Do you know that the Santa's is the largest park within a city's limits in the entire country? Most in LA don't even know the park exists let alone how large it is. As an avid mountain biker I use and love the Santa's about twice a week. My typical ride is 20+ miles with over 2000 ft of elevation gain. I start riding up Sullivan Canyon single track, 4.5 miles 1200 ft elevation gain, up to Sullivan fire road and go left. In about a quarter mile there will be a single track on your left it has steep climbs and descents and parallels and criss crosses the fire road all the way down to Camp Josepho. At this point go back up Sullivan fire road past Sullivan single track to the next fire road and go left go a couple hundred yards turn left and go past a yellow gate. Take this ridge line trail until you see a trail dropping off quickly to the left. BE CAREFUL, this trail is very tight and narrow, but oh so twisty and fun for those with good skills. The trail drops you off on another fire road go right, this the fire road that lead you to this trail, continue back up and retrace your steps to the Sullivan Canyon single track. This is the first trail you started off on drop in and enjoy this really fun rolly polly trail! Be on the look out for other trail users at this point and ride in control and be respectful of other users.
The fact that I can drive twenty minutes down Sunset and get into a wilderness like the Santa's still blows my mind six years later. There are some amazing views looking in every direction especially when the air is clear. I see white tail deer pretty much every ride and a couple weeks ago I saw a fawn and her baby of about one month old just chillin! Hawks are a common occurrence circling high in the air looking for pray and there is a current abundance of rabbits running around all over the place. You will be amazed how "mountainess" the whole area is and its "wild" feel. Have fun, enjoy, and say hello to fellow users, leave LaLa land behind you! Take a couple hours go to the Santa's clear your head, get some exercise and enjoy a little nature you will enjoy it, I promise. read more
