I've heard about the Himalayan Institute for a while, but finally took the plunge and signed up for a 6-week long class series of their "Level II" yoga classes last night. The Himalayan Institute is a wonderful 501(3)c non-profit that offers yoga classes, workshops, lectures, etc inside their elegant mansion on Delaware Ave. When you stop in, you feel like you're inside a cozy home. There's a place to take off your shoes and an immediate bookstore to your left. Further down, there's the main living room where classes take place. It helps to take a class that has 10-12 people and not too much more as the room can get pretty crowded with 16+ people or so I hear. Here's what stands out about the Himalayan Institute: their yoga classes generally center around a meditation-practice. As a result, I feel incredibly relaxed and focused afterward. As opposed to some classes (such as Evolation), where I sweat like I'm inside some Finnish bathhouse and leave the class with more of an exercise high. With most classes, you have to sign up for a full 6-week commitment (usually $80), although they do offer drop-in classes on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm for beginners ($5) and on Saturdays (9:30-11am) for a more intermediate ($10) practice. In summary, I adore their meditative approach, yoga teachers as well as the novelty of practicing yoga inside a cozy old mansion. Unfortunately, there are no accessible showers in the facility, but there is a bathroom where you can change.

The titles of classes aren't always reflective of what you will get (example one day says "All levels Vinyasa" when in reality it's a meditation class). I do always leave relaxed and refreshed and the classes seem to fly by.

But all that aside, Raw Renewal Yoga is my newest place to practice the way I want to, and I absolutely love being able to absorb myself in a style of yoga that fits in with my personal practice. For the unfamiliar, Buti Yoga is probably the most fast paced style of yoga I've ever practiced, and also the one that seems the least like yoga. You will move around. You will sweat. You will get the same mental high that traditional vinyasa yoga gives you. You will dance, and you will dance for joy. Most importantly, you will work hard. I suppose you could say all of that for all of Raw Renewal's class offerings, at least the ones I've tried. Since Raw Renewal Yoga is so close to my office, it's been convenient to attend the lunch hour classes. Those classes are 30 minutes and you can get a lot done in that short time. Hour long classes can be found in the morning and after the work hours. If you're new to the studio, they offer a 2-week unlimited package, which I got in order to try as many classes as I could and decide what I liked the best. And there were many! Buti Yoga is fast paced and kind of insane, so if you want to try something similar but a little slower, consider Buti Flow. During the lunch hour, I tried Buti Bands (resistance bands on legs), Fit Flow (think vinyasa yoga with weights), Sculpt (think HIIT style training), and Hotcore (done in socks for extra drag while you swing your legs all over the place). The lunch classes had similar styles, you would do a cardio type move, then stretch it out in a traditional yoga pose and repeat this for a few sets. Again I say, you can get a lot done in 30 minutes during that lunch break! Megan is the studio owner, and she is extremely welcoming and helpful. I told her about my chronic shoulder injuries, and she has been conscious of it to the point where we were talking about certain yoga poses that may have caused my injuries and how we were going to build up my strength so that I could get back into them. How nice is that? I also took class with LauRen, who was great about getting me into a rotator cuff-friendly version of Hotcore (planks and I don't really get along anymore, so I did the plank moves on all fours and still felt it big time). I didn't make it to class with Mandy, but I've taken her class at Barre Centric a ton of times so I knew what I'd be getting into there, and I can absolutely see how she ended up teaching Buti Yoga! I can't wait to get another pass to Raw Renewal Yoga. It's so wonderful to have another studio in town and a new style to practice in. See you on the mat!

Yin is a special kind of yoga that typically stays low to the ground, and involves staying in deep stretches for longer amounts of time. It's a really beautiful, meditative experience, and definitely requires a special kind of teacher. Up until about a month ago, I had never actually been to the studio in person. When I finally did go, I was met with a warm, clean, and cozy room on a rainy day. The instructor was welcoming and gave modifications for every move. I felt very comfortable, and will definitely be back for more!

Movement just renovated 2 studios in the same building. They have a room for mat classes and another for x-former Pilates reformers. The studios are beautiful, contemporary, bright and Instagram worthy. The class was much different than the standard Pilates reformer that I usually do. It was challenging but still possible for all levels. The instructor was encouraging and very thorough. I got in a great workout in a short amount of time. Post workout they had a little reception in their courtyard complete with a food truck, cocktails, fruit and cookies. It was really nice to meet other members and instructors, I could see they have a really nice community here. Everyone was friendly and it was an elegant event. I'll come by again to try some of their other classes.

Each class targets an area to focus on (spine, back,etc) which helps me to truly concentrate on improving/strengthening this specific area. Joy provides great instruction as she guides you through the poses and always offers suggestions for modifications, if needed. The flow of Joy's classes is steady-time to adjust to each pose and feel the calmness of the movement. By the end of each class, I feel my body has become stronger and more sure of itself. Highly recommend this class!
