The mold spot in the ceiling. It's on flash but you get the point. This is the romantic room mind you.

I had to change my original edit of this review from a three to two star. Ugh. So this rating and review is strictly for the hotel itself. This is no way reflects on the staff that have been absolute five stars. The staff are not the problem here. The rooms, and we saw three of them, are extremely dated. Just the draperies alone look like they are they from the eighties or nineties. In the last room we landed on, the romantic room which we upgraded to because it's our honeymoon and we needed a better room than the first one they gave us, has an entire side wall next to a window that is chipping paint. In the upper part of the ceiling, a combination of a hole and mold has contributed to the big problem of gnats or mosquitoes in the room leading to unpleasant bites and irritations. The last thing I will point out is the beds. I don't know about you, but comfort is always key. Especially when you are traveling, and especially when you are on a honeymoon. Well, this is where San Gallo just does not deliver. We have been in other hotels while in Europe. I get the whole twin beds put together thing. But, when the twin beds suck to begin with, it really doesn't help. Absolutely horrible and uncomfortable. I waited two nights, three room switches and taking turns on different sides of the beds before writing this review. I want to give it two stars because I feel that for the price they are charging, and mostly the upgrade charge of 80 € a night for this room is appalling. This is a four star hotel in Florence... Some other things about this room and bathroom. Lots of scuffs on the walls and the entire room is on a corner of three of other rooms. The maid service at 9:30 am was letting the doors slam contributing to an even worse sleeping experience. In the bathroom, the tub has old, discoloration and cracks, as well as the walls. The pipe fixture for the shower is practically coming off. The air conditioning unit seems to never go below 24c. It gets cool in the room yes, but it is always on, never gauging and generally doesn't seem to work. Lastly, this place has a horrible, I mean horrible breakfast. I have eaten or tried to eat a lot of hotel breakfasts in my day. This is one of the worst. The only good thing was the OJ that was fresh squeezed. Coffee was a disgrace to coffee everywhere. The toast makes the brave little toaster want to run away screaming hoping for a better life, for a better bread. Horrible.

The Prosecco and snacks sent to the room compliments of the hotel when they heard it was our honeymoon.

The hotel was centrally located, and it's one of the more modern, elegant hotels we've stayed at during our trip. The Duomo and Piazza Santa Maria Novella were steps away from the hotel, and it's a less than 10 minute taxi to the train station. Their complimentary breakfast was amazing. They offered a huge variety of items including hot food, tortes, cereals, fruit, cheeses, parfaits, quiches, etc. I enjoyed a latte every morning with them. Our room at Hotel Spadai was excellent. Very spacious with tall ceilings and had plenty of room for us to lay out 2 large pieces of luggage and 2 small carry-ons. The bathroom was big as well, but the shower was disproportionate to it. The shower felt so much smaller, and what's weird was its two double doors. The doors met at the corner of the shower and didn't close all the way, so water could easily escape to the floor. Other than that, I would 1000% stay at this hotel again next time I'm in Florence.

The room and bathroom were spacious, luxurious, and beautifully designed. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and every detail of the experience felt thoughtful and elevated. The amenities were fantastic -- especially the unexpected happy hour at the bar, which was such a lovely touch. And the breakfast buffet? Truly unmatched. I'm convinced every future hotel breakfast will pale in comparison. I still think about the incredibly fresh raspberries and strawberries I had every morning! I also loved the robes and slippers provided in the room, which made the stay feel even more comfortable and indulgent. The location is perfect -- close to everything and just steps from the Duomo, yet surprisingly peaceful and not overly noisy. The hotel itself smells amazing and is decorated in such a beautiful, modern style. I honestly can't say enough wonderful things about this hotel. It was worth every penny, and I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Would you spend the night in what used to be a women's prison in the 12th century?…read more The Pagliazza Tower is the oldest building in Florence. It was built in the 6th century AD by the Byzantines as part of the "newer" city walls to augment the older Roman ones and protect the city during the Gothic War. The circular shape, which was rare in the Middle Ages, reflects ancient Roman building techniques. The tower rests on a circular wall that surrounded a swimming pool or Roman thermal bath. In the basement there is a calidarium, with brick floor channels for heat, which would have been used for steam baths. According to our guide, Roberta, it was used as a women's prison in the 12th century. Pagliazza references the straw mat bedding upon which the inmates slept. Later on, it was converted into the bell tower of a church. Eventually it was acquired as a private residence. Today it is home to a luxury hotel with a small museum and restaurants. The museum showcases artifacts from excavations dating back to the Roman and medieval times. Although we didn't stay here, the history of the Pagliazza Tower is very interesting.

Checking in was easy with an accommodating staff. The rooms are nice, but not fabulous, The elevator system confuses everyone! The breakfast (complementary for us) was quite good. While the location is fabulous and the staff quite nice, I expected a slightly nicer room for the price, but as they say, location, location, location.

We were starving, it was rainy and just got off the train from Rome so we even had our luggage. The service was impeccable, they took care of our coats and luggage right away and seated us. The restaurant was peaceful and gorgeous. I still remember thinking "oh awkward we are underdressed for this!" I usually don't get impressed by decors of restaurants but the color and the elements and the layout of the restaurant somehow just gave me the relaxation I needed. We loved our entire experience but the highlight was the food. Every single dish was beautifully prepared and so so delicious. We fell in love with truffle here. And don't think we have had truffle that blew our mind elsewhere after (including Michelin two and three stars). I can taste the chefs mastery of the ingredients. No dish was overly complicated but each ingredient and sauce just complemented each other perfectly. You feel like you are in the forest where the food comes from. It's one of the meals I remember the most vividly, even after 4 years. Even on our culinary journey throughout Italy, this was a clear highlight. My only regret is we didn't purchase the truffle products here. I highly recommend this restaurant!
