You know it's going to be a good day when you start out with churros & chocolate. In fact, we liked this place so much (and because not much else is open for food before 11 am), that we came here two days in a row for the churros. This place is in Parte Vieja / Old Town and looks pretty unassuming with the metal counter and the kitchen behind the counter. Order at the counter, and they'll call your number when it's ready. We got the churros & chocolate, and coffee the first day, and then just churros & chocolate the second day. The churros are crispy and fresh, and the cup of essentially melted chocolate is delicious and generous. It's basically the size of a coffee cup, just filled with melted chocolate and it's every chocoholic's dream. At first, I thought it would be way too much chocolate, but a few minutes later, it was disappearing quickly. I was eventually just eating the chocolate with a spoon and may have licked the cup if I wasn't in public. It would be a pity to leave Spain and not eat churros at least once! Come here at least once for your churros & chocolate fix - it's inexpensive, quick, delicious, and they open relatively early. They also have sandwiches and platters of food, but we only had churros. read more

Final meal out in San Sebastian--churros, why not? These are the traditional Spanish kind, quite unlike those hawked on NYC subway platforms. They're thinner and denser and coated with coarse sugar (you can order them without). We ordered a plate which came with the "hot chocolate" and a couple cafe con leches. The churros were filling and warming to have in the morning, and the chocolate thickens as it cools, so it's nice to take a gooey sip when the fried stuff runs out. Santa Lucia is old-timey and cute, right in the heart of old town. Nothing mind-blowing here, but you'll have a pleasant time eating some traditional food in a sweet little spot. read more

Husband and I stayed in San Sebastian for our "luna de miel" in October 2010 and I remembered that we got huge plates of jamón and churros at one point. I didn't remember where or much about it. But when we returned last month, I did a quick search for "breakfast" in San Sebastian and Santa Lucia was one of the first places that came up. When I saw the pictures of the interior I said HEY! That's the same place we ate at back in 2010! We had good memories of the churros there, so we promptly headed over. Sometimes places can disappoint when you return with memories and expectations - Santa Lucia totally held up against my expectations. It is not a fancy place, by any means. In some ways it feels like Spanish fast food. But it's tasty and fun and fast.It feels very cafeteria-like ( I mean, it IS a "churroteria"). The staff is friendly, the plates are piled with food and OMG THE CHURROS. The fries are nothing special, but I'm not there for the fries (and besides, you can totally dip those, too, into the chocolate.) The jamón is delicious (I'm not a big meat eater but I do eat this), the churros are wonderful, of course. I realized this is the place that inspired my hot chocolate making at home - my kid has only ever had this type of thick, pudding-like hot chocolate at home. You can dip your churros or you can just spoon the chocolate into your mouth. It's all good. This place is a classic. Go to San Sebastian and do the pinxto-crawl at night, then head over to Santa Lucia in the morning for your churro fix. At least once. read more

Incredible, thick drinking chocolate and salty/sweet churros - DELICIOUS!! It's very crowded but totally worth it. Make sure to snag a table and then have someone get in line or you may not find a seat. The cafe con lèche is just as delicious as the hot chocolate. The bathroom line is extremely long though. Santa Lucia is a place like none other in the middle of the Parte Viejo. I think of it as a hosteler's haven... a place to get very cheap eats and fill your belly with something simple. We returned after our last visit 10 years ago, and although Santa Lucia looked exactly the same, and the menu board was virtually identical, I think the quality has dropped a bit. Our sandwiches and burgers were slapped together and not cooked with the same care as before. But I had no complaints, it still tasted great for the price. This is my favorite stop for the best chocolate caliente and churros in Old Town, San Sebastián. This is a must stop and try place. It is so good that I came here almost every other day just to have a cup of thick chocolate caliente con churros! It's addictive if you have a sweet tooth. Prices are very affordable. read more
