Very professionally run but still relatively casual and fun. The venues for all three portions is awesome. The bike leg is longer than most other Tri's that I have done so it definitely benefits bikers, at least for the sprint. Great expo afterwards, lots of community support... I highly recommend this event!!

The Carpinteria Beach, known as the "World's Safest Beach," is very special and has been rated the #1 swimming beach in California, due mostly to its Southern exposure and its protection by the Channel Islands. Swimmers will usually enjoy small surf and the absence of riptides at our unique beach. The bike course, an open course and large loop, travels along the foothills offering some spectacular ocean views. Both the olympic and sprint courses offer the participant a challenging ride, although the sprint course is also very well suited for the novice triathlete. The run course, also an open course, winds through some quaint Carpinteria neighborhoods and is mostly a flat loop course. The Carpinteria Triathlon is a benefit event for the City's Parks & Recreation youth programs. Proceeds will help to provide scholarships and additional equipment for programs such as Junior Lifeguards and our ocean recreation programs. This event is USA Triathlon Sanctioned.

Which was awesome. He threw many things at the audience. Awesome race. Though, there was over 10,000 runners they raise a lot of money for children with cancers. Runners should have started first as they were a hazard in the dark. I question whether it was a 5K, my time was way too good. Only two black light powder stations and they were a mess of smell and dust. Parking lot needed attendants. The Hollywood Bowl lot is better and it is the worst ever, except for this. Water bottles a mistake, people left them littering everywhere and only one trash can. Hopefully no baseball games were scheduled for Sunday morning. The event organizers focus seemed to be on music.

First time running it, a few thoughts: - swag is…read moreridiculously sparse, but oh well - while they announce a "bucolic course in the hills of SLO", get prepared for 2/3rds of the course to be on the road with other cars passing by (people in the area love their trucks, it smells every time a car passes by). A decent 2-3 miles is on an access road by Highway 1, with the noise etc. People with sensitive lungs/avoiding to work out where there's car pollution should be aware of this - hydration stations 2, 3 and 4 ran out of cups. Runners were offered the option to lift the giant water bottles and drink out of it - super hygienic. C'mon people, paper cups are cheap, you know how many runners have signed up, and hydration is too important to be fuddled with!! - they "ran out of beer" when I arrived at the finish line (runners were still arriving for another 30-40 min after me). Another false claim in the confirmation email "enjoy a beer at the finish line", and again, it's not that hard to know how many runners there will be that day. I don't think I'll do this race again. The scenery is more appealing to me than city races, but it's really poorly organized. There are waaay better organized races in similar settings - including Mexico by the way (valle de guadalupe).

This is a point-to-point race that starts in downtown SLO and brings you through stretches of rural backroads, beautiful coastal roads with scenic ocean views. The course is relatively flat with a few gentle rolling hills starting at mile 5. There are numerous fuel and hydration stations and excellent course support throughout. The pace groups were very helpful (they run at 15 minute intervals) and really kept me on target with my finish time. Runners can enjoy live bands, wellness and nutritional information and a delicious full breakfast catered by Scotty's Bar & Grill (grubby breakfast burritos) at the finish. There is a convenient bag drop and pick up station and a shuttle service to bring you back to the start. The pre-race expo included a variety of top-name vendors, great specials (my Nike LunarGlide 4's and Mizuno Wave Precision's were 20% off) and featured a few of the latest brand new designs in running gear (liked the ear bud/sunglasses). The race packet included a very nice gender specific techincal fabric shirt, which I will get a lot more use out of than one of those big baggy unisex t-shirts. The registration fee is one of the lowest you'll find -- while most half-marathons are priced at $100 +, the City to Sea is very nicely offered at $65 - 75. If you haven't been to this race, I highly recommend adding this one to your race list. A 5K and a Kids Run are offered as well. There is something for everyone to enjoy at this beautiful event.

This is my second time running the Ventura half marathon, the course changed a bit to make it easier at the finished line. Now is mostly all down hill. Process of signing up is quick and easy. Super flat out-and-back course which was really nice but at the same time had some not-so-pristine moments (roadkill...stinky water treatment plant...stuff like that). THE MOST AMAZING post-race snack table ever! I mean seriously. Someone posted a picture of it, and it really deserves 6 stars. This race isn't getting 5 stars because: A) having to pay for parking (THANK YOU to the parking gate guy who worked with me when I couldn't pony up the full bill!) B) I had to pay extra to pick up my packet on the morning of. Not sure where the "VIP area" that was included in my $20 extra charge was supposed to be, but, either way I wasn't going to be able to drive from Lancaster to Ventura two days in a row to so the extra $20 was a necessary evil. C) The final mile was a mess. I'm chugging along trying to tell myself to just keep running, but the course at that point was on the beach path where people were just meandering. It was a struggle to stay in the game and keep focused while dodging strollers and random beachgoers. All in all, I might just have to do this race again next year!

It was a combination of straight road, trail and hill running. The CA Highway Patrols were guarding each road for traffic and safety. This was the best part. Awesome medal, shirt and goodie bag. Amazing friendly people and special shout out to the leader of the 2.30 pace for handing me salt pills when left leg cramp attacked me on Mile 11. My first Half...done!…read more And Ojai, it was beautiful! Just north of Los Angeles and east of Santa Barbara--blanketed with outstretched fields of yellow Mustard flowers and nestled within the valleys beneath the rugged Topatopa Mountains--lies this quaint, little Shangri-La of Ventura County. Beginning at Mira Monte Elementary School, the route hops onto Ojai's paved bike trail and slowly meanders southward, following alongside Highway 33 before banking westward onto Santa Ana Blvd. Continuing onto the bike lanes of Santa Ana Rd., the run (around mile 5) parallels Lake Casitas. If it hasn't already done so, about here, your daydreaming should be settling in comfortably. This relaxation of mind will last throughout the entire course as it loops among scene after breathtaking scene of rolling hills and shady trees, punctuated at times by tangerine groves and local vineyards along the way. Too soon--seemingly much too soon--your 13.1 approaches, and before you know it, you're crossing the finish line with a smile. This run was so well organized. Each and every traffic signal along the route was flashing red, the CHP and the Ojai sheriff's department covering each intersection and assisting runners along the bike paths. Even the roads throughout the countryside were monitored by enforcements: cars requiring passage were police-escorted as to ensure runners' safety. The volunteers were amazing as well. Honestly, it seemed like all of Ojai was here in support. Plus water, Gatorade, and Porta Potties were positioned at the all of the aid stations, each about 1.5 miles apart. This run just kept getting better. And then came the medals. I love the medals! My first Half...in beautiful Ojai...done! (My personal goal was to finish within three hours. I did it: 2:46:57!!!) =]

I returned in 2018 because it was now part of the Lexus LaceUp Running Series. Currently, the distances that they offer are 5k, 10k, and half marathon. I ran the half marathon. The race now starts and ends at the Pelican Cove Park just West of the Terranea Resort. *Parking* For parking, they have 3 locations: Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall, Salvation Army College, and Point Vicente Interpretive Center. Each of the locations are close enough to walk, but they'll have shuttles going around to pick-up and drop-off people. *Course* It was beautiful and just as hilly as I remembered it to be! Most of course was kept in the residential area about a stone's throw from the ocean just off of the main Palos Verdes Dr. Be sure to do your hill training or else be prepared to suffer! They even have a short steep section just after mile 10 that was a timed hill challenge. The fastest male and female will each win $500. Overall it was a well organized race. Although the race had a few quirks such as confusing separate starting lines, I liked the improvements that they've made with this race. The packet pick-up was quick and they had plenty of portapotties. Gear check was a bit chaotic as they were swamped with runners dropping off bags all at the same time. One of the bright spots with these Lexus LaceUp races was the post race food from the food trucks! That was some good quality food all included in your race registration!
