We also had the rice of the day from Le Petit Tamboril, which was a paella of rice boiled in a yellow seafood broth along with chunks of shrimp and calamari. The rice had a deep, umami, seafood flavor from the broth and perfectly crispy, caramelized bits (socarrat) on the bottom of the pan. Everything here came at a great value, and the lively, hip atmosphere made for a fun place to dine!

Santiago de Compostela is an interesting town with 2 kinds of visitors - "pilgrims" who just…read morecompleted all or part of the Camino de Santiago walking trail, and visitors in town to see the famous Santiago Cathedral towards which all the pilgrims are walking. I've been a pilgrim 3x and the food you get at towns and villages on the trail is so homestyle and down-to-earth. Getting into bigger cities is a shock because there feels like there's so much engineering going into "delicacies" and "gourmet dishes" fit for a city restaurant. The beauty of Fogar de Galicia is they're bringing you the kinds of homestyle foods we had on the road as pilgrims, straight from local farms. I got a zucchini stir-fry that was so immensely fresh; a "shakshuka" (a hearty tomato/cumin/egg dish) where the egg yolks were the deepest orange, and a great cider made in Galicia. My friends loved the glutinous options too, all farm-to-table. The place is simple, with low-key counter-ordering and basic table service. The ambience is festive almost all the time since there are so many pilgrims with so much to celebrate! It was an awesome find and I hope to eat there again on my next Camino.

An accidental find on my last day…read more I had just finished a morning tour and needed to fuel up for the afternoon activities. As I only had dinner reservations planned out I figured I'd wing lunch or take suggestions from tour guides and/or locals. I had a good hour to kill before my tattoo appointment so I figured a proper meal was needed since my dinner reservation was way later. After passing a few places, this one caught my eye so I stopped. Something felt right so I went right in without even looking at their menu. Turns out they offer a 3 course meal so I went for it. My first course was a salad topped with anchovies. It was so damn good. I had zero expectations and ended up being super impressed. The second course was a soup that was exactly what I needed as I had started not feeling good with the low temps. I ended up only having a couple bites of the cheesecake because as it turns outI needed more than an hour to finish my meal. I did end up taking it to go so I could have it later on in the day. Everything was so delicious. I'm glad I was able to have a proper Galician meal. The service was spot on. The lady working was super nice and attentive.
