My 15-year-old (now 16 year old) son has a pretty extreme case of ADHD. Last summer we stopped his meds to  have a brain map done, with the intention of doing Neurofeedback with Dr Sanford Silverman. Numerous practitioners now offer now Nerofeedback. HOWEVER Dr. Silverman is a psychologist who specializes in ADD and ADHD, who uses neurofeedback brain mapping and other technologies to help remap the ADHD brain.  Prior to using these technologies he was already a doctor of psychology who understands and studied THE BRAIN. I believe he used to work in the school system as a psychologist with teenagers prior to opening this practice. At first we had his brain map and from the map the doctor can tell exactly what the behavioral characteristics were of my child (impulsive behavior)That gave me confidence. Then we started him Nerofeedback, a metronome, and one other technology for the back of the brain. In all of the reviews we read online on yelp, they said that you have to wait at least 10 sessions before you will see a difference. We saw a difference right away! And it continued to get better and better. It was unbelievable to us! He was doing so well that we signed up for a second set of 20 sessions. This time the doctor said that we probably didn't need the metronome on the back of the brain therapy's so we just did the Nuro feedback.  Immediately almost our son regressed. We were so discouraged! The doctor, Dr. Sanford Silverman, in Scottsdale Arizona, was extremely motivated to find what would help our son. He tried a couple of different things and we eventually went back to putting the other technologies back in.  Again, amazing results! My son is just about to finish up his 60th session. He has been off of medication since last May. We have had ZERO behavior problems (this has never happened in all of his years of education) at school and he has not been on medication the entire school year.  It is nothing short of a miracle! If we had just gone to a regular Practitioner who does Nuro feedback we would've paid all that money and since they would lack the expertise of understanding the brain and the other technologies that showed such a great improvement in our son we would've walked away feeling like we had again spent a lot of money on something that didn't work at all. He said that our son was a tough case.   Over the Christmas break our son did not have any Nuro feedback sessions and was still doing great so we finished up his sessions moving his visits for down from two visits a week to just once per week. He continue to sustain the same benefits taking off a couple of weeks and then resuming it only one session Per week. After a few weeks however we noticed that he was regressing again. We don't have him back on his fourth set of 20 sessions and again we are seeing great results. Nero feedback is said to be a permanent change in the brain. Every person is different and I know that our son is an intense case. I'm not sure how long it will take for these results to stick but for now they are replacing medication which is a miracle! We have confidence that eventually the changes being made in his brain will stick permanently. This has been absolutely life-changing for us! Not only for son but for our whole family.     I have told a few other families about our experience. Two of them have also gone to Dr Silverman and have seen similar results as we have. I think I should add that when you come across people as brilliant as Dr. Silverman sometimes there are some quirks. I would not recommend this service nor Dr. Silverman. My son had been having focus issues at school and I was looking for a alternative way to help him instead of medicating. I was hopeful this was the answer. From day one, I felt pressured to purchase a full package, which was very costly. I started with a small package and Dr. Silverman was adamant that 20 visits would be needed. So I stuck it out and purchased more visits. The visits consisted of Dr. Silverman rushing my child to a back room, hooking him up to a machine and then bouncing back and forth between other patients. He does not do any checking in with you or the child, no, how's it going etc? Every appointment I felt rushed, to the point he would be annoyed if I asked any questions or wanted to discuss observations or how he was doing in school. Dr. Silverman doesn't actually care, he only cares about $$$. After spending thousands of dollars, and many visits later, my son is actually worse off. No improvement in his ability to focus and he's having behavioral issues at school and home. Worst of all, since this series of treatments my son has been dipping into depression, stone cold, expressionless depression where he can't move. He has also attempted self harm and has told me he has been hearing voices and he just doesn't see the point of life anymore. My son was NEVER depressed nor suicidal before this treatment! What made me not return was on the last visit, Dr. Silverman literally yelled at my son and told him he was 'doing it wrong'. First of all, a little personal background: I am a 31 year-old professional in the financial industry who was diagnosed with ADD in third grade. I was prescribed various meds throughout my adolescence and they all made me feel like a zombie with no appetite. (The best kind of zombie, I suppose. But I digress.) As an adult, I had resigned myself to a life of scatterbrained-ness and frustrated romantic partners and coworkers as a result of the ADD behaviors. *Enter neurofeedback and Dr. Silverman* According to various studies (actually reading the studies on PubMed and not just the articles about the studies) neurofeedback has the efficacy rate of meds with none of the nasty side-effects and life-long amphetamine dependency (Big Pharma is a sham). I went into treatment knowing that there was a possibility it wouldn't work for me. To my surprise and delight, it worked wonders. I can think more clearly, organize thoughts and regulate emotions better than I ever have. As for Dr. Silverman himself. He was very flexible with my work schedule, which was amazing. I work 9-6 and we were still able to come up with a schedule that worked for both of us. I appreciated that he cared enough to work with me although I'm sure my schedule was not convenient for him personally. He is friendly, though I wouldn't expect any fluff from him. He is good at what he does and that's what is important. He is very direct and while some people may not be used to that approach, I appreciated that he didn't sugarcoat anything for me. I felt that he was very transparent about the treatment and the cost. My sessions were relatively short. Dr. Silverman would ask how I felt before each session and after to gauge the effects of the treatment. He would hook me up, let the treatment do its work, and then get me on with my day. He would modify the treatment depending on my reaction to the previous one, as sometimes we would try things that would over-stimulate parts of my brain. It's a science and everyone's brain is different so I expected there would be some fine-tuning along the way. Anyway, if you made it this far I applaud you. Thank Dr. Silverman for the treatment which helped me focus long enough to sit down and write this all out ;) I believe in neurofeedback and what Dr. Silverman does (and the peer-reviewed studies that show its efficacy). Dr. Silverman claims a specialty with ADD/ADHD and uses what is called Neurofeedback to train the brain and treat the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. A single visit costs $120.00 and he recommends a minimum of 20-30 visits (45 mins) to see significant results and then there is the maintenance visits which could vary depending upon the individual. I opted for the pay-as-you-go visits as I didn't want to commit to something that I wasn't sure was going to work. My research into this modality dictated that it was still considered experimental and inconclusive albeit I did find some information on it's success so I made the choice for my 16 yr old son to give it a try. I was immediately alerted to Dr Silverman's 'salesmen' approached after the first visit. I felt pressured by him to sign up for the package deal. He stated that 'I know for a fact that he will need the 20-30 visits, probably more'. I wanted to see what this modality was all about so I refused to commit. 4 out of the 12 or so visits he pressured me to sign up for the package deal. It was annoying and inappropriate but I 'stuck' with it. After the initial consult there was never any real time spent talking with me or my son. He would ask how he was, hook him up and leave. There was up to 3 patients he would have hooked up in different rooms and he would dart back and forth, to the point where my son complained that the intrusions would interrupt his focus. Ironic. There is no secretary so there are phones in every room so Dr Silverman could answer no matter which room he was darting to and fro from. Not to mention, the patient who is supposed to be focusing on the game has to be interrupted by a ringing phone! Half of the time the equipment used would not work and he would spend up to 10 mins fiddling with wires and such and the time spent fixing was never 'made up'. My son said that the games frequently would 'freeze' and he had to wait for the game to work. 120/visit. I felt like I couldn't ask questions and had to be assertive to capture his attention. I even said that I would make a separate appointment to talk to him about my son's issues (like he said that I had the option to do if I felt the need) but it never happened. He kept pushing it off by saying 'well, let's see how the next treatment goes'. I was left feeling like that's all he wants to do is to hook people up to the machines and let the programs do the work. Maybe that would work for some but, I had deeper issues to discuss with him, he said he could help with that but never followed through. He was really good at diverting. Also, when it came to making appointments he recommended twice a week and they were made between him darting from room to room and answering phones. I actually asked why he didn't have a secretary and he said he didn't need one. My gut instincts wouldn't quiet down for me. They kept telling me to leave but since I was told that it could take some time so I stuck it out for about 12 visits. I did notice improvement with my son's ability to organize and plan but my lack of confidence in Dr. Silverman was too great and I chose to leave. The incident that occurred which made me end it was when my son had a potential 'reaction' from the treatment. 10 hrs after treatment he called me from where he was pet sitting, sobbing and in panic mode about how he keeps hearing a voice in his head that was telling him that 'all of his problems will be solved if he would just kill himself'. My son is NOT and NEVER has been depressed or suicidal. I called Dr Silverman and he minimized the situation stating that it was probably to much work done on (forgot what part of brain he was working on) and that he'll just switch it up next visit. That's it. No explanation--nothing. Just switch. Needless to say I canceled the next visit and sadly the 'craziness' didn't end there. He called on the day the appointment was supposed to be FIVE times in a row! One from his main number and 4 from an unknown. I answered on the fifth time and had to remind him that I canceled and in his usual frustrated tone, he signed and tried to convince me to come in AGAIN and told me about the package deal. Ugh! I hung up on him. The kicker? Two months later I received a missed appt bill of 120.00. read more

I was very skeptical about trying this again, we had a TERRIBLE experience at another clinic and my son hated it!!!! He was very reluctant, as was I, to try again. I am glad we did. Dr. Silverman's business is the Center for Attention Deficit and Learning Disorders. 1. Story: My 3rd grader was severely struggling with ALL class work. Homework was forgotten at class or at home. Assignments not turned in; incomplete classwork and forgotten assignments every day. Bad grades. Could not continue music lessons because of the difficulty in focusing. Sports classes were a similar story; coaches/teachers saying that my child was not focusing. Constant misplacing, losing, or forgetting where things were (clothes, shoes, toys, etc). And the constant "all you need to do is focus" from everyone, including us, was beginning to take its toll on my child's psychological state of mind. Low confidence and anxiety were beginning to show their ugly face. After self-diagnosing for potentially having inattentive ADD, I searched for a professional licensed psychologist to test for the condition using Neurofeedback, as I had read that this alternative to medication has had positive results for those suffering from inattentiveness. I came across Dr. Silverman and decided to give it a try. 2. Treatment: I second the reviews from others. One reviewer mentioned how they felt pressured into buying a certain amount of sessions. I felt exactly the same way and was hesitant to follow through because after all, there is no guarantee you will see results, costs are out-of-pocket, and I just really don't like to be pressured that way. Classwork is getting completed in class (no more unfinished work brought home). Homework is completed before dinner. Moved up a level in gym class in a period of 6 weeks. There is a renewed interest in music. Level of confidence has increased dramatically. Most importantly, for everyone to understand that the lack of focus is not a result of laziness, as one teacher actually suggested prior, or unwillingness to do better, has allowed us to stop the negativity and focus on the positive. 4. Thoughts: I honestly believe that we don't need to medicate our kids and find the Neurofeedback treatments from Dr. Silverman as the answer to a permanent solution, not just a suppression of symptoms. I went here because I believed I was experiencing symptoms of ADHD. I am 18, and I felt symptoms throughout high school, and I hoped to finally diagnose what I was feeling. My mom found Dr. Silverman online and we decided to give him a chance. In our first meeting, Dr. Silverman asked questions about me and my symptoms, and suggested two treatment options. Dr. Silverman was very pressuring about his payment, rather than my treatment. However, we decided to go through with the Neurofeedback for a session. After receiving the results, all Dr. Silverman said is that I was experiencing ADHD symptoms, and refused to let us examine the results on our own. After being continually pressured to undergo further treatment, I had enough and left with my mom. My 10 yo son had major anger issues and was having a hard time adjusting in school. We approached Dr Silverman and did 30 sessions .For the first 15 sessions I did not see much change. After that my son started showing a lot of improvement, he was able to concentrate and was calmer and less angry. We completed our sessions more than 6 months ago and we still see the benefits. The sessions are expensive and not covered by insurance( for me at least) but worth it and definitely cheaper than the stimulant medication. The doctor sometimes is not very friendly and does not communicate too well in my opinion . Over time we got used to it and I think it's well worth the money as my son fares quite well without medication.
