The San Diego Ballet Nutcracker is fantastic! Definitely my favorite company in the area and I've seen them all.

The costumes were lush, the staging simple but effective and the singing was divine. While this is a tragedy, and we all know the ending, there were a couple of comedic moments and the sword fighting was exciting. There was even some ballet in the mix. This opera is sung in French, but there are English subtitles displayed above the stage. The San Diego Symphony accompanied the performance skillfully. It's such a pleasure to hear a live orchestra. Masks were required inside the theater and proof of vax or recent Covid test necessary to obtain entry. Tickets start at $35 on up. Parking at the concourse was ample and $15 for the event. While we had seats toward the back of the orchestra section, this venue is not overly large so the seating is fairly good anywhere. Opera is for everyone! If you've never been, this performance may make you into an opera lover. If you're already an opera fan, you will definitely enjoy this performance.

Friendly security staff on the way in. Opera seemed well acted even if it was not my fave show of all time. Balboa theater aisles are very narrow, and when someone wants to get up everyone has to stand up. But overall I enjoyed it, and if there was a show the opera was doing that sounded innovative, I'd consider coming again. Great patrons and way to kick off Pride week!

The performance was wonderful and the voices of the cast were absolutely beautiful. The theater itself is large and you can see very well. I'm not very tall and even though people were seated in front of me I had a perfect view of the stage. The seats are comfortable and the ushers are very helpful. I believe there are concession stands on every floor as well as bars where you can get soft drinks or alcoholic beverages. The concessions are quite expensive but you expect that when you're at a theater of any kind. Very easy to find parking in the area. There is a large parking structure right next to the Civic Center as well as different parking lots where you can easily just park and walk across the street to the theater. The only rule that I have seen is that you do not bring in a bag that is larger than 12 in by 12 in. You go through a back check and walk through a metal detector but that's pretty common for any type of concert as well. Inside is very comfortable and I always enjoy coming here for a performance.

This being downtown San Diego of course you need to plan ahead for parking, but there are plenty of Lots nearby and walking distance, one of them that leads right into the parking lot of the theater. One of the positive aspects of being downtown is that you have plenty of options for dinner before or after the show. Of course you may want to make reservations ahead. They always offer concessions, of different alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, as well as little charcuterie board type items, and candy, Etc. Of course just like any other venue of this type, it is priced above what you would normally pay for those items. I always try to sit in the orchestra section because I feel there is more leg room, and I hate to feel cramped. The seats also seem a bit more comfortable in that section. I will say I honestly don't think you could have a bad seat in this theater though. The sound is usually fine, but I will say for Moulin Rouge I had trouble hearing what they were saying especially during the songs. I love that everyone is always so helpful when trying to find your seat, they will walk you to your section and show you exactly where you need to go, which is nice because it can get chaotic with so many people ushering in. Overall this is a great location and the shows they have are amazing. Definitely reccomend looking at the season and seeing what they have to offer, they're is usually something for everyone

Since their very first lesson, about two years ago, my child has experienced opportunities, musical roles, and celebratory moments we never could have imagined. Jonathan's teaching honors my child's individual voice, development, and artistic journey--as well as connects with interests outside of singing. He identifies strengths, builds skill with precision, and does it all with JOY and genuine care. He makes learning so enjoyable that my teenager looks forward to every single lesson -- and anyone raising a teen knows how monumental that is. Jonathan's deep expertise and authentic mentorship have shaped not only my child's vocal abilities, but also his confidence and trajectory. It is unbelievable how much my teen has grown in his range and as a vocalist since working with Jonathan. I turned to my husband a few weeks ago and said, "When was the last time we went to the ballet?"…read moreand I heard those words you NEVER want to hear and that word was "NEVER"! Through our years dating, traveling or residing in cosmopolitan cities we have both seen our share of musicals, plays, and operas. We have seen performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Lincoln Center in New York, the National Theatre in London. I've even had the pleasure to see the Royal Ballet in Russia when I worked in international student exchange, but I don't want to get too political about Russia right now! Swan Lake is probably the most famous and classical ballet I've had the pleasure to view. However, when I saw the Great Gatsby was being performed here in San Diego, all I could think of was tap dance and fringed flapper girls! When you modernize anything, all of of a sudden it can appeal to a newer and larger audience. So, last weekend we booked the matinee, a great option for when you want to brunch beforehand or dinner afterwards. We enjoy sitting in the loge, in dance, it's a great perspective to see things from above, in addition you have less people coming and going for various breaks. Although, I must admit a more considerate crowd than a typical sporting event. The show was fun and everything we hoped. A little jazz, some tap, and a lot of ballet. Prior to the performance and at intermission, students of the ballet school sold programs and merchandise to suporrt their programs and the arts. We have to keep the arts alive through dance and movement. Many, many, years ago, I taught ballroom dance and I had a student by the name of Jaffe. It became a huge shock me that I was the dance teacher of a prima ballerina's father. Susan Jaffe, danced with American Ballet Theatre and with the world famous Baryshnikov! I NEVER dreamed of being a ballerina, but I believe in the arts and supporting all art forms. So, let it be known, it is good to step outside your comfort zone, try something new, you NEVER know what you might like, you NEVER know who you might meet or what you might discover. NEVER say NEVER and if you want to try something new, go modern versus traditional. Up next, The California Ballet Company will be performing "Beer and Ballet". Get your man out there... #TheCaliforniaBallet #TheGreatGatsby #LogeLife #BeerandBallet
