Large pieces, rocks and even a dog bone in the mulch. It was not double shred. Also the larger pieces were not even cedar. I wont order from them again. I ordered 5 yards of dirt and asked that it be dropped on the right side of driveway so as to not block the other door. I have ordered dirt for 20 years and no one has ever had a problem dropping the dirt where I've asked. The driver either didn't read the instructions or is incapable of operating his truck properly. Then to make matters worse, he drove over the side lawn and leaked oil on my driveway. When contacting the company I received terrible customer service from Kim and and unacceptable email from Don Saunders just making excuses. I ordered several tons of 57 bluestone. Most of the order was not the normal 3/4" bluestone you see listed at every place that sells the product. Most of the order was small, very thin supercrushed pieces. When mixed with the other pieces, it doesn't look good because there is too much of the fine stuff. Looks like I ordered finely crushed bluestone and some 3/4" pieces made it in. When I complained, they said bottom of the pile orders sometimes have some crushed pieces but it's within spec. I disagree. Some finely crushed is OK, but not most. Stupid me made this second order from them after I was not happy with the first because I wanted gravel from both orders to look the same. I should have gone somewhere else and will next time. Beware there's a lot of wiggle room in what they present on their website and what you may get. read more

Ordered 3yards of compost for almost $300. I was delivered mulch, Not compost. When I called to have the mistake corrected, they told me that I was not delivered mulch, "it is definitely compost". I emailed pictures to the company of the woody mulch they gave me and I got second opinions from many others to make sure I am not crazy and everyone says it is mulch and definitely not compost. Despite sending pictures to the company, I was still told it was compost and it matches what they have. Thank you very much Saunders for delivering $300 golden mulch that I am now stuck with sitting in my driveway. read more

The mason sand I purchased was completely dirty and management trespassed on my property and the entire experience with Saunders Landscaping was horrible. The delivery was late as well. The topsoil organic mix is ok, but my 15 yd delivery had *many* large blobs of clay that I had to toss aside. Altogether maybe 1/2 yd of the 15, but dispersed throughout. Also, the compost was not premixed with the soil, rather it was in layers, like a layer cake, as if they loaded the truck with first a large scoop of mulch, then a large scoop of soil, etc. Because of these problems I had to use a rototiller to mix and break up clumps (most clumps I had to toss) before putting on the yard. I should also note that the delivery truck was from JK Enterprise, so I'm not sure, but Saunders may be subcontracting its Northern Virginia orders. If so, that is quite unethical. UPDATE: I ordered a 2nd 15 yd load of topsoil, and it was much better than the 1st. It still had some chunks of clay, but quite manageable, and the layer-cake effect was gone, i.e., the soil & mulch were well mixed. I've raised my rating to a 4*. Lesson learned: don't order after a series of rainy days. read more

I have ordered 35 yards of compost from Saunders in previous years. I have had zero complaints and very good experience. This year I ordered 12 yards of mulch. It will be delivered today, march 29. They have given me window of 7 am to 6pm. Which is okay. But I have a new driveway and want to be present for the delivery. Unannounced I got really sick and have a virtual doctors office from 10:30 to 11:30. I called the Chantilly location to explain the situation and ask for help. I simply wanted the driver know that I won't be available from 10:30 to 11:30 and I really want to be present for the delivery as I have a new driveway. Kim kept repeating herself, kept talking over me. When I tried to talk, she told me to stop yelling. Well I was trying to relay something that she refused to listen or acknowledge. She would not let me speak to anyone else. KIM is an EXTREMELY RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL person. She HUNG UP the phone on me. I called back and asked to speak to someone else. A man came on the phone and backed up Kim and hung up on me. They both told me ti NOT COME BACK FOR FUTURE BUSINESS! Who tells customers not yo come back. He told me that he cannot be at two places at the same time. So I have to pick... either attend my doctors appointment or be present for the delivery. Or just let the driver dump the mulch on the driveway. WTH! I have had experience in the past where the drivers have ruined my yard. I want to be cautious. I'm spending money. Firewood is terrible. Most pieces are 10+inches thick and varying lengths from 10-22 inches. Way too big for fireplace, will need to be split 2-3 more times. And it is not seasoned, is still light colored and very heavy, does not burn. Owners response to our complaint- "you got what you ordered". Needless to say won't order again or do any other business with this jerk. read more

Before ordering from Saunders we tried the local nurseries and bagged mulch from the big box stores but were not happy with their products. Give them a try; you won't be disappointed. read more

We used Saunders for the first time this fall and ordered a quarter cord of firewood. I ordered online and Saunders nicely called to confirm. The delivery was on time and they were very polite. Saunders was in fact over generous and left a little more wood than we wanted. We would have been thrilled by this, but since they also don't stack, the extra firewood proved to be a bit of a hardship to move and find room for on our property. We only had one small log holder and a lot of wood to deal with. These are minor issues, however, and we were overall happy with the delivery. read more

Firewood. Prompt delivery and fair price. I ordered 1 cord, and it was about the right amount. The wood was of varying lengths and cut in hearty chunks. It looks old, like it had been sitting in a pile for a year or two, and some of the pieces have mold. It's not dried, so doesn't burn very well. I realized after I tried it out that they basically have a bunch of cut trees hanging around and sell when they can. They don't kiln dry the wood (rather it's called 'seasoned'). I think if I ordered again, I would but let it sit for a year in a covered pile where it could dry out. read more

Great service- I used it the online order system to have some garden soil delivered. My initial choice for next day was already booked since I ordered late in the day. They quickly called me and arranged a better delivery day so the soil would not sit blocking my driveway until I could use it. I ordered a cord of unseasoned firewood via their website on a Tuesday for delivery on Wednesday. After charging my credit card, they called to request that we reschedule for that Friday, claiming that was the earliest possible day they could deliver. Mind you, the online form indicated nothing of the sort. I asked them if they could do Thursday, and they told me that Friday was the absolute earliest--less a "request" than a demand, I suppose. I needed the wood and I figured they might not be using a scheduling form that was synced up with their actual schedule, so I went ahead and agreed to the rescheduled delivery day. I explained that I had plans for the weekend and wouldn't be able to leave a pile of wood in my driveway for days at a time, so getting it on Friday was important. Friday afternoon comes around, and while I'd received an email receipt for the charge to my card there was no wood and no call. I called to check, and after an hour received a call back. Apparently, the one person with a truck that was going to deliver the wood had been busy all day doing an "emergency tree removal" and didn't expect to be able to make it by a "decent" time. At that point I wasn't especially interested in rescheduling for a second time, particularly after they'd taken my money and committed to a day they themselves had picked. I asked them to refund my money, which they did. I don't know how they are as landscapers, but needless to say I will not be attempting to buy firewood from them again. They were very polite, but apparently the firewood business is not a priority for them. read more

Our front yard is dirt and tree roots, no grass. We had a new sidewalk put in from the porch to the street sidewalk. It was 6 inches above our dirtline. We need soil to fill in on the sides to make sure the underpinnings were not washed away by the rain. I found the Saunders website, used the calulator, and ordered top soil online, with them delivering it the next day. Then I saw quite a few bad reviews on yelp. However, our experience was quite satisfying. The driver, Mr. Diggins called at 7:15 to say he would be there in an 30 minutes. He arrived on time, managed to maneuver his truck on a pretty crowded street, dumped the soil (including getting inside and making sure the truck was emptied out), and was gone very quickly. He was very pleasant and professional. I don't care what was in the soil, although I have to say whatever clumps that was in it were broken up fairly easily by stomping on them. I have no complaints and will use them again in the future when we will need more topsoil. read more

This company took my order for 6 yards of dirt to be delivered. I received a confirmation number and all was well. A full day later (and less than 48 hours before the scheduled delivery), I received an email from this company demanding that I order at least 2 more yards or they would cancel my order. Nowhere in my conversation with them was this mentioned when I placed my order nor is this limit noted on their website. It boils down to the "free delivery" -- they agreed to and took my order and then decided that they weren't going to make enough on it, so they tried to squeeze another $100 out of me by forcing me to purchase more than I had originally ordered. I was able to find another company to deliver the 6 yards with no problem. When I called Saunders back to cancel my order, they became irate, rude, and hung up on me. Buyer beware. read more

We have used this company in the past, but never again. The 7 yards of mulch that they delivered was riddled with blue, sand-type stone. I contacted the company and they sent out the owner. He said it was CR6 and not to worry about using it just sift through the mulch. Really??? Moving that much mulch and now having to sift through it to remove foreign stuff. Some of it made it into my landscaping and looks bad. I left a pile of my sifted CR6 in a bucket and it turns to mud when in the rain. This is a totally unacceptable way to conduct business. You should provide a product that your customer pays for not with junk in it. They would have received 1 star, but their driver did an awesome job of dumping the mulch in my woods off of the driveway. I would attach photos if Yelp allowed so you could see for yourself. read more

You get what you pay for, I have ordered firewood in July for this winter. The wood was of excellent quality, yes they are the most expensive but like I always say, want quality, your' ll pay for it. I ordered a 1/2 cord and they delivered 3/4 of a cord. All hard wood. I can't vouch for the other services they provide, but for firewood, they are the best around. read more

Don't get your mulch here unless you want a lot less than you pay for! I ordered 12 yards of mulch as I do every year to cover my beds. My previous supplier Tildens retired so I had to look for a new resource. In the past 14 years 12 yards has been more than enough to cover my front and back yard beds. I ordered from Saunders and when they came out to deliver I told the driver that I ordered 12 yards and what he unloaded was no where near that. He said it was 12 yards and there was nothing he could do, so I immediately called the office and spoke to Sarah and advised the delivery was short. Sarah said she would investigate and get back to me shortly. Sarah never called me back, I called 2 hours later and spoke to Mary and she said Sarah was out and would be back soon and she would have her call me. I never received a call. I proceeded to spread the mulch, and as I already knew, it wasn't even enough to complete my front yard. I figure I was given around 8 yards.The following day I called and spoke to Sarah and she said the driver and loader said it was 12 yards. I asked to speak to the owner and Sarah said she would have him call me. Later that day manager Traci called to let me know that the load was correct, exactly what Sarah had already said, when I told her I already had that discussion with Sarah and was waiting on a call from the owner Don. The next day 4/20 9am Don calls to say he will investigate and get back to me.Don calls me back an hour later to reiterate what I had already been told and didn't seem to care that I was shorted and made no attempt to resolve the issue. I will never do business with Saunders ever again and wouldn't recommend them to anyone! read more
