is a concept that I absolutely love. I picked up a few gifts in time for Christmas while I was there. They use local organic milk, and locally-sourced in-season produce wherever possible. And the coffee is excellent! The cafe had a lovely feel to it, and friendly staff, and a range of inviting looking sweet treats on display - I think I'll have to go back and sample a few! I was really impressed by this place, and I'm so glad I stopped by!

Seems to be the norm all around Launceston actually. Love the big table out the back available for workshops, large groups, etc. Love the little knick knacks doted about for sale. Love the diverse range of patrons who seem to frequent the place. Love the ethos used in the business, from the little I can see. Last little note: Coffees do not come strong unless requested.
