While I still prefer the charm of old Spanish churches with their simple grey limestone facade (and yes, we have many of those in our country!), it is refreshing for me to see this church with its towering twin spires. And by towering, I would say that you can really see it and feel it when you stand outside San Sebastian Church. I got a similar feeling when I walked inside, as I saw the lines of pillars, and crystal chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling.
And yes, no wonder it is different from the limestone churches I love - this church is all made of steel, the only one in the Philippines. Reading up on its history, I was intrigued to know, though, that the original structure was actually made of wood, not steel, and was burned down during the 1651 Chinese revolt. I wonder, then, if the current structure was made of steel to make it resistant to the elements.
The church has been declared a national historical landmark, and is in the running for UNESCO World Heritage status. It will be interesting if it gets the recognition as all our UNESCO World Heritage churches so far are Spanish ones. read more
