This was our first hotel on our Italy trip at our first stop, Florence! We were happy with this hotel, and it was a short walk to shops, the Duomo and various other attractions. We especially enjoyed the courtyard, which was a nice place to have a glass of vino and write in my travel journal after sightseeing! We enjoyed breakfast in the courtyard, too! The restrooms were spacious, especially spacious in terms of European hotels! Staff were friendly and we did not experience any language barriers. I recommend San Gallo! read more

Cannot say enough good things about this hotel. It was super cute, clean, well maintained. The staff was helpful and patient for the most part. There was a fairly Rowdy tour group from the United States that took over the lobby one night and the gentleman at the front desk seemed a bit annoyed. He came in several times and asked them to be quiet. I appreciate the recommendations for restaurants and help interpreting the Italian menu for delivery on the night that we were just too exhausted to leave the hotel. The better name for this place is the San Gallo Dungeons. 1. Clearly not a 4 star hotel by any means with facilities quite outdated. 2. For the price, this place is lacking in service. For multi-stay days, need to remind the desk repeatedly for service and towels. 3. The breakfast is a buffet style with a lot of pastries and very much lack of cooked food. The scrambled eggs clearly were not made of eggs? Maybe it was made from cardboards. 4. Only upside -- quiet location on the outskirts of town. I have all good things to say about this hotel with one exception: location. Being a good 25-30 minute walk from central Florence (i.e. the Duomo) is not ideal, but you may be willing to do it if you don't plan on going back-and-forth or if you are willing to Uber it. Otherwise, it's very clean, has a nice lobby and fitness center, with decent size rooms and very good continental breakfast. The best part for me was the shower, which had four nozzles on the walls in addition to the overhead sprayer. That's something you can get used to! read more

A wonderful hotel. I left 3 gold bracelets in my room. They meant a lot tome. My tour guide called the San Gallo and they had found them. I had to change my original edit of this review from a three to two star. Ugh. So this rating and review is strictly for the hotel itself. This is no way reflects on the staff that have been absolute five stars. The staff are not the problem here. The rooms, and we saw three of them, are extremely dated. Just the draperies alone look like they are they from the eighties or nineties. In the last room we landed on, the romantic room which we upgraded to because it's our honeymoon and we needed a better room than the first one they gave us, has an entire side wall next to a window that is chipping paint. In the upper part of the ceiling, a combination of a hole and mold has contributed to the big problem of gnats or mosquitoes in the room leading to unpleasant bites and irritations. The last thing I will point out is the beds. I don't know about you, but comfort is always key. Especially when you are traveling, and especially when you are on a honeymoon. Well, this is where San Gallo just does not deliver. We have been in other hotels while in Europe. I get the whole twin beds put together thing. But, when the twin beds suck to begin with, it really doesn't help. Absolutely horrible and uncomfortable. I waited two nights, three room switches and taking turns on different sides of the beds before writing this review. I want to give it two stars because I feel that for the price they are charging, and mostly the upgrade charge of 80 € a night for this room is appalling. This is a four star hotel in Florence... Some other things about this room and bathroom. Lots of scuffs on the walls and the entire room is on a corner of three of other rooms. The maid service at 9:30 am was letting the doors slam contributing to an even worse sleeping experience. In the bathroom, the tub has old, discoloration and cracks, as well as the walls. The pipe fixture for the shower is practically coming off. The air conditioning unit seems to never go below 24c. It gets cool in the room yes, but it is always on, never gauging and generally doesn't seem to work. Lastly, this place has a horrible, I mean horrible breakfast. I have eaten or tried to eat a lot of hotel breakfasts in my day. This is one of the worst. The only good thing was the OJ that was fresh squeezed. Coffee was a disgrace to coffee everywhere. The toast makes the brave little toaster want to run away screaming hoping for a better life, for a better bread. Horrible. read more

Of the three hotels my husband and I stayed at during our honeymoon, this was my favorite. The front desk team is awesome--they consistently greeted us on our way in and out of the lobby, proactively offered to give directions or order us a taxi, and were always glad to offer recommendations for things to do and restaurants. One gentleman who made us reservations both for lunch downtown and dinner nearby was spot on with his suggestions. On our way to dinner at Alfredo, he saw us in the lobby and let us know that our table was ready. What!! That is some seriously good service. Speaking of service, the bartenders at the hotel bar were great. When my husband asked whether a popular drink we had seen others enjoying was considered a "girly drink," the other started laughing and he had his answer. The gentleman who made our drinks was quite talented and we enjoyed the chatter with him and his colleague. Plus, they brought snacks to enjoy with the drinks, which is always appreciated. The room was pretty nice and included a good variety of TV channels. The shower pressure was pitiful and the air conditioning was not available--meh. Wifi was sketchy at times, but hopefully nobody goes to Florence for wifi. Breakfast was quite good, with very attentive service and a nice variety of offerings (scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, lots of bread, zillions of pastries, fresh fruit, coffee brought to your table!) The service is 5 stars! They work very hard to make you happy and comfortable here. The front desk worked to help find us a better room and also did anything in their power to make my stay more pleasant, including sending a bottle of Prosecco and snacks to our room for our honeymoon. The only reason I am giving 3 stars right now, it that there are many things that could be better about the rooms that is not in the staff's power to fix Most of the rooms (I have looked at 4 now), have a very standard bed. They are on box springs at least, but nothing luxurious or super comfortable. The romantic suite had a slightly more comfortable bed, but our backs were still not happy the next morning. We could also hear lots of doors slamming and people moving in rooms around us. The refrigerators in all 4 rooms seem to only half work. They will keep the snacks inside from melting, but not keep leftovers or shopping goods cold enough to not spoil, nor give you a nice frosty water at the end of a hot day. The worst offense though, is this really dumb design the bedroom lights have. I understand that it is a safety thing to have them turn on when you enter the room, though even that seems unnecessary as who has trouble turning on the light when they enter a room? The really dumb part is that you are unable to turn the lights off for 5 minutes. So if your wife decides to sleep before you, expect to wake her up unpleasantly for five minutes every time you have to open your door! The night concierge tells me it is Italian law, but I was still able to turn the lights OFF at the last 2 Italian hotels, AND it is really stupid to not have control of your own lights! This law made to help safety actually put me in an unsafe situation when the timer on the lights expired and I had to feel my way across a room with unmemorized layout, avoiding luggage. I must reiterate though, that the flaws of this hotel are to be blamed on the property owner's lack of maintenance and poorly thought out Italian law. The staff that work here are practically perfect and deserve an immaculate 5 star hotel to operate in. read more

I would have given a 5/5, would go again, recommend to a friend and so on so forth had our bed been a little softer. Maybe mattress toppers aren't a thing in Italy, and neither are real blankets. So the bed left something to be desired in the standard room, but aside from that, the room was perfect. Everything was clean and in decent condition. WIFI is now free, you can login with social networking accounts or if you'd rather they not get any new information on you, you can request a separate account and password from reception. We stayed for three nights in August. The AC works and is not loud, street noise is minimal and we didn't hear anything from other rooms. Overall a very nice quiet stay for someone who wakes up at the drop of a pin. Extremely walkable to all essential sights in Florence, convenient and relatively inexpensive taxi drive away from the station if you're leaving in a hurry but still want to eat your lovely breakfast (good selection of both sweet and savory, please do try the brioche) and even lovelier coffee. It isn't a budget hotel but we felt we got enough glitz and glamour for the price we paid. Mind you we didn't get a particularly great deal because we were extremely late in booking. Book early if you definitely know you are going! All staff were lovely and extremely helpful and polite and very good at English (not a given even in Florence). Hospitality is definitely a huge 5/5 in this hotel in terms of staff friendliness and readiness to help you. Would definitely stay again. read more

The plus would have to be the room had a small patio area for two for smoking or bringing some food back to the room (no view though.) My family and I stayed at San Gallo Palace 17 Sept - 19 Sept 2014. We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful hotel. My husband and I loved our room. The beds are comfortable and they offer additional pillow options (6 other options if I remember correctly) upon request, which we took advantage of. The staff were helpful and polite. We were greeted warmly every time we arrived and left. I was very happy with the level of service we received from the staff. We enjoyed breakfast each morning downstairs where they offer a fantastic spread, buffet style. Florence is small city so all of the sights were within walking distance. We did not have a view of the Duomo, but it's only a short walk away. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again in the future! read more

Stayed in San Gallo Palace as a third legs of trip started in Como. Hotel was located in just outside of city definitely not a convenient locations for the tourist. Only handful restaurants were near by. Room was bit smaller size than previous hotel we stayed. Hotel elevator was smallest and slowest I have ever seen. Restaurant did serve decent Americans style full breakfast buffet with good Expresso coffee. Do I stay again if I'm in Florence, to tell the truth I'm not sure if I would, all depending on prices they may charge. read more

The front desk staff at the San Gallo are unparalleled in their helpfulness and friendliness. The room was very nice and spotlessly clean. There are three very good restaurants within a short walk- Alfredo, Perseus, and da Tito. Nice little garden terrace next to our room. It is a healthy walk to the Duomo and the waitress at breakfast was indifferent in her service. These were the only negatives to the otherwise perfect stay. read more
