IF I could give this place six stars, I would. This is what I'm talking about! Cornfield Cafe, the little diner inside a hardware store. Dunvilla, Minnesota. Where else can you get a big, fat, juicy omelet AND a spool of barbed wire? Right here, people. This is the real deal. I just sneaked this one in as fall was coming to a close. A friend of mine recommended it and we decided to check it out. Unbelievable drive through lakes area. We rolled up just as the sun was coming up. The doors weren't open, yet, but a kindly gentleman escorted us in through the laundromat (yeah, they have one of those, too!). Come to discover that the laundromat must be a popular way for the locals to get in and get coffee before the lights turn on. A bunch of ol' boys were shooting the breeze in the dark. But, I'm not here to go on like Garrison Keillor. Save that noise for AM radio. This is Yelp and I'm here to give you the heads up on this great little place. First impressions are important, and I have to say that I was impressed... VERY impressed, by the waitress. She was probably in her late 50's, early 60's, maybe. She presented herself very, very well. This is a woman who knows what time it is, and when it is time, it's time for business. She was as sharp as Army ASUs, and you could have set a watch by her work pace. When you see something like that, you know it's going to be a great experience. It's breakfast. So, we get the usual stuff. Some wheat, some birds, and some pigs. Cornfield has a couple menu items that let you fly around the farm. So, that's what I did. All great stuff! You can't go wrong, unless you have one of those vegan philosophies. It ain't going to mesh with your melon to go somewhere like this, if that's the case. A lot of rooster diners make so so coffee. These guys pour it smooth and sweet. No need to doll it up, just toss in an ice cube and blast that bean juice right into the arteries. Don't waste any more time, people. Your typical small town country diner, but with a twist: it's located inside an outdoors/sporting goods store. This made waiting for our table a lot more entertaining! We were in pelican rapids for a friends-weekend-away type trip, and all ten of us came into town for breakfast at Cornfield Cafe. They served typical breakfast favorites and very reasonable prices. I got the country Benedict (ie eggs Benedict but with country gravy instead of hollandais sauce), and split a side of hash browns with a friend. Would recommend! It's a nice take on a quintessential breakfast dish. The hash browns were good too, and the portion is definitely enough to split. The server was great and our food came out pretty fast considering we had 10 people at our table. read more

If you don't mind making the detour off of 94, this amazing diner near Pelican Falls, MN is an absolute gem! In the unlikely location inside a TruValue hardware store, the cafe offers a wonderful variety of daily specials and regular menu items (walleye sandwich or walleye dinner, for example). The frosting on the cake, so to speak, is the plethora of pie offerings, all homemade by an unnamed local lady who will never be allowed to quit her job! The pie alone is worth a stop. If you order ahead, you can take home a whole pie! The service is of course exceptional. We arrived with two dead phones because our rental car charging port didn't work, and they promptly hooked us up to electric outlets while we waited. What's not to like? read more

I've only been here for breakfast, but let me say, it is fabulous. The eggs are always cooked perfectly, which is rare. (I ask for over-medium, and my sister asks for halfway between over-easy and over-medium.) The hash browns are perfectly crispy. They offer homemade oatmeal, which is quite tasty, and the biscuits and gravy are excellent (according to my husband). Let me also say that this is in a hardware store, which is pretty crazy. Exceptionally clean restaurant. Many restaurants have knick-knacks covered in years of dust. It makes you wonder how clean the kitchen is. The Cornfield Cafe is clean as a whistle. Our server, who my Mom told me is the owner, recommend the Cordon Bleu Sandwich and French Onion Soup special. The sandwich wasn't over-cheesed or over-sauced. The chicken was tender, moist, and flavorful. The soup was very good, not too salty. We got the Pecan Cream Cheese pie to go, which Corky, my Mom, says is superb. read more

This is the local cafe that you wish was near, but it is out in lakes country. It is good enough to be a destination. They make their meals from scratch, including their wonderful soups and pie. You won't go wrong with the daily specials. Speaking of pie - they always have great fruit pie, but they rotate daily the kind of cream pies. Great cafe with homemade food and pies! Super friendly service too. We have driven out here for lunch every time we're visiting family in DL. Last week there were 5 of us and we had the tomato dumpling soup, turkey sand, bacon & egg sand, and broasted chicken. We were surprised by the place. It looks like you would be eating in a hardware store. But it had its own niche and very clean. An actual small town café with real simple home cooked meals by the owner and her very capable staff. Its not everyday you are waited on by the owner. All the food was great from the breakfast meal to the dinner. The ribs we had were spectacular! The owner pointed out a sign that she has over a doorway--"Come as a stranger and leave as a friend". Went here twice for breakfast on my last visit to the lake. Nothing extraordinary here, just a real cafe about as far from a corporate Perkins as you can get. Good basic diner staples and well prepared breakfast dishes. The 'Favorite' breakfast (2 eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast) was spot on and came with a friendly server. I had the pancakes the next day and they were not very good - over-cooked and hard on one side - seems like they may have been microwaved. That said, I will give the place the benefit of the doubt based on the authenticity of the place and on the other breakfast I ordered. Save some time to explore the attached hardware store. True midwest Americana is a cafe inside a hardware store. I went on a Friday night when they had their steak special. It was a darn good sirloin steak, cooked just as I had requested. The salad to start off the meal looked like a basic iceberg, but the diced tomatoes and green pepper in it made it surprisingly good, and the homemade french dressing struck me as really tasty. The waitress was exceptionally good humored with just the right amount of attentiveness to my needs. The restaurant got busy as I was eating, and she seemed to know almost everyone personally. This cafe is the opposite of fancy, but I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. This was my first visit to the area and the cafe, but I wouldn't hesitate to return. read more
