Were my expectations too high? No - I did a 2 week Ayurvedic treatment in India in 2002 and it was a life-changing improvement in sinus congestion and "brain fog", which required 2-3 cups of strong coffee daily. Unfortunately, the improvements went away over time - completely my fault for not following their recommended lifestyle changes (reduce dairy, etc.). Fast forward to 2017. Took some time between projects as my health had started to deteriorate. My mom had benefited from Dr. Lad's colleague, Dr. David Fowley (who wasn't practicing much in his old age), so I tried Dr. Lad instead. The house I shared with fellow patients for a week seemed run down, but clean. No worries since I was there to improve my health, not lounge at a 5-star hotel (the facility in India was far worse). Dr. Lad seemed very nice and empathetic, but you only get 30-45 minutes with him. His medical assistant (can't remember her name) seemed very rushed and told me I should be grateful for that extra 15 minutes with Dr. Lad. Really? I'm a paying customer, not a charity case! She was incorrect in her statement that there's no viral issue (went to a real doctor to confirm). She had none of Dr. Lad's empathy, and coupled with an inaccurate diagnosis, would definitely not recommend. The staff doing the PK treatment were very nice, but the treatment itself had no benefit. They kept suggesting adding more treatments (extra $), which felt nice, but again, no medical improvement. If you want a spa experience, go to an actual spa. If you want medical benefits, go somewhere else. Good luck in your journey!

I was invited by a friend, who is a big fan of Vasant Lad, and says that he is the teacher of Deepak Chopra. There's apparently a film about him at the Guild at the time of this writing. What I don't know about Ayurveda could fill their bookstore (and probably does), but Vasant Lad is a great speaker, clearly highly knowledgeable, and kept it interesting, while being cautious not to describe Ayurveda as a magic bullet that we should all practice like authorities on our neighbors. The only slightly negative vibe I had was when he was determining the "doshas" of audience members, and then suggesting they were this, that, or the other thing ("Oh! You always fall asleep with a book!"). That part struck me as a little psychic-like. Ayurveda has a lot of basis to it, but at the same time I think that people like that psychic-who-am-I kind of thing and so he was offering that, but I found his lecture topics linking aspects to the science that I was more familiar with, to be more of interest. They had a brochure that I perused at the beginning, that requested please no photos, bare shoulders, open beverages, or children. All four of these things I saw in evidence, but people were trying to be respectful. The one heads up I would give, is that at least at the first talk, you needed to remove your shoes. The people at the Institute define nice. They served tea, and snacks, and they came up to you with authentic smiles and greetings, genuinely trying to be helpful and informative. I came away intrigued, having had a good time, and wondering if I wanted to pursue some course of study with them. Or at the very least, adopt some good, easy lifestyle habits that would probably make me a much happier, healthier human.

Then I started feeling dizzy and lasted good part of the week and weekend I called to talk to Davetta -Reiki Teacher, she was very kind an actually thru facetime/heal (hard to explain) but I was able to eat and move around a little better to point that I had to go see her the next day. She and Reiki Master Lois- both helped me that day and thru that process I was able to release more than I knew that I was holding on to. Was an Emotional and Amazing healing for me, I felt lighter and it did take a few days to feel Right again, But I did! She would agree to 20 minute treatments but actually leave me for 30 minutes or longer, charging my insurance for the longer period. So this is a difficult review to write because my criticisms are through absolutely no fault of…read moretheir own. But they are huge so must be mentioned. I have an interesting mix of symptoms and issues that I'll summarize by just saying I'm tired all the time. Since I've been having these issues (5 years) I've seen 7 different doctors. I have not been tested for anything. I've been told I'm too fat and that I should "consider going to the gym". Some doctors refuse to give me medications, others load me up with pain killers and muscle relaxants that leave me unable to safely drive. It's awful not getting quality care or even just being listened to as a human being. Friends with chronic pain and autoimmune disorders sympathize and have given me significantly better "care" over the internet than the actual doctors I've seen. One friend was commiserating with me once again recently when she realized there is a Red River Health & Wellness here in ABQ. (She goes to one in another state for her thyroid issues and loves it.) I saw that they do a free consultation and I jumped on it! They tell you to arrive half an hour early to fill out the VERY comprehensive medical forms if you are not able to print them and fill them out at home. They ask questions on there about symptoms I've had and didn't think any doctor would take seriously! (Dismissing them as merely cosmetic). Red River takes note of all that! It was AMAZING talking to Dr Joshua Conzo! Thorough, caring, knowledgeable. THIS is what a doctor should be. THIS is how medical care should be!! We discussed not just myself but some general medical stuff such as how the thyroid functions normally in a body and several of the things that can go wrong with it. The giant, huge, insurmountable problem: As the chiropractic physicians at Red River practice Functional Medicine, their services are not covered by insurance. Even though their services are well within the parameters of typical western medicine (eg ordering a blood test), their style of doing things isn't covered. It's ludicrous. They are merely ordering for me the tests that any doctor should have ordered, to try to figure out what the heck is going on, and yet because of the type of doctors they are, insurance won't cooperate. The pros are that they are WELL aware of this and have suggestions for how to proceed. The cons are that even with their attempts to bring the price down, you are still paying cash - $300 for tests, $100 for office visits....and who has that kind of money?? This is a PHENOMENAL practice that specializes in issues with the endocrine system. You will get thorough, quality care here. But good luck paying for it. :(
