Last time we were here was 4 years ago. Everything is as great as it was back then. Great service, sushi (tastes good and works of art) and main courses. I had the soup special of Jambalaya and my wife and I split the steak and scallop hibachi. The scallops were perfectly cooked and plenty for both of us. Pro-Tip: sit at the sushi bar. I have to start with what a beautiful clean restroom. This is and then go on to tell you about the amazing service and if that didn't get you going then the food definitely will. My daughter had the cowboy burger and it was humongous. She couldn't even finish it all, but she enjoyed it and the waffle fries. I had one of the rolls as well as the wontons. Ordered a chicken bowl from the food court. They were nice enough to switch the rice for just veggies for me. I asked for very very little sauce or on the side and the girl just dumped so much sauce. After receiving several highly-positive recommendations to visit Sapphire, I swung by with family. For context, I'm a temporary Summer traveler to Minnesota. I live in San Diego, where asian cuisine is of abundance. Getting back to the point, Sapphire did not disappoint! I was fortunate enough to sit in by the bar with my aunt who knew the owner, Reyna, personally. And she was kind enough to sit us each down with a fresh squid appetizer. (Being vegetarian, I didn't have the pleasure of trying it so I can't comment much on the taste unfortunately). I also admired her knowledge of tuna fishing that I overheard in her conversation with another customer, and for showing us her newest shipment of trout and its brilliant quality. It is immediately obvious she cares a lot for her business and is dedicated to her work. Our servers were all very attentive and never kept us waiting. So our orders came out before we could think twice about it and they were FRESH. The dishes were hot, so you knew they were made and delivered to your table straight away. And the overall restaurant has pleasant decor, with new vocabulary definitions handwritten on wall whiteboards to inform you of sushi preparation methods and blue ceiling lights that compliment the Sapphire logo. (The word of the day was "Tataki"). Whenever I come back to Minnesota, Sapphire will always be a place I make a priority in visiting. 10/10 read more

The service is top notch. Michele the bar tender remembered our names?! That is unheard of ... we have been here several times now and the wait staff has been constantly accommodating and friendly, shout out to Lexi. The great thing is this place has quality Sushi but has a full menu for those non-sushi folk. Their wild rice soup is just like home and burgers are yummy. The server was amazing. The sushi was terrible, we ordered wontons and 3 rolls. Wontons were good. The sushi wasn't rolled tight enough (or cut thin enough) and my daughter almost choked. I'd leave the sushi making to the experts in Bemidji or Fargo (Minneapolis is preferred). Thought I was gonna have to do the Heimlich maneuver on a 16 year old. Cleanliness would likely trigger a health inspector visit. I heard the burgers are great though. read more

We really like Sapphire. It's a nice change from the ridiculously overpriced very Midwest bland bar and grill food all over Detroit lakes. This is the first time we've eaten there and left fairly dissatisfied. A couple different times now my wife has had fried rice with shrimp. The odd thing is that they leave the tails on. I just can't imagine why you would leave something inedible physically in a dish, not on the side or whatever but in it. Tonight I got a prime rib sandwich. The prime rib was not tender. The au jus to dip it in looked a clear tan color and the bread was very soft and doughy like underbaked and only slightly toasted. I would probably look into a few changes if I were them. All in all it's still a good place, but maybe losing some luster. read more

Highly disappointed in this place. We stopped by after reading all the positive reviews on Facebook and Google. And we were excited to try the first Sushi and Hibachi restaurant in our small town. We arrived just before 7 PM, on a Tuesday evening, rather hungry after a long run, and ready to polish off some good sushi. We settled on the Salmon wontons, Pork Belly Ramen and a Futomaki roll to get started. We figured we'd order more rolls if we were still hungry. Our friendly server told us that the sushi might be a little longer as there were few orders ahead of us. Strange. Within a few minutes the first bit of bad news: No salmon wontons. Are we OK with the tuna variety? Sure. The wontons arrived quickly. Very tasty and the Yum Yum sauce and the mango salsa made this dish even better. So far so good. The Ramen arrived next. The egg and the noodles were cooked to perfection. The bowl itself was too small and there was not enough broth. The pork belly did not seem like it was crisp as it should be. Server was nice enough to bring out some extra broth. Thirty minutes into our meal, there was no sign of the Futomaki roll. Server said there was 3 orders ahead of us, and it would be out shortly. 15 minutes later, our server appeared with a sheepish look on her face - the owner would like to offer us a complimentary seaweed salad as it was going to take a bit longer than anticipated. We turned down the salad, as we wanted to save room for the roll. Another fifteen minutes and we were told that it should not be much longer, and the delay was caused by the owner wanting the sole sushi chef to put together a few more orders before ours. An hour and 10 minutes later, our Futomaki roll appeared. And it was not impressive at all. Looked very poorly put together with minimal interest and effort by the chef. We expressed our thoughts on the food, paid our bill and left. We'll give this place another chance; and will return in the future to see if things have (hopefully) improved. But for now two stars: one for the friendly service and staff. One for the awesome tuna wontons and the accompaniments. read more

Very disappointed that the Sapphire now charges a 3.5% surcharge when a credit card is used. Doesn't an average $22 per person charge for a meal and a beverage produce enough of a profit margin? I have no desire to go back to this place. read more

Sapphire Sushi Bar and Grill has some of the best panko shrimp I've ever tasted! Those shrimp were juicy, sweet, and the panko batter was perfect! They were prepared with love and a true passion for seafood perfection. Definitely try them! Their sushi rolls are delicious too and they have these magic noodles offered as a side dish that are so amazingly good. They also offer a wide variety of side dishes with their main entrées, so there really is something for everyone to enjoy on their menu. This place has fun friendly staff members who helped me immediately, which amazed me, because it was full of happy customers. They also have a bar, so any wait time can be enjoyed with a refreshing cocktail or similar beverage of your choosing. A must try for anyone lucky enough to meander through the Detroit Lakes Minnesota area! read more

Really wanted to like it but was sorely disappointed in my first visit there (late Sept 2022). I was the only one in my party who opted for sushi. Have had many different types at many different restaurants and this was by far the least satisfying. Ordered the sapphire roll. Figured I can't go wrong w that since it's the one roll named for the restaurant. All I can say is it was really underwhelming. Others in my party had the fried shrimp- one had panko crusted and the other had the tempura. I believe it was the panko crusted that was butterflied and looked like regular shrimp but the tempura looked like a shrimp stick w half a tail. Was really unappetizing. When both asked for extra onion for their salad but we're told they only had the onion used for stir fry (??). They said that was fine and after nearly 20 minutes the waitress showed up w chopped scallions. One had already finished his salad before they made it to the table. The other diner w us had the stir fry and chose shrimp as her meat. I've never seen such a pale plate of food. Strange to me that it came w noodles (spaghetti) as well as rice (white or fried). And there in the stir fry were white onion slices. It's obvious the veggies they use are frozen which is why the others didn't get what they'd requested for salads. Don't know that I'll be back. Service was ok, waitress was new but friendly. read more

This place fires on all cylinders. Broasted Chicken is unreal. Sushi is always good. Burgers are likely the best in the county. Like any restaurant, it can have its off days. However, Sapphire has the most unique menu within 60 miles and everything they offer is delicious. I highly recommend. read more

The ambiance of this establishment was 10/10 very clean and open, music was of family friendly quality and not too loud. Wait staff was extremely nice and patient. Dealt with 3 different waitresses while dining and they were all very nice and professional. The food was extremely good. I got the spring rolls, spicy tuna roll, and California roll. My buddy got the brisket sandwich and Mac and cheese. He said it was also very good. Everything was plated nicely and neat. Overall waitstaff gets a 10/10, food 9/10, and atmosphere/location gets a 9.5/10. Will definitely be coming back next time I am in DL! read more

We decided to give Sapphire a try during our visit to DL. We had the Shrimp Ramen and the Chirashi. The salad that came with the Chirashi was very tasty and was really presented well. The Shrimp Ramen was very good as was the Chirashi. We requested some Ghost pepper sauce and that did add a good 'kick' to both dishes without being crazy hot. Looking forward to another visit when we will try some rolls and sashimi. read more

In Detroit Lakes it is hard to find a restaurant that serve's good food with good service. Sapphire has given us that option.

We were excited to try sushi close to home. Got seated quickly despite it being busy which seemed promising. We ordered an appetizer (crab cakes) and miso soup. When the crab cakes arrived we were less than impressed. They were the consistency of wet dog food and tasted like spoiled fish. The miso was the equivalent to chicken broth, no tofu, no kombu, no scallions. For the main dish my daughter and husband ordered hibachi and I order nigiri salmon and a roll. Not only did it take an absurd amount of time to get our food, it was an extreme disappointment. The rice and noodles on the hibachi tasted rancid the nigiri was warm and the rice was like paste. When we politely confronted our very polite server about the state of our meal she got her manager, the manager met us at our table and was extremely rude and defensive when we tried to explain our situation. Bottom line save your money and go somewhere else if you're craving sushi this place will leave both your wallet and your stomach hungry. read more
