Amazing food-we got the tapas! great atmosphere-laid back Central American authenticity. Staff went over an above even helped us to print out theatre tickets in a mad dash on the way out. Only about 200 yards from the Grand - perfect pre-drinks spot :) thanks Sandinista!

Viva Cuba is a brilliant Tapas bar, far and away the best in Leeds in my book…read more It's easily missed really, inside an ordinary looking building that looks more like it should house a bank than a funky restaurant. Because of this, I had gone past it on Kirkstall Road for years, without really ever noticing it, but a group of my friends have been eating there every week for the last few months, and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I joined them a few weeks back. It's the sort of place with that has an effortlessly cool decor and atmosphere - the dark wooden interior and loud (but not too loud) music are the main reason that the place has such an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Onto the food - I've eaten tapas in Spain a fair few times, and I have to say, this place recreates the real thing better than anywhere else I've eaten at, including a few places IN Spain. The usual dishes are present, but they all seem elevated to a higher level than other tapas bars - particularly the chorizo and the olive bread. Oh my. In short, it's authentic, it's cheap, it has an amazing atmosphere and attracts amazing people, and it should be tried by anyone remotely interested in tapas.

Been here a few times now and the food is always well cooked and service is spot on…read more The only small negative is, that despite asking our waitress if it would be possible to bring our 13 separate dishes to our table not all at the same time, as has happened before, she totally ignored our request. As I said earlier the food is delicious but with 4 people on a table with 13 dishes, you feel really cramped and a lot of food is cold when you finally get round to eating it. Surely it would make more sense to bring out 3 or 4 dishes at a time.

We got there having already eaten so can't comment on the food, other than that the offerings chalked up behind the bar looked pretty good. The barman was friendly and brought us over a ramekin of wasabi peas to go with our drinks. As mentioned in my check-in, the jukebox is pretty excellent. A nice mix of old and new, with some eclectic choices and some classics, and £1 for five songs. On a Saturday night there wasn't a wealth of atmosphere and it was pretty quiet. Last orders were called shortly after we started our drinks so we called it a night then. I think I'll return to De Nada at some point for a casual drink with friends and perhaps food, just not for a rip-roaring night out.

The food here is always great and about on par with the prices to be expected in Chorlton, the portions are on the smallish side but are priced within that 'tapas order when you feel like it' range so it's reasonably acceptable, you'd probably need to order a couple of things if you were desiring a full meal. They have a decent range of cask beer and the keg on offer is not your average mainstream beers either which is always a pleasant occurence. Because of it's location, it is never packed solid with people so it is a great option in Chorlton if you are after a beer and a bite without contending with the usual Chorlton crowds especially on a Friday/Saturday evening. De Nada has a lunch time special running pretty much constantly where you can grab an empanada and a beer for £5 which is a bargain. There is good outdoor seating on a front deck for the warmer months. In Winter this is relegated primarily to smokers which can be a slight turn off when you are walking up to the bar, but it's fairly common practice around Manchester.

For mains we had -Beef Buritto which came with guacamole, cream, black beans and rice and the Mexi Burger ,which was a 9oz burger covered in beef chilli served with curly fries salad and cowslaw. Both were very large portions and we struggled to finish them The food quality, service and lively atmosphere all added to a great experience, check it out.

Livin la vida loca. I do like Mexican food, that obviously had something to do with the transformation. But just being in Las Iguanas, which has real personality in not only its decor but the staff too, brightened me up and got me ready for the weekend. It's about a tenner for a decent main, which comes in a very hearty portion and as I requested, particularly spicy. It's not just Mexican, there are all sorts of latin american dishes from Brazil to Chile and back again via Argentina and the rest. There's something for everyone. Red and green should never be seen, except in Las Iguanas.

I love a sour cocktail, and had a paloma, they were tasty, but there was definitely more ice than liquid! The menu was explained to us (it's a pretty clear menu, and I have, you know, eaten outside my own house before) We were sat on a smaller than average table, which I didn't think was a problem until I saw how the dishes were served for three out of four of us. We'd ordered the xinxim, gorgeous combo of chicken and crayfish in a mild, creamy, coconutty sauce with rice and green beans. And man, do I feel sorry for the poor sod washing up! It was pretty, but not practical, especially when they didn't remove the dishes from our starters straight away! Tasty, but I felt like I would smash a pot with clumsy elbows! I'd go again, but not out of happy hour! And special requests can be awkward, but if they aren't going to be followed through with, I'd really rather they would just say!

Our waiter was very friendly and happy to advise and check our questions about food with the chef if he didn't know the answer. The food was just heavenly! I would love to come back.

Generally, you can save 25% off food with Gourmet Society membership but this offer takes it further. Inside, the decor is fantastic being set in an old Methodist Church just off Deansgate, accessed via a ramp with a very steep gradient or a large step. The inside area is a stunning old building, decorated with cow print. The cocktail menu was rather expensive, they also didn't have anything basic and seemed to have weird, wacky cocktails which I really didn't fancy, standard spirits and mixers were also rather expensive too. I didn't end up going for a cocktail in the end - one of the best places in the city for a cocktail has to be the Hard Rock Cafe, a 70cl cocktail and a collectable glass for under £13 meant I'd head thereafter for some booze before heading home - the selection here didn't cut it for me. Although known for their steak offerings, I opted for the Spatchcock Chicken. I did enjoy the flavours of the chicken although the leg piece didn't have a lot of meat on, I really enjoyed the breast part - I just wish it would have been more breast. The flavours, spices and sauces were good but I still think it didn't represent value for money at all, this dish alone was £18 without any sides! For sides, I decided to opt for chips/fries, at £5 a portion I expected them to be good, but they just weren't. I found them to be poorly seasoned as well as a little overcooked and soggy, for such a price you'd expect them to be good, fresh chips when in all honestly I've pulled out better fries from my freezer at a fraction of the cost, this meant although I did enjoy a half of my chicken, it didn't cut it as nothing went with it. Considering they only have one lot of chips, there's nothing which would go with steak either, who wants steak and mash? All the staff seemed friendly, with the exception of my waitress who seemed more like an angry mother, who seemed to treat me and my party like a child, for example forcing us to use the menu as a placemat for our food. I also found it a shame to see they were unable to adapt dishes, now this is fine dining, a high-end place with mains costing at least £18 and some items going up towards the £100 mark, a place like this being unable to adapt dishes is truly dissapointing especially for the price mark, they were unable to remove sauces etc as it came "pre-marinated" in many cases. My server also seemed a little rude and easily confused, for example, she couldn't understand when my friend ordered a starter as a main course which was down to the fact he didn't want anything with spices on, as every dish came pre-marinated other than the steak. She did get there in the end, but even that was a struggle. There was also a long wait for food, it at one point felt like I'd never get my food which was quite frustrating as well. They didn't seem overly busy and it didn't seem like anything the large open kitchen couldn't handle either. They do have gluten-free labelled on the menu and do have a few choices, sadly their gluten-free bread is seeded bread which I hate (I wish everywhere didn't put seeds in bread as it ruins it!), also there were no gluten-free starters on the menu which again was dissapointing. Do bear in mind also that this place has a rather high service-charge at 12.5% regardless of how many people are dining, this is also applied before any discounts so even though our group of 3 saved £10 per person, this amount was also subject to the service charge, so that alone worked out close to £9. Considering the long wait for food and the attitude of my server, I don't understand the justification behind that by any means. A high-end place which doesn't live up to the price tag, some good flavours in the chicken and nice decor warrant an extra star but I won't be rushing back to this place. 2*

Two words; Mexican Heaven. Ok now for the rest of the words…read more Gringos restaurant, Huddersfield is one of those places that are a hidden nugget of a town, that soon becomes a little bit of a local legend. You walk in and you're greeted almost instantly by a member of staff, before you get to know your bearings, you see a brightly decorated restaurant floor. Purple and red are the colours of choice. The tables are grand wood things with matching grand wooden chairs. You're seated, and menus are delivered and drink orders taken. Scanning over the menu, there's something for everyone who's willing to try something different to pizza, pasta and curry. Don't worry if you don't know the difference between a chimichanga and an enchilada, it's all there for explanation. Personally, I decided to try the chimichanga. I was not disappointed. First I was in awe at the size of the plate. Portion size, HUGE. The gargantuan chimichanga was full of the spicy lamb filling I ordered, and there was a nice portion of refried beans and potato wedges, all tex-mexed out, naturally. I'm glad I didn't go for the starter, by the time I'd finished my absolutely tasty meal, I was packed out to the limits, as was the rest of the overstuffed and replete members of my party. There were eight of us in total, and as we had pre-booked the table, sat down, and ordered all before 7pm, and the bill was brought to us before the hour of 8, all of our mains were 241, or bogof depending on how you look at it. In my opinion it was a royal bargain. Call it £1.50 for a small coke, and the total bill price for each person was £6.50. The only down side of our eating experience was that we were so full with our yumtastic and sizeable meals that we were all unable to roll our bellies forward to fill them with deserts, which were not two for one, but were very tasty in their appeal. So pleased we were with our meal, we re-booked for a second sitting a few weeks later, this time with 12 in our party and at a later sitting time of 8pm. Again the staff were very hospitable, and the place was packed, all good testament to how good the food is. As it wasn't two for one, various bods were willing to try the steaks and specials available, again all with accompanying noises of approval. And as it was after work hours, there were indulgences into the cocktail pitchers available, and also the shooters for the more daring. The alcohol is a bit steep in price at £15.95 a pitcher, but apparently the taste warranted it. Gringos has a great atmosphere, one of those places where you feel you could spend all night and have fun in a casual environment. Beware of elbow room, so popular is the place that there isn't a lot of room for manoeuvring oneself. I say get booked and eaten for 8pm and enjoy a full belly at a great price.
