    Easy part of the slot!

Perfect day for hiking. We hiked the Yellow trail down a sandy wash out through a short slot canyon where you slip slide ya booty down slick rocks (like on a playground sliding board) for a short distance. What fun! You must climb over a large boulder that fell from the cliff and is wedged in the crack. There are a few other short rock drops and one drop where you use a rope to lower yourself down, but not to far. You need a little strength and trust the rope will hold. Not hard. Be confident. Saw all ages of people do it, even a guy carried his weiner dog through it. Out the crack onto the wash once more. More mountains, grand colors and textures, all around. You feel like a pioneer crossing the prairie. After 2.5 miles approximately you reach a remote area of Lake Havasu - not many peeps there cuz you gotta move your limbs to get there. Work work work walk walk walk. We saw just 3 others. After resting and viewing the marvelous lake, part of the Colorado River, climb up onto the blue trail. Blue trail goes up onto the ridge above the wash back to the parking lot. Loose and hard packed decomposed granite make the walk mostly moderate with a few steep sections. If you are vigilant you may see a Bighorn Sheep on the cliff. The mountains in your view loom large, craggy, rugged and towering. On your hike you gain only 650 feet of elevation, max height 1000 feet. You can climb higher if you are feelin it! Got that adrenalin drive. Yellow and blue trails loop is about 5.5 miles. We did 6.5 miles with side routes for extra credit. More miles leaves room for more carbs like a cold frothy beer after a sunny hiking day with sweaty feet. Beer hits the spot at Jeremy's Juke Joint in Lake Havasu near London Bridge.

If you are coming from any part of the US, including Phoenix, the desert metropolis, there will be an adjustment period to Lake Havasu City's dryness. It is extraordinarily dry and lacking in vegetation. There are some unnatural looking palm trees on people's lawns and a few golf courses that are, I can only imagine, laboriously maintained to prevent the grass from drying. The area's dryness is heightened by the fact that the grand Colorado River flows through it. You can see the deep blue waters from most of the city but your feet are generally treading on Mars-like landscape that appears to have never sipped rain. Behind that backdrop of Lake Havasu City and the surrounding area is SARA Park. Someone smart decided to turn a large swath of public land near the city into a recreation dream. The extensive trail system of varying difficulty level is ideally suited for hiking and mountain biking. It was on those trails that I realized that deserts make the best mountain biking trails. There are no trees to remove; instead, the designer can cut the trail along the most fun routes with the best views. Among the many recreational opportunities available at SARA Park, I frequented the archery range as much as the hiking trails. Wednesdays and weekends before noon are open to the public. There's a normal range and a trail that has targets of varying ranges and heights. I regularly saw the same people at the range and they were all very friendly.

During the cooler months this place must get crazy busy when events take place. They have everything under the sun here but it was empty when I went in September and it was over 100 degrees, well I saw a few people. I came prepared with a hat, sunglasses, good shoes, and water.

Signage needs help. We hike through the crack and then up the hill and then down to the lake, bench and outhouse. Hiking through the crack was challenging and fun. The views at the lake were worth slogging through the wash. We then went back through the wash. Right at the crack we detoured to the blue trail up a very steep incline. At the top, the best view of the day all the way to the Island. The blue trail was nice and joined the orange trail after about 1.2 miles. Total hiking was 5.8 miles. We wanted to join the blue trail at the lake but with no signage were were unsure. Hiking make Lake Havasu City tolerable.

SARA (Special Activities & Recreational Area) Park is 1100 acre regional park in the Lake Havasu area. I am reviewing the hiking/mountain trails, including the MUST SEE SARA'S Crack (a slot canyon about 1.5 miles from the trailhead) but this area also has a dog park, BMX & mountain bike trails, ballfields, rodeo & fairgrounds area, radio control airplane field, shooting and archery range. The hiking there is rugged and marked but there is no water or any other comforts on the trails themselves (so be prepared-bring water, sunscreen/hat & good hiking shoes/boots). We took the yellow trail (dry river wash bottom) most of the way to the slot canyon. The hike to the canyon was worth it! We turned around just after the slot canyon, but you can go further-towards the lake. We took another trail back to the trailhead and had a completely different experience of the desert/foothills area. It's worth the drive out from LHC, just be sure to be prepared!
