Over the course of almost 2 years, there was no progress made in our case, and the case is still active. They were fast to take us on as a client, but then communication became next to nothing over the course of our tenure with them. Every 2-3 months we would follow up with case status but there was nothing to report, and we were told to sit tight. After about 2 years, we decided to change firms and asked for all correspondence related to the case and the investigator, but Brill's firm could not produce any informative emails or updates with the investigator. Most of the communication was "calls" and "voicemails", but nothing that showed progress or an attempt to bring closure. Brill's firm is either too busy (likely) or doesn't care enough (possible) to help with cases deemed "less significant" to them. In short, 2 years later we're in the same spot we were, and we are currently evaluating new representation. If we could go back, we would have paid the premium (higher cost) for other attorneys who we interviewed with who seemed more invested in our case.

He told me he needed to bill me for his conversations. I asked what happened with my deposit and he said it was all used up. I asked for an accounting of my funds that were used as per our agreement. He never sent them. A few months later I received correspondence from the IRS indicating the examiner had been trying to reach him and if he did not respond the agreement they discussed would be rescinded. I tried to contact/find him. I went to the local address for the company he worked for only to find out he had been let go 2 weeks before. No account had ever been opened for my case. I NEVER HEARD FROM HIM AGAIN! He left me hanging with a serious IRS Audit situation. I had to scuttle and find a new attorney. Very unprofessional! I know he did some work but I don't think he should have spent 19 hours which is what the deposit would have covered.

I had a meeting scheduled which I waited for. It was scheduled for 5PM but she had called way after that; that's not an issue though as I gave it some wiggle-room. It started off fine and formal but she was pace-policing immediately, so if I said anything more than she wanted to hear, she'd interject. And the thing is, I know how this dance goes. I only give pertinent information during this call, they're not therapists or partners, they're intake assistants. They handle the brunt of the emotion and potential plaintiffs and defendants. I would wait patiently even though she'd constantly snap-interject over whatever I was saying. She'd constantly interrupt what I was saying to add unnecessary and pointed interrogatives, like "okay, yeah but who?" and I would be like "...the next word I was going to say was literally their name. Why do you keep doing that? Why do you keep interjecting like that? You keep interrupting and not letting me talk every time I speak." And she ignored my question, she just pretended like I didn't ask her anything and continued on with the interview. Then whenever I'd ask her a minute question like if she needed anything, she wouldn't respond at all. She wouldn't acknowledge my questions or inquiries, and she'd only resume when she wanted to. So I just patiently put up with it but she got petty about it. Eventually, once again - she kept doing the thing where she would interrupt me to ask redundantly about the thing I was about to say, like she knew she was being obnoxious. Eventually I was saying how I was mistreated and I used an F-bomb as in "The company got caught red-fuckin'-handed" and once again, she starts talking over me and was like, "LET'S KEEP THIS PROFESSIONAL, WE'RE ALL PROFESSIONALS HERE, NO BAD LANGUAGE" and while she was doing that we got disconnected, and I don't know if she hung up on me on purpose or if I or someone near me bumped my phone, and we tried calling each other back. She left a voicemail saying she doesn't know what happened but if I want to work with her, call her back. I called back, she picked up the phone and left it off the hook for five minutes. She was talking to someone else in the background but she just left it off the hook after telling me to call back. I thought she might've just wanted me to wait on hold or something, and then she just hung up on me after a few minutes and didn't answer the next time I called. It's a concern because if I were a plaintiff in this case, and I needed immediate intervention and assistance from someone from Valli Kane, and she was behaving like that and was the one handling the inbound communication? We'd be detrimentally fucked. Strategically she is a liability, and I really didn't appreciate the way she treated me. Please be careful guys!

I wish I could say he was at least a nice guy, but I can't -- Matthew Tannenbaum is not a nice guy, and he's a bad lawyer. I honestly can't believe I let him sweet-talk me into being my attorney. I'm an amateur landlord, and I thought hiring an "experienced" eviction lawyer would help me navigate a stressful situation. Instead, he took advantage of me the same way my tenant had been doing for years. From day one, things went downhill after I sent my first retainer installment. Once he got my money, he became almost impossible to reach. Calls were routed through an answering service, and every time I managed to get him on the phone, he rushed me off within 15 minutes -- often sighing, sucking his teeth, and reminding me he "doesn't care" and that it's "my decision what to do." That is not what you want to hear from someone you've just paid thousands of dollars to represent you. After paying him more than $3,000, I expected at least some level of courtesy and communication. Instead, he dismissed me and my family as if we were nothing. He even tried to debate how much I had actually paid him, completely disregarding the thousands I had already given. To make matters worse, his own typographical error on the court application delayed my case by a month, costing me an additional $1,600 in state taxes. And yet, he acted as if he was doing me a favor and had "waived" his fees, when the reality is his mistakes were costing me. Some of the most outrageous moments: Before trial, he told me repeatedly that he "doesn't care what happens" and that "if you don't like it, you can release me and get a new attorney tomorrow." He actually said to me: "Don't be a landlord. It costs a lot of money to be one, so don't do it." I had already paid him thousands, and this was the advice I was getting. He told me to "just leave the guy alone" when I asked about storage, as if I was the aggressor and my tenant -- who was living rent-free in my home -- was the victim. He filed my sheriff's eviction request late (two days after I gave him the fee), which landed on a weekend and then a holiday, gifting my nightmare tenant an extra 3 days in my house to cause damage. Despite me asking, he failed to tell me in advance that I would be responsible for paying the tenant's movers and one month of storage. I only found out days before the eviction, and the bill came to well over $5,000. Ironically, my squatter ended up with a better moving service than I use for myself. He insisted eviction records and credit impacts are "myths," and pushed settlement. But what's the point of an eviction if it doesn't deter horrible tenants? I thought this process would put something on my tenant's record, yet my tenant walked away scot-free while I lost tens of thousands of dollars. And here's where it gets even worse: my tenant actually admitted on video that he personally knew my lawyer, since they worked in the same building. That's not speculation -- that's a fact. Knowing this, it's hard not to question why my lawyer consistently acted in ways that benefited my tenant, even if indirectly. Whether intentional or not, the result was the same: my tenant got to stay in my house longer, cost me more money, and walked away with more than he ever should have. Throughout the entire case, Matthew Tannenbaum gave my tenant every advantage while treating me -- his paying client -- with disrespect and neglect. He was more of a salesman than an advocate. You'll get more useful advice from strangers on Reddit than from him. I have every receipt and proof to corroborate this bad experience. If challenged, I can back up every claim I've made here. If you value your time, money, and sanity, avoid Matthew Tannenbaum at all costs. Save yourself the stress and go with someone who will actually have your back, not your tenant's.
