Their lessons are great! All the staff members are nice. They accommodate to all skill levels and have so many opportunities to play with others. The lesson time and band time each week is just enough to learn and practice all the songs. read more

I was pretty disappointed in the overall experience. The owner's two children attended this camp. Her daughter got the lead singer role. That seemed a little nepotistic to me especially since others wanted to sing, and didn't get the chance. My daughter wanted to play guitar, but someone else got to do that. She said that boy couldn't play bass so she had to play it. The owner told me she picked it. That wasn't true. She also wanted to sing and didn't get to in the performance, even back up. It's fine, I get my kid can't get everything they want to, but it was $500 bucks, and she should have gotten first choice on something. Further, it's late June, and she made all the kids wear masks. The ENTIRE TIME. Now, I get masks, fine. However, the Governor lifted the mask mandate #1. #2, again, fine wear masks but the "photo shoot" pictures were with all the kids in masks. Also, they wore masks during the performance and the video they took had them all in masks. You couldn't see their faces. I wore a mask gladly during the pandemic, but this seemed pretty egregious to me. I paid $500 for the week, and to have a performance video, and pictures with my kid in a mask was incredibly disappointing. I also had a bad taste in my mouth that her kids got to do what they wanted, and mine got the leftovers. Again, I get it, but not for that kind of money. You're at the mercy of the owner, and her bias. Unprofessional and a big disappointment. read more

Super grateful to have stumbled on this gem. Admittedly, it took a lot of time to hear back after submitting my initial request for more information, but once we were in the door, we have nothing but positive experiences. I learned to play drums in a very traditional way: rudiments and repetition. This method is not that. It's much more casual, it reminds me of jam sessions, and watching my 5-year-old fall in love with music each week makes me trust the process. Robert, the program director, has the best vibe with the kids and parents, and is quick to help with any information or resources. The owners have a calm presence in what could be a chaotic situation! We've done classes and camp, and would recommend it to anyone thinking of introducing their kids to non traditional music lessons! read more

Despite what the other reviews may say, this is a great place to learn an instrument. Everybody is nice here, and I get to learn the songs I want. I am an intermediate player by this point, and I thank thank SoR for that. :) read more

Our 15yo son has been having a great time with classes, rehearsals, performances, and a camp since he started attending here nine months ago. He started out on vocals, but has since learned guitar and bass, and has explored drums a little. He has stuck with bass and some vocals in the two end-of-season performances his band has given so far, and SoR has been able to score some cool venues -- including the amphitheater at the Museum of Art. Great experience for a bunch of kids to go through! The entire experience has opened a whole new world for our son, and we are excited to see him growing so much as a rock musician. read more

It has taken me a few months to decide to write the review for Raleigh School of Rock. I was hesitant to leave a poor, albeit honest, review, because I felt bad for the business owners. However, I decided to let others know about my experience with this establishment. I first learned about School of Rock through friends; our friend's daughter goes to one in Chapel Hill. I was thrilled when the Raleigh location opened. I was excited for my two boys to attend. They play piano and drums. I was mostly excited about the opportunity for them to play music with other people. From my experience (I dabble in guitar), it's much harder to play with other musicians. The problems started right off the bat. 1. The teaching method that the school uses, "The School of Rock Method" is based on an app that the kids are supposed to use for practice. Well, not ONE of the teachers, or owners, has a clear idea of how to use it proficiently. It's like they are trying to learn it along with the kids. This, to me, is unacceptable. Example: the song that the kids were learning was in the certain musical key, as per the app. Turns out, when the the song was taught at the school, the teacher decided to change the key and transpose the music. With a different key, there was no way to practice the song at home. After multiple attempts to try and get the music in correct key, I gave up. Michelle, one of the owners, does not know how to do that. 2. The school does not assign homework. This MIGHT work for some kids, but I really don't see how one can learn music without practice. My kids came to the school with some experience, but their skills started to deteriorate almost as soon as they started. 3. To my knowledge, non of the teachers at the school hold musical degrees. Maybe the owner has some musical background, but I'm not sure. At the end of our time there, I decided to take some guitar lessons for myself, with Chris, who teaches guitar and drums. I was absolutely shocked to learn that Chris, who is also a "musical director" there, has never studied music theory! He DOES NOT know how to read music! He did not know the difference between a music staff and guitar tab. Yup, that's the musical director for you. In addition, while being the official drum instructor, he admitted to me that he was currently in the process of teaching himself the drums. There were many, many more problems with this place. I don't have time to write a novel. Just know that if you enroll your kid in this place you will be wasting your money. For the price they are charging I expect my kid to receive a very good quality musical education. You will not get that. You will get to drop off your kid at a sort of musical camp, where all the adults have no idea what they are doing. read more

We absolutely love it here at the School of Rock in Raleigh. The staff, vibe, energy, is all amazing. The school is phenomenal. Our kids love coming, we never have to beg them to go to their lessons, they are in the car faster than we are. They've learned a ton very quickly, but also they've formed really amazing friendships with their band mates, have learned to play together and work as a team, and have really grown in their confidence level in such a short amount of time. They started very shy and now it's just so amazing seeing them "find themselves" through music and friendships and perform with their band mates. If you want Suzuki or old school individual approaches, maybe try something different. But we tried all that and the kids were turned off. School of Rock gets them learning AND having fun, which is the secret to getting them focused and sticking with it. I highly, highly, highly recommend the School of Rock!!! read more
