I arrived roughly 15 minutes ahead of my appointment and scored a parking spot right out front. Sammy was with another client so I had a short wait while she finished up and reset her station. After a quick chat to establish a game plan, I was off to the wash and back in the chair for what felt like the quickest haircut of my life. I swear it was about 30 minutes from chat to checkout! I really appreciated that she styled my hair how I'd be styling it at home so I was able to get a good sense of the cut before I left the salon. Again with curly hair, this makes a world of difference! Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Moods. Whatever happened in previous Yelp reviews, that was nowhere to be found on my visit. Just as surgeons maybe shouldn't perform their own surgeries, I know when to let someone else cut my hair. 9am on a Thursday I walked in to Moods to a friendly sign asking me to put shoe coverings on (and mask up of course!). I liked this a lot. COVID has butchered the salon industry, so anything that a salon can do to up the sanitization game is huge. Moods Salon was spotless. Then I met Amber. Stylist roulette handed me a beautiful, friendly and enthusiastic ray of sunshine. (No really... you cannot ignore it.). From just a haircut perspective: once I stopped talking about "my hair" (we ALL do it..) she chimed in that she had originally attended barber school and was just shy of finishing when she transferred to cosmetology school to finish up. Oh Universe! Her skill showed this truth. I sit here writing this with the best grown out haircut I've ever had. I had my hair touched up with a single color and trimmed as I am growing out a shorter bob. The hair turned out a little more red than I hoped, but knowing red often fades quickly, I went on my family vacation thinking it would be more auburn/brown when I got home. Over the next two weeks, the red in my hair did fade, but I had hot roots, so my new growth that was colored over was almost orange. The day after I returned, I sent a picture of my roots explaining the situation. At first I was told it would be $100 to fix (they do have a 7 day guarantee, and yes, I had been away for 2 weeks). When double checking, stating it was only my roots, they said they would be able to do it for $50. I understand color is expensive (as is time, overhead, etc.), but after paying the initial cost for a cut/color (way more than I expected for Iowa...definitely what I paid in LA/Nashville), I just couldn't justify it. I went to Walgreens and bought Clariol Root Touch Up (I have not touched a box of home hair color in 15 years) and used it at home and it totally toned out the hot roots and blended it perfectly with the rest of my dark auburn hair. Total cost: $9 and about 15 minutes of my time. I have received tons of compliments on my cut-it really works well with my wavy hair as it grows out, so I am debating whether or not to return. You do get what you pay for, and I am completely for supporting local businesses and young entrepreneurs. However, I do have a slightly bad taste in my mouth in regard to the cost for the area for basic hair services. I guess time will tell.
