On a recent trip to Voyageurs NP we found the most amazing family-operated lodge. I called and was able to book a lodge room with only a few days notice (granted it was off season). Check in was easy...I love the old school honor system mentality. We kept our room and food on a tab and paid up when we checked out. The bar and grill had great food - we had pizza and burgers. Breakfast was delicious - definitely try the French toast. It felt like home! If you ever get a chance to visit, give Sandy Point a call.

Headed back to the lodge, the sunset is breathtaking!

Beautiful view of Lake Kabetogama and great food. My wife and I both had the walleye which was baked in olive oil. Cooked to prefection!

We took one of the Kettle Falls NPS tours during our time in Voyageurs. While checking in at the…read morevisitors center, one of the rangers started taking orders for box lunches, with a choice of either salad or sandwiches. This restaurant is located within the Kettle Falls Hotel with plenty of seating in the dining room and out on the patio. While the tour recommends preordering lunch to prevent the kitchen from getting overwhelmed, I believe there's more than enough time to place an order for other food if desired. We didn't know this going in, so we preordered the sandwich lunches. While preorders are done at the visitor center before setting off on the cruise, payments are done in person at the hotel. Deli Sands ($12.95) - This is a really simple sandwich that anyone can make. First a couple of slices of meat. One sandwich we went with turkey, the other beef. For the former, the sandwich came with 3 slices while the beef seemed to be piled much higher. There's then a choice of swiss or american cheese, served simply cold, and then lettuce, tomato, and mayo. It's nothing inventive; it's just a pure homestyle sandwich anyone can make to take out on a picnic or for school lunch as I had while growing up. There's enough mayo that it mixes with the liquid from the veggies to drip down and out - no dry bites in sight. The meal comes with a small bag of regular Lays chips and a pickle spear. The spear isn't drained well so the pickle juice kind of goes all over the box and soaks into the sandwich bread. (3/5) Honestly there's not much else to say, it's a sandwich from the only restaurant within probably 2 hours travel time of anything else. They obviously don't have the means or capacity to really make anything fancy - it's just for the campers, lodgers and visitors like us. Food: [3/5] Service: [ ] Other: [ ] Final Rating: 3/5

Everyone recommended we travel to Kettle Falls since it was our first time visiting Voyageurs…read moreNational Park. We're happy we did. It was neat to see the historic hotel and "Tiltin' Hilton" bar. We came during prime lunchtime and the restaurant was busy with just one waitress taking orders, running food, and managing the cash register. We weren't in a rush and knew she was working hard so we didn't mind the slower pace of service but some others near us seemed to be more pressed for time. Might just be something to consider if you're on a timed tour! The food menu is basic but what we got (a Philly Cheesesteak and chicken tenders and fries) were cooked to our liking. You're definitely here more for the experience than the food but we had a great time.

UPDATE - November 10, 2020:…read more We have stayed at VPL many times (5 years, total). Last time, we also brought along my brother and his wife. They stayed at Spruce Tree cabin; we were in Cattails. We've also stayed in Loggers. We've inspected many other cabins. All are nice. 1. Secluded: IMHO, VPL is one of "the most" secluded lodges in the Northwoods (and Southern Canada); it is *easily accessible* via drive-in. I've stayed at many; "visited" a few others; seen "many more" from the water. VPL truly does encompass the whole peninsula. To get anything more secluded, you have to shell out BIG bucks for a fly-in excursion (which I have done, many times). This is *the place*. 2. Hosts / Managers: Casey and Anna - "Top-tier". I've stayed in many lodges in both the USA and Canada - there are "top-tier" hosts, and then there are "the rest". Definitely, "top-tier". 3. Amenities: They are accurately listed on the web-site - check them out. Great boat-ramp; playground; boat-house / fish-cleaning / live-bait / fuel; excellent docks for each cabin (or community docks for the "view" cabins); etc, etc... 4. Kitchen: it's small, but perfect for a week-long stay. Even though there are plenty of restaurants within easy driving distance, we ONLY eat-in during our stay. We use the kitchen and the grill (provided by VPL at each cabin) - it's fish-camp! Awesome. 5. Cabins - Part 1: Traditional, but very comfortable. Rustic - but, cozy. Some are very close to the water - with individual docks; some are "view cabins" - located high-up (you can't walk straight down to the water - need to use the community dock). We prefer the "water-side" cabins - everything is close at hand. Also, brother's family has stayed at one of the "view" cabins: truly stunning views - facing across the bay (to uninhabited Echo Island). And these "view" cabins have AWESOME fire-pits & benches for tremendous evenings. All the cabins DO have everything you need for a week-long stay. 6. Cabins - Part 2: There is a selection of both Single-room and Multi-room cabins. All have *new* mattresses: Single, Double, and King - depending on the specific cabin. No locks on the doors? It's fish-camp! Don't bring your heirloom jewelry; if you do, lock it in your car-trunk. 7. Firewood: Obviously. 8. No TV: Hooray! There are video players in each cabin - and videos at the office. Seriously? Who goes to fish-camp in the Northwoods to watch videos? Not... 9. Lake Kabetogama: If you've never been here, this lake is an AWESOME place to spend a week. Even if you don't stay at VPL, this is one place which should be on everyone's bucket-list.

The cabins are small, but private. From most of the cabins you can see no other cabins or one other cabin. There is a small beach and a playground where our kids play. It's not a luxury resort, nor is it advertised as such, but my family has a great time when we are there.
