LRC is owner-run, and that owner has been at LRC for many years. Her staff is warm, engaged, creative and patient. There is admittedly turnover, but when that does happen, they manage to maintain consistency for the children and find new staff that fit the strong mold described above. LRC is very thoughtful about its program, keeping it fresh, interesting and age appropriate. They bring in outside educators as well, including movement and dance, music, librarians and, for the older children, "Mad Science." There are themed parties, a cute preschool graduation, and more. It's a happy, vibrant community I feel lucky to have been a part of.

I signed my son up for Camp Heartwood for 3 weeks this summer. My son has ADHD and I reported this…read morein the registration forms. During the first 2 weeks of the camp my son received behavior reports and I informed the camp once more that he has ADHD and is medicated and attempted to teach them how to handle a child like him. The leader of the camp, Brenda, would complain almost daily about my son and stated they did not offer the services to deal with a child like my son. They made no accommodations to hep my son and only complained out him and suggested during the second week that he take a break and was able to return later in the week. I agreed. They were aware that he was signed up for another week of camp 3 weeks later and could have let me know at that time that Ryan should not return. It would have been disappointing but I wouldn't have been charged the $340 for the camp if they told me then. However, they did not do that and the first day of the third week they told me my son could not return and that their camp did not have accommodations or tools to deal with my son and if I wanted to register him next summer we would have to have a meeting. Brenda was extremely rude throughout this interaction and I emailed her and requested a refund and was told no since it was due to behavior. His behavior is due to a disability that I disclosed. I then asked for her supervisor and was told to contact Tyler. He backed up Brenda and told me I was not eligible for a refund. I reminded that this summer camps need to make an attempt to accommodate a child with disabilities before discharging them per the Maine Human Right Act and this was not done. All I wanted was a refund since they could have done this before I was charged. SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS - STAY FAR AWAY BECAUSE YOU WILL LOSE YOUR MONEY AND WATCH YOUR CHILD BE TARGETED BY STAFF BECAUSE THEY DONT FEEL LIKE DEALING WITH THEM.

They are located right night to heroin alley and you risk being assaulted using the parking lot of a ticket picking up your kids. You will only be treated fairly if they can bill the state for your the primary amount of your bill. Camilia Babson Hayley has helped run this establishment into the ground and personally had a dozen or more staff members leave due to her lack of leadership. They have also been investigated for abuse and neglect in the past and recently where they had to call on themselves. That's a sad state of affairs.

Youth & Family Outreach (YFO) is a wonderful day care. From our first day here I was comfortable…read morewith the staff and the leadership. Friends recommended YFO to us, so we put our infant on the waiting list, hoping to get in before our child was 2 -- the wait list can be long, and there are several factors that play into getting a spot (age, special needs, etc.). To our surprise we were off the waitlist after just a couple months - things aligned and there happen to be a couple openings in the infant room. We have gotten to know the director and staff in the infant and they are all wonderful, and most important, they treat our child with love, respect and care. YFO also has a great food program, partnering with several local farms and providers. They garden in the summer months, too. They can even provide formula, if it is what your child uses. Also - there is a 'therapy room' at YFO where children can receive services, if needed. We are excited to keep our kiddo at YFO through preschool - YFO has collaborated with the Portland Public School system to create the first community-based public pre-k classroom in the district. A wonderful option for kids, parents and our community. Leaving your child at day care can be hard - but it becomes a lot easier when you trust in the care completely! YFO is a glowing example of what child care should be like!
