A very very cool Bosnian restaurant. * * * It is a cool place despite a miserable location. It is jammed into a little sliver of land between one of the busiest highways in Southwest Berlin and the Main East-West Railway Line of Germany. It shares this space with a German Biergarten. The German Biergarten draws a huge crowd - never mind the screaming traffic on both sides. Sarajevo Inn is carefully designed to shelter its occupants from the roaring tumult outside. The garden spaces use artful walls or in some cases space to distance the transportation noise. We were inside, Inside we could have been anywhere. So we were enjoying life in a comfy Bosnian inn - Despite the fact that one hundred yards in one direction and three hundred yards in another direction, we could have been run over by the biggest trucks and trains in Germany. * * * The Sarajevo Inn has a fine collection of Balkan distilled spirits. I first came to adore strong spirits in Sarajevo itself when it was still part of Yugoslavia. (It was my honeymoon.) I was enjoying life with the love of my life and getting some brand new loves of my life. First I met slivovitz. Then I met other members of the slivovitz family. I left the country with three bottles of hard to get Yugoslavian distilled spirits - all of which were packaged in paper thin glass. None of them survived the curves and potholes of Croatia's mountain roads. The collection of goodies at the Sarajevo Inn brought all those happy memories back. (And I was with the same lovely lady who was with me for that first visit.) This time I was drinking Pelinkovac. Pelinokovac is a wormwood liqueur that tastes like the best Amaro in the world. After Pelinkovac, you will never be able to drink Pernod again. It is suave. It is baritone. It has a resonant licorice taste. The standard description of Pelinkovac is bittersweet. That standard description is fair and reasonable. If I could drink Pelinkovac at home, I would. * * * The menu at Sarajevo Inn is massive. So my one night can hardly capture the goodies that are available for the tasting here. I had what they call a Bosnian plate - which is a cold meat and vegetable platter. There are many things on that platter - but there are three clear stars of the show. a) The best bresaola you will ever eat - here known as "suho meso". b) The best ajvar you will ever eat. Everything I ate got dunked in ajvar. Everything that was dunked in ajvar was pure paradise. Okay the suho meso really didn't need the ajvar - but ajvar and bresaola really are a natural pairing. c) Bosnian feta which is far milder than Bulgarian or Greek feta. Mild does not mean uninteresting. It was rich and comforting ... and had its own distinctive angle. It went with ajvar like melted mozzarella cheese goes with tomato sauce. There was other stuff on the plate ... including the hottest pepperoncini known to humankind. Pretty much all of that was fodder for dumping in ajvar. * * * Dessert was a poached apple slathered in whipped cream and filled with brown sugar. It was May and I was eating a supermarket apple. The Balkans have lots of fresh local produce - and apples grow in Bosnia. I am sure that if I had that same dish in Autumn in Bosnia with a fresh local apple - it would have been to die for. The Pelinkovac kept me from complaining too loud. * * * The crowd is a mix of Germans and people from the Balkans. I never venture to guess where Balkan people come from. This is especially true in Bosnia where whether they are Serb, Croat or Moslem makes a difference. The neighborhood across the railroad tracks is Eastern European big money - with a wide variety of nations represented. The signs at the local park are in German, English and Ukranian. Many of the houses are mansions although apartments do exist. The single or double owner mansions have names from nearly every Eastern European language you can think of. I leave it as an unknown whether the Sarajevo Inn is narrowly Bosnian or has a pan-Balkan clientele. But they DO aspire to a wealthy clientele. The Porsche club of Berlin meets at the Sarajevo Inn. The restaurant has multiple pictures of happy owners showing off their Porsches in the Sarajevo Inn parking lot. The Sarajevo Inn also has lots of pictures of equestrians in formal dressage wear. Some of their customers own horses as well. Given the upscale nature of some of their customers, the prices at Sarajevo Inn are remarkably reasonable. Maybe for some of the regulars at Sarajevo Inn, the restaurant merely serves everyday food. For me, this was an absolute treat. I would be happy to eat at those tables over and over again. read more

This place is a gem. We were walking to the metro after visiting the abandoned station a mile away and were starving. I remembered walking by some cafe looking spots and wanted to find them again. This is what I ended up walking into and boy was it worth the visit. I knew it was going to be a ride when I walked in and heard them speaking Russian. The older gentleman working sat us in the corner where eventually the patrons who came in joined us. We decided to share an order of schnitzel. It said it was good for two so I decided against ordering my own. It came with a side salad and fries. The presentation was meh, but my goodness the food was amazing. We certainly cleared the plate. The two other parties by us ordered the same thing so it's clearly a popular dish. I kinda wish we got a full serving of the salad as it paired so perfectly with the schnitzel. The service was awesome. The man who helped us gave us a digestif on the house. I think he loved that we loved the food as evidenced by our clean plate. He came back with two shots when we asked for the bill. We had no clue what it was, but we shot it down because who turns down a shot? Not me. Not ever. Spasiba read more

We can not recommend the restaurant because of our bad experience. We have reserved a table on 25.12. and you can assume from that that the restaurant is not surprised when you then actually appear in the restaurant. The waiter was overworked and just wanted to go home. The appetizer was brought after the main course / Martini partially poured over the table when serving. My wife was repeatedly consolingly tapped on the shoulder as an apology that something kept going wrong. She was served unfinished fries. When you went to order, most of the dishes that were on the menu were told that they were not on sale that day. What was available tasted acceptable - but took away any enjoyment of that particular day due to the poor atmosphere. Our recommendation to the owner: Don't do things by halves - close properly on 25.12 and relieve the staff than just on a day where families come together to spoil one's day. :(_ read more
