The pizza maker was wearing gloves and handling food, but the trouble is he kept wiping his hands on his dirty trousers. Food has gone downhill. Won't go back there. The previous owner Adrian had a personality. The new owners have none. Since writing this review, I mentioned my concerns to a doctor friend, and he said he had a similar experience. He saw them wiping their gloved hands over their clothing and then putting their hands back in assorted food trays. He won't go back there either.

However, for what Sugo is and what they provide, 5 stars. Not your typical pizza bar. I ordered (by recommendation) & paid via Menulog & received my first occasion shopper 10% discount - all went well. I arrived at the exact designated time and the pizzas were hot & ready to go! The gentleman serving us was lovely, polite and professional, and we parted with a joke, a nice guy. My partner also wanted a half chicken and we were surprised with by their reasonably extensive menu. Roasted Lilydale chicken, which was well seasoned with a beautiful flavor, a small choice of salads and roasted vegetables, and the usual offenders like chicken wings, schnitzels, desserts/drinks etc but with a few surprises, like polpette which are quite uncommon, the latter my meal when I next visit. The Margherita and Siciliano pizzas I ordered were commended by my children. They weren't paper thin, like a recent trend where the pizza is just too thin to hold anything, but still quite thin & well formed, not oily and base well cooked, with tasty ingredients. I couldn't find fault in what they presented us with!

Situated in a charming stone cottage with a true Italian Pizzeria feel, Grotto makes seriously good boutique gourmet pizzas. Unlike hit and miss franchise pizza bars run by random casuals, the pizzas here are pretty special. Not quite as good as EST on East terrace on an overall basis but some of the pizzas are slightly better. Firstly they are thin and crispy and very well cooked, secondly the sauce is home made Napoletana. They are not oily or salty and they have imported Peroni red to wash it down with! We went on a busy period on Friday night, normally a period where you can guarantee delays and service issues but the opposite was true, we got looked after better than most retardants! The owner even came up to our table and asked if we were happy! Go for the meatball pizza (roast pork and fennel meatballs with basil and Parmesan) or the "pumpkin, pig & kid" washed down with one of their Italian reds. They even heat up the home made zeppole!

This is a suitable philosophy for the people at Grotto, who have chosen to keep it simple and do the one thing that they do best: simply good pizza. The Salty Pig is a popular choice and, like its restaurant, is nice and simple. It boasts numerous types of ham and is neither too basic, nor too fancy. I tire of restaurants creating overly ambitious meals that never quite hit the mark. Good food doesn't necessarily have to be exotic or expensive; all it takes is a good understanding of harmonising flavours, and Grotto's pizzas do just that. Hidden away from the business of The Parade, Grotto is surprisingly quiet despite the relatively short distance from the main street. Though casual, the interior is charming and intimate, and is suitable for a quiet dinner for two or group dining. If you've got a specific craving for pizza, I suggest passing on the cafes for a night and giving the masters a try.

That means this place has been in existence for more than 40 years. That makes you stop and think. I needed to try this place, I needed to know HOW a pizza place could last for more than 40 years. I got my answer the moment I entered the place. The first thing you see when you enter is a big black beautiful wood oven. This thing has seen many years of service and it's still working its magic today. The rest of the place looks like it hasn't been upgraded for as long, but the secret has to be in the food, right? RIGHT! We had our pizzas packed and journeyed home. It was long drive, let me tell you. The smokey smell of the pizzas was amazing. When we finally bit into them we were not disappointed. The toppings were plentiful and the taste was an experience that only a good old fashioned wood oven could provide.

You can't miss it with all the sumo wrestlers on the front of the store. This takeaway store has a little bit of a twist though. They sell Banh Mi, Salad Bowls and yummy grilled meats. But, they also had Buffalo Wings on the menu! What? Buffalo wings in a Vietnamese store. Well... I just gotta try these. And they were pretty much what I expected. An Asian version of buffalo wings. The sauce was almost like a peanut sauce. The wings were crispy though, and had good flavour. But, I wasn't convinced with the sauce. Oh well... We wanted to be healthy (cough) and order a salad bowl to go with the wings. That was also ok. Great dressing and full of veggies! But the roast pork was slightly burnt on the crackling, which was disappointing. They must have popped it on a grill plate to crisp it up. Overall, it was ok. I am not going to run back. But, on this end of town there are not a huge amount of alternatives for Vietnamese. If you have a craving, give it a go.
