If you look at Plaza Cristo Rey, you might think that there's really nothing special about the place. It's essentially a gated open space with a huge image of Jesus Christ near a stage. But I learned just recently that this area actually has historical significance and it's considered as one of the landmarks of Makati.
In a plaque displayed near the gate of Plaza Cristo Rey, you'll see that the space used to be San Pedro Macati Cemetery, which was part of the patio of the centuries-old church now known as Saints Peter and Paul Parish. After the Second World War, the cemetery was transferred and a portion was made into a plaza to mark the historical importance of the place.
The church still makes use of the plaza during the Holy Week and fiestas. In fact, it is the venue for the Bailes de los Arcos (Dance of the Arches), a traditional thanksgiving dance performed during the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul Parish. read more
