The staff seemed shy/unexperienced/tired. They served us aperitifs and then took away our drink menu and never offered us wine with our meal, which we thought was a bit weird. Secondly, there wasn't much enthusiasm with the staff, they seemed like robots, systematically placing food on our table, and very brief and soft spoken description about what we were eating. Maybe it's because it's Christmas season, but still... I never had an experience like this at Sudøst or Dinner and those places are equally as busy all year round.

The service was exeptionally friendly and attentive. We started off with two sashimi dishes - salmon with grapefruit and ponzu sauce was fresh and perfectly balanced, and the tun tartare with coriander cream on wonton crackers was so good that we had to order another serving of it. After the sashimi, we had two types of maki - the tempura lobster maki, and the spicy tuna. Both were delicious and quite rich, with a generous amount of very nice spicy mayo. The spicy tuna maki was made with tarragon and avocado, which was a very nice and aromatic combo. Tatakii could have had more wines by the glass, but the ones the have are very good. Alongside the food, we had a lovely glass of riesling from the Pfalz region, which worked very well.

We all ordered the large set menu to get the full Monty. Unlike a lot of places there was no filler dish at the end, if you know what I mean. (Nodee serve loads of small dishes and you're always wanting more until the end when a mountain of Peking duck arrives) where these guys give you slightly more each time, just enough to keep you wanting more but not leaving you ravenous. This has also to do with the pacing, with Japanese tempo: four ultra tasty snacks in quick succession (chili cheese balls blew me away even though the oyster snacky things that came first would have been at home in a 3* restaurant) followed by four more dishes at a leisurely pace. These included the craziest langoustine ever (gratinert and the head and claws blowtorched in a wooden wine box with a glass lid!) Some very interesting Japanese beers to choose from and a comprehensive wine list that we didn't look at. Very friendly attentive service too. Book before it gets too popular - this place is going to rock Oslo for a while!

We'd enjoyed a series of great Nordic-style meals on our trip to Copenhagen and then Oslo. But, on…read moreour last night with our granddaughter in Oslo, we craved a change from all those delicious steamed-in-cream muscles, tasty baked salmon and classic smoresbords. Izakaya fit the bill. In fact, it may have ended up being the best meal of our week-long trip. Yes, as you've read and can see from other Yelpers' photos, it's teeny tiny inside. But, when you get lucky and get seated, it's nice and cozy. You certainly aren't merely one 2-top in a long boring row of tables that's for sure. There's no sign outside but because it has a distinctive look on the exterior (see photos of the heavy grillwork on the windows) you really can't miss it. A Yelper's description of 'Japanese tapas' is right on the mark, tho this is a bit of mixed metaphor. Dishes (especially the last two below) are relatively small. Maybe four dishes will do for two people but you'll likely end up as we three did: wanting a bit more. We started with the Gyoza. Definitely delicious and served piping hot. Next was Bang Bang Ji - shredded chicken, julienned cucumber, and a spicy sauce. Good and a nice prelude to the Mazemen. Our hands-down favorite of the night was the Mazemen, broth-less ramen with a delicious sauce, oil, and toppings. Especially delicious with the egg (poached?) mixed in. Had we immediately ordered another three more bowls of this wonderfully tasty dish I doubt if there'd have been much of an objection! Okonomiyaki - a savory pancake. Good. We didn't want to leave without a bit more. So, we ordered the Senmaizuke, pickled turnip and chili with a sweet, tangy vinegar marinade, and the Shiitake no fukumeni, mushrooms simmered in a sweet and savory broth. Both of these relatively small dishes were quite delicious - but really would have tasted best as early appetizers. The Kirin beer really hit the spot. Service was quick and efficient. Pacing was fine with no rush despite the line that had formed in the little foyer. YELPER HINT: if you're stuck in the line but thirsty, you can go on in and stand at a small (2 ft. wide) open section of the bar and order/pay for beers (not sure about their cocktails) and then re-take your place in line. In short, Izakaya could - and likely will - provide your tastiest, most interesting and perhaps even your most delicious meal in wonderful Oslo.

Difficult to find, at least for the Oslo taxi drivers (I've had at least two drivers who had never…read moreheard of the restaurant, nor could they find the address). Still, the place is very popular, and a reservation is recommended. Plah is modern style, Norwegian Thai food at its best, even though its best has probably past the BBD. Choose between à la carte (starters 105-145 NOK, mail courses 235-275 NOK), or opt for a 5 or 8 course tasting menu (495/545 NOK). A third option is to try some of the Thai style "tapas", or Street Food as they are called here, priced around 50-70 NOK per serving. The menu is constantly changing, as it should be, but it is unfortunate that the "signature dish" (in my book), Svineskank (knuckle of pork), has been deleted from the menu. Oysters Naturel, "Hoi Nang Rom" is good, but just plain lemon works better with oysters than sweet chili sauce. Why complicate a winning concept? The pork neck, or svinenakke (as a poor substitute for svineskank), is decent, but not extraordinary. All in all, good food, but not the best Asian in Scandinavia, or probably not even in town, and the price - 595 NOK/81 EUR, plus tip for starter and main, including two glasses of wine - is, as pretty much everything in Oslo, nothing less than outrageous.
