Yo, this...was fire.... I was bored of sitting in my hotel room and decided to drive around and explore. I came across Sauce on the Side. Figured some pizza sounded good. I walked in and asked the guys what their top sellers or favorites were.... Ended up taking their recommended Cock-a-Doodle Noodle Calzone. The guys brought it out with a buffalo sauce and some queso. Paired it with an adult Arnold Palmer... I sat down at a long nice wooden table, with silverware rolled up next to me. Watched some of their prep and handywork on the large tv, then my food came out. Was it carb heavy? Yes. Was it delicious? Absolutely. The cuisine here is just as legendary as it looks! Everything is homemade (which can be tricky to find in restaurants). The staff is unbelievable (especially Chelsea!). This is a great spin on the make your own pizza (but with a calzone)... but ramped up another level with creative stylings from the team. The ideas like Figgy Piggy seem intriguing, but then deliver on the promise that they knew what they were doing. Each time they push the envelope, they deliver on taste. For instance, in January, they have a Sausage Scramble. This breakfast calzone includes eggs, cheese, potatoes, sausage, and seasonings. The included maple gravy butter makes this great dish perform on a new platform altogether. We tried this, and found this was even better than it sounds.... We all expressed wishes that was year round. My wife and I both have our favorites (with our own tweaks), and we are recurring customers. Recently we spent a week in Lake St. Louis to visit family for the holidays. I was overwhelmed with all of the chain restaurants available there, but Sauce on the Side was such a good find! Will have to keep this in rotation for our next visit. What they are known for are calzones served with, as the name tells you, sauce on the side. If you know me, you know that I Love SAUCE, so this is the restaurant for me! In an effort to eat more vegetables, since my diet mostly consisted of fast food for the past few days, I got the Magic Carpet Ride ($11). It came in a huge portion, that was enough to feed me for 2 meals and a side of the most delicious garlic butter I've ever tasted. Mmm...still drooling just thinking about the flavorful, gooey, sauce. My husband got the Meat Me in St. Louis ($10), which was loaded with CHEESE and meat. His only critique was that it was a tad cheese heavy, but I didn't see that stop him from devouring his entire calzone. To continue on my quest for vegetables, I also ordered the small Beets Me salad ($8). The salad was very flavorful; however very light on the beets. There were probably 5 small strips of beets in the beet salad, which was a tad disappointing because I love beets. The wine pours were also on the skimpy side. I feel like I took two sips and needed a refill on the wine, but maybe as a toddler mom, I expect larger wine portions than the average consumer. All in all, I would definitely recommend. Overall, good. Not fantastic, not stupendous, but good. The menu is mostly calzones and they do them pretty well. The calzones we had were ok, but nothing overwhelmingly good. The Garden was a nice chancce to get some veggies back in a diet and the Dukes was a play on BBQ, I presume an homage to Duke's BBQ, a nearby classic joint. The Figgy Piggy was easily the best. Sodas are not brand name and there is a decent beer selection. The door opening and closing meant a near constant draft every minuteNor so, even sitting in the middle ooF the restaurant. My first trip to this restaurant was not the best but that was the at their grand opening. The owner actually personally reached out and made things right which was incredibly appreciated! Everytime we have gone after the food has been great! They make some unique calzones and their garlic knots are to die for! They also have a variety of local drafts on tap as well as in can. The Meat Me in St. Louie calzone my husband ordered was about the same. A canned Schlafly Pale Ale and a glass of wine rounded out our meals. Bottom line: about thirty bucks plus tax. Warehouse-style flooring so nothing fancy there. Menu on the wall. Order at the counter. We received our drinks at the counter and our food order was brought to our table. I was impressed with the cloth napkins, wine served in a stemmed wine glass (tastes SO much better than when served in a plastic cup!) and real service ware - no plastic. We went here for dinner tonight. The place is really cool and modern looking. They were fairly busy when we walked in but it didn't take them hardly any time to clear out the line. This is the kind of place where you order at the counter and then take a seat with the number. They had two pills going to clear up the line. When we got up to the till to order II cashier I decided to close her drawer without saying anything to us so we had waited all that time and then had to wait again in the other line for the first person. Not a particularly big deal because they cleared everyone out quite quickly. I had a salad and a calzone that I ordered with an extra sauce. My boyfriend ordered a calzone. When the salad arrived it was the wrong order but be very nice server quickly exchanged it for the correct one. Even though the service had a rocky start to begin with all of the servers bringing us our food were very friendly. The salad was very obviously put together with fresh materials but it had red peppers in it when I had asked to have them leave out the red peppers. The dressing was okay at first and went really nice with the tomatoes but eventually towards the end of the salad it was all just too salty. My boyfriend really enjoyed the calzone he got, but he thought the inside were a little salty. He really liked the Italian herb topping is it canceled out some of the salt. I didn't care for either of the sauces on the side that I had gotten the garlic butter or the original. And while the calzone was really well cooked the breading was flavorless and the insides were separated where you would have a bite of cheese calzone and then a separate bite of mushroom calzone. I thought they used too many italian herbs and it threw off the flavor for me. We will probably give them another try. read more

Have been to this restaurant like 10 times and have yet to see them follow proper sanitation rules when it comes to preparing food. I've tried to give them many chances but never see a change in them actually wearing gloves or washing their hands. Just not a good time and I never feel good about getting my food here. Today was a rough day, I decided to order out, we just moved and the kids were going crazy, as I open the door to pay for our delivery, my children are screaming, opening the door, letting the dogs out, I apologized to the girl delivering our food, she said, "you look like you need a hug" I don't think I even replied to her I just hugged her and held back the tears of moving, the holidays, sick parents, young children and just an overwhelmingly crappy year. She said, "I don't know if anyone has told you today, but you're doing a wonderful job as a mother!" I replied, that I was about to cry. We exchanged smiles and I closed the door. It was incredibly nice for her to acknowledge me as a human and the compassion she showed was remarkable. It was a simple hug, but THEN, hours later my husband answers the door and she came back by to bring desserts to us to help off set my terrible day. I remember seeing this girl before at target, she was dropping off a sauce on the side order. She was bubbly and patient. This girl is going somewhere. She is someone i would never let leave bc she is the reason people will come back, especially with the overwhelming lack of service around the world at the moment. I've never wrote a review for any restaurant ever! So that has to tell y'all something about our overall experience!! My husband, my 15 month old baby, and I went there tonight for dinner. We had a voucher for a free calzone that someone had got from a manager and gave to us. Everyone was super nice to us when we were ordering and answered my random questions. We've eaten here before and have always liked the food. This is the first time we've been here since our baby was born. We ordered a Caesar salad to share, the calzone with chorizo on it, and "meat me one St. Louis." I had my baby on my lap when Darren came over and asked if We wanted a high chair. He was super nice and got this for us without asking and then offered to get the baby some strawberries and mandarin oranges. That really made an impression on me and I thought "how sweet." We were eating all the food and it was delicious when out of no where, our baby threw up all over the place. It was so embarrassing. We were trying to clean it all up because really, no one else should have to deal with our baby's throw up. Darren immediately came over, said it wasn't a big deal, and happily helped us out and mopped. He told us to just sit at the other table and he would take care of it. Again, I felt so bad about this. But he really did act like it wasn't a big thing and made a joke about that's why they have the type of floor that they did. He mopped the floor and sanitized the whole area so it would be nice and clean for someone else. Great when assembled correctly. Calzones are similar to burritos. You have to have a bit of all of it in a bite to really get the complete flavor. Unfortunately a few times we've been here my calzones have had a mish mash of fillings on only one side, which made for a mediocre at best calzone.
