I grew up in Tampa where it's argued the Cuban sandwich was invented. The Cuban I got at this food truck was as good as any I got in Tampa. If you've never had a Cuban this is a great place to fall in love ( with the sandwich). It's on the waterfront in New Haven in a sea of Mexican food trucks. Food Truck Paradise is a stretch of food trucks that have lined up daily in New Haven, Connecticut since 1960. Every day as many as 29 food trucks can be found along Long Wharf Drive: a majority of them serving some form of Latinx cuisine. The Sweeney's Hot Dog truck, owned by Bob Sweeney, is often credited as the first truck to begin parking along the stretch all those many years ago... and it's still showing up today. By 2017, the stretch of road was becoming crowded with too many trucks. The city set up a special vending program as well as a lottery for licenses. Power hookups were also built along the street in order to eliminate the need for noisy generators. Each vendor pays $3,000 a year for a reserved spot and electricity. Plans are underway to build a permanent waterfront promenade on Long Wharf with benches, a bathroom facility, and picnic tables for customers. In addition to Long Wharf, New Haven also has additional designated food cart districts along Cedar Street (in front of the Yale School of Medicine), Sachem Street (in front of Ingalls Rink), and a downtown zone by the New Haven Green. My family and I visited Food Truck Paradise this past August. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've lived in New Haven all my life and this was my first visit to the stretch of food trucks. For as long as I can remember, there have always been food trucks parked here... since way before food trucks became the 'gourmet restaurants-on-wheels' as we know them today. I stopped at the 'Sandwiches El Cubano' truck and ordered their "Original Cuban Sandwich" (ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mayo, mustard, Italian bread). My wife and son stopped at the 'Ixtapa' truck and ordered their "Chicken Tacos" as well as their "Nachos" platter. We also grabbed a couple of Mexican sodas and had a picnic lunch across the street by the water. Everything was so delicious and authentic! This may have been our first trip to Food Truck Paradise but it certainly won't be our last! read more

Every time I drive on the I95, I always see a line of food trucks and cars parked along the water. I knew I wanted to stop by and check it out one day. I ordered the Pernil sandwich. I guess thinking back it was silly to order a Pernil sandwich when it's a Cubano sandwich food truck. Anyways at the time, I wanted to try it. Really delicious Cuban sandwich - finally hit up the New Haven Food Truck! We have driven pass this spot a few times whenever on the I95... and was always curious to know if the food trucks are worth the detour. We finally made it here and boy were we glad to grabbed these yummy crispy cubanos! We got one regular and one w/o pickles for my kids. The pork was moist & tender and that melted cheese was so freaking good. It's a bit steep... $10 a sandwich, but worth it. The wait is a bit crazy... took a good 15 mins for 2 sandwiches. I've been planning for a while to stop along 1-95 in New Haven where a couple dozen food trucks serve passersby. Most of the trucks offer Mexican or other Latino fare. Among them, Sandwiches El Cubano is a standout. I love the energy of the order taker / server and the colorful truck from which this delicious food comes. I had the Cuban Sandwich and it was good. But to be objective and fair however, I thought the proportions were wrong: too much pork and not enough ham and Swiss and almost a lack of pickles on mine. There was a handful of trunks left - with patrons waiting for food. Yeah, the area looks a bit shady at night but there was also an unmarked popo sitting on the road. Anyways, we wanted Cubanos to-go but ended up also getting tacos here. The Cubanos are $10; and, tacos are $1.50 each. (I noticed there are no lengua tacos here.) Noticed a previous reviewer pointed out the two pickles. Ok, so we didn't get much pickles either (maybe 4 total?) but the sandwich is chockablock of carnitas which makes it totally worth the $. Since I did take out, I was able to add more pickles and mustard at home. The tacos are delicious as well. None of the protein was dry. It came topped with onions and cilantro; and, some side garnish of radishes and one lime. Simple tacos. Don't expect cheese and the sour cream. It's hard to eat Cuban sandwiches after living in Miami for over a decade. And even there, it's hard to find a good version of this classic dish. At least in Miami, the bread is always right. Part of me thinks it's unreasonable to expect anybody in New Haven to be able to source legit Cuban bread with its light thin crust, and totally compressible crumb. But if any place would have it, my hope was that it would be a food truck that specializes in the dish. So the bread isn't right, and that's a pity. SEC falls down where so many other attempts at the Cuban sandwich also fail, and that's the balance of ingredients. Getting roast pork, ham, pickles, cheese, and mustard to each contribute equally to the overall flavor of a sandwich is tricky. Ideally, you should taste all of them, and there shouldn't be one flavor that dominates. That was not the case here. Still, it's a tasty sandwich. As requested, ours was cut into four pieces, for easy sharing. While and $8 sandwich seems a bit steep, each piece comes to $2. And that compares favorably to the $1.50 tacos easily found up and down this stretch of food trucks. So three stars. It's a tasty add on to your exploration of the New Haven food truck scene, but it's not worth a special trip, nor should eating it be a priority when confronted with all the options within arms reach. read more

The pickle game was PROPER, the crispiness of the sandwich with butter notes adding a nice touch of flavor. Just wow is all I can say. I'd been wanting to try the Long Wharf Food Trucks for sometime. After watching the movie Chef, where the Cuban Sandwich truck was center stage I knew that this had to be my first stop. We went there yesterday at about 11AM. It was cold and rainy and a bit before lunch so there were only a few customers at this truck. My wife went to place the order and the man at the window told her to wait in the car and he would wave to her when it was ready. He was as good as his word and in a couple of minutes he waved her over. The sandwich was just terrific, with lots of filing, the shredded pork was plentiful and hot. Others have remarked about the bread but we thought it was just wonderful. The pickles were perfect too. BTW, we both have big appetites and splitting one between us was plenty! read more

This place usually has the best Cubano sandwiches around. When I stopped by last Thursday to buy a couple of them, the line of customers was longer than usual. I was happy to wait, and the line moved fairly fast. The sandwich was a disappoinment. The ingredients were of lower quality, especially the carnitas which was fatty and not as tasty as usual. We were driving to NY one weekend and saw all of these food trucks in front of Ikea sadly on our way back at about midnight they were all gone. So the next weekend we went back and there they were. After observation we noticed all these trucks pretty much served the same food, Mexican, tacos, burritos, tostadas and low and behold a Cuban sandwich. Now briefly I will tell you that we tried to make Cuban sandwich's at home a few weeks before but because of me, yes I admit it was my fault, they didn't come out right. This was due to me buying the wrong bread the wrong the wrong ham and forgetting the pork. Needless to say it was an Epic fail. So when we saw this truck that had the Cuban sandwich's just the way they are suppose to be made we were thrilled. These Cuban's were to die for. The perfect balance of meat and bread with pickles and mustard, it was like a orgasm in your mouth... can I say that? Anyways, This is definitely a keeper we will be going back again. They are losing a star because they only accept cash. I feel like this day in age and with all of the option to accept debit cards there is no reason I had to hunt down an ATM. Who hasnt see the Flag Man, selling flags from an old U-Haul on Long Warf, as they whiz by on I95 in New Haven. Well forget the flags, because there are a plethora of amazing Mexican and Puerto Rican food trucks that are probably some of the best examples of their cuisine you will find in the state. There is now a new truck on the scene, Sandwiches El Cubano. I saw it a few weeks ago and made it my business to go check it out. As soon as I pulled up and saw the mural on the truck of bikini clad women in front of a Cuban flag, I knew this was gonna be good. Not being an expert on Cuban food, I played it safe and took the owners suggestion to get the "Miami Style" cuban sandwich. Amazing. A foot long hot grilled sandwich of roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, mayonnaise, and mustard. Did I mention it was only $6.50? My Cuban friend Yve says that the bread isnt real authentic cuban bread but its ok because you just cant get it in New Haven. Ill have to trust her on this, I dont know what kind of bread it was, nor do I care because it was FANTASTIC. After trying to find the grilled cheese truck in new haven and coming up empty handed. Me and my sister remembered seeing all these Mexican food trucks near ikea and decided to give one of them a try. We looked at all the trucks and decided to go with this one. I got a torta with pork. It was delicious marinated pork topped with avocados and lettuce. It was delicious some of the best Mexican foodmive had in Connecticut. My sister got a quesadilla which she enjoyed too. After looking at my other reviews I noticed that the energy was negative so I decided to put some positivity out there. I love a really good Cuban sandwich so when I stumbled across this truck one day on my way to IKEA I decided to check it out. That was a couple of years ago and of all the trucks along along Long Warf now, this is still my go-to vendor. Their food is always fantastic! The only time I have ever been disappointed was when they ran out of bread and couldn't make a sandwich. I even offered to run to the store and pick up some potato bread myself! Then I went there for lunch the other day and guess what.....they started offering a Cuban style sandwich on potato bread! I didn't think they could get any better but it was delicious. I wasn't even mad about the little drop on my shirt from the juicy pork. Now my (10 year old, picky eater) son has been a couple of times and he loves their food. And they always smile as I make him (try to) order his chicken tacos in Spanish. Really happy to see these guys doing well.
