The woman who rang up my two bottles of wine at this Kroger called me "darling" no fewer than five times during our four-minute interaction, and I loved it. As if we were continuing a conversation we had left off earlier, she also jumped into the middle of a story about a man who was looking for tomato sauce. I didn't follow but just went with it all. By the time I left the grocery store, gripping a bottle of red in each hand like a wino, I felt like I had gained a friend in Wheeling. My Kroger visit happened because I tried to visit a wine store in downtown Wheeling that didn't actually exist. Undeterred, I stopped into Kroger to see what was what in the wine section. They were actually having a huge sale, with many good bottles under $10, so I grabbed a Malbec and a Cabernet. The sale was so good that I wanted to go back and grab a few more bottles, but I resisted. I was visiting from out of town, and there's only so much room in the car for wine. This Kroger is a little hidden from the road, and you need to make some turns to get into the parking lot. But once you get to it, it's a nice little Kroger with nice people.

Today, a young man named Avery went out of his way to help me out big time, and I really appreciated it. The whole team deserves recognition, and a lot of credit goes to the manager, Pat. He runs a tight ship and clearly leads by example. It shows in the attitude and work ethic of the entire crew. Sometimes it gets busy. It's no big deal. I use a self check out all the time. They have great random selection of things you need. The prices are great. I've never had an issue except when they ask for my receipt I just reply. No, thank you. I always have parking. The carts are usually in decent condition. I appreciate the hard work from a few of the employees. I remember their names Scott and the hunting section for the ladies in the self check out and there's a nice lady who is always cleaning up after everyone she always has a smile on her face. I never see her name tag because she is actually working. Probably my one and only complaint is I wish some of the lanes were wider. Customer service is not an easy business. People do work hard at this location.

Public Market) is the smaller of the two markets. It's small, but it also houses the Wheeling Visitor Center, so it's still important. There's a little grocery store inside, with lots of fresh produce and local goods, like honey, jams and breads. They also had an astounding amount of probiotic foods, like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and other fermented foods. These are located in a refrigerated section by the produce. I was told that Public Market would be a good place to get something to eat, but I couldn't find anything but groceries. When I asked a lady if there was a restaurant or food stall or some place to get a bite inside public market, she said, "They'll make you a little something. What do you want? A sandwich? They'll make you a sandwich." She walked away, and I was left puzzled. Who is "they"? And yes, I did want a sandwich, so who did I need to ask to make me one? Alas, I never did find this fabled sandwich-maker inside Public Market, but apparently, they do serve food here. Maybe I just visited on a day when "they" weren't there. Like I mentioned, the Wheeling Visitor Center is located here. It's in a small section at the front entrance, tucked away. This is also home to the Wheeling-Ohio County CVB. Apparently, sometimes there's someone behind the desk who you can talk to, and sometimes there isn't. Much like the sandwich-maker, I think if you're there at the right time, you'll see them. But if not, there's always literature and pamphlets and information about the area that you can pick up and take with you.
