My hair type is naturally blonde, thin, wavy and coarse. I like to wear it longer as I feel I am "hiding" in it. I have always been very self conscious of my hair. I have also not been a very good owner of my hair with use of box dyes and (I can't believe I'm publicly admitting this) SunIn (yes, even as recently as the summer of 2020...I'm almost 40 here people...). Carrie was highly recommended to me from several friends and co-workers in and around the area. As long as I'm going all out in admitting my self inflicted hair disasters publicly to the world, I also suffer from chronic anxiety. One of my anxiety "tics" is picking. 90% of this picking tic occurs on my scalp. So now I'm also adding to more hair distress with my medical condition as well as my self destructive hair behavior. I'm really a fun person, I promise. Since the first moment that I sat down in Carrie's chair, she never made me feel embarrassed or self conscious about my hair, my scalp or even how I viewed myself in her mirror after getting my hair washed and comparing myself to Golam from Lord of the Rings. Since going to Carrie, my hair AND scalp have become intensely healthier and happier (minus my SunIn self disaster, which is important to know for this review.) Carrie recommended the best type of professional hair care products for my hair type, my scalp type and what to avoid. She has become so close to my hair that she can tell when I have had a lot of anxiety in my life just by my scalp. I have even begun to openly start a conversation with "HEY!! No anxiety for the last six weeks! Look at my scalp!" or "girl, watch out for the area around 10:48 and 4:23 on my head...let me tell you whats going on..." How AMAZING is it to have a hairstylist that HELPS you physically and mentally?! The SunIn fiasco...you guys remember that stuff from the early 90's? Well, I apparently remembered it and thought it was a good idea. Using this for a full day in the sun was not a good idea, nor did it bring the Sun In to my hair. In fact, this product fried the every loving crap out of my hair so badly I had to lose several inches of length to reach the healthier potions. Carrie knew that this would cause me to become anxious and prior to the inches coming off, we sat and talked about why it needed to be done and the process of getting my hair back to the healthy state that it was pre-self demise. What I'd like you take from my review are several things. I have openly admitted, publicly, for strangers to read for years to come about my chronic anxiety and the tic it comes with. This is embarrassing for me but I really want others who are coming here to read a review and make a decision about being styled be Carrie to know that she is naturally comforting, sincere and genuine. She has helped me get my hair back to the length I love, with hair that is so healthy and beautiful that I FEEL beautiful. I love the atmosphere of her salon, it isn't overpowering but rather comforting. The stylists who rent her chairs are amazing people as well. Listening to them talk to their clients, you can tell that they have been with them for years. Serendipity's Salon - Hair Salons Near Me - Marion, Iowa

I've been going to Serendipity's Salon for gosh, 15 years? I'm from Marion, but lived in New York, Chicago and now Des Moines. I still go to Serendipitys because, well, I couldn't afford to get my hair done in New York or Chicago ... from ANYONE, let alone someone as experienced and talented as Carrie. And here in Des Moines, if I were to find a stylist as experienced as Carrie, I'd still be paying more than what she charges! I have been getting extensions for years now. I've had the flat tips, the tape-ins and most recently, the hand tied extensions. Because I'm not local, I let the extensions grow out significantly before I get them redone (much to Carrie's chagrin!). My hair is extremely fine, very thin and limp. With the tips or the tape, the extensions couldn't hold on to anything and would fall out within 4-6 weeks. With the hand tied extensions, I'm on month 3 and I think I look just as good as I did when they were first put in! Carrie is new at extensions - I was her first client back in November! Here we are in February and my extensions are still in and my hair looks great! I even started a hand-tied extension trend at my office! A caveat to those who are thinking of getting extensions: You do have to take care of your hair. If you're wanting to yank a hair brush through, you can break your hair, and then, because the extensions are tied in, using beads as support for the hair, when you take them out, it will look like a lot of hair is coming with it. That is because the bead is holding in the hair that you yanked with your hairbrush! Especially with the hand tied extensions, you do need to gently brush through your hair. While Carrie is new to extensions, she is fully certified. While the hair is expensive and the service is expensive (its more labor on both sides! The hair is literally sewn into a line that is then sewn into your hair!), because the extensions last so much longer than the tips or tape, I'm actually getting more bang for my buck with the hand tied extensions! I only used about 1/3 of the hair that came in the pack I purchased! And...I can wear ponytails now! I can wear a bun! I've never been able to wear a bun, ever, and now I can create a thick, full, messy bun! I highly recommend hand tied extensions and Serendipitys Salon! (Protip: Its really hard to take a photo of your own bun! I did my best!:) ) read more
