McGinty Auction House is run by a young woman named Justine and her family. It is a small, locally…read moreowned business in the Clinton area- and one that I'm always happy to support. You can tell the small group of employees are a tight-knit group that really do always try to put their best foot forward. I've looked through the items this auction house offers multiple times and I'm always really impressed with their array. They have everything from furniture to home décor to tools to lawn equipment to gardening supplies to toys and games and collectables. Literally everything. Whether you love antiques, resell items, or want something new for your home at a ridiculously affordable price; this is the place to get it. They hold auctions weekly and are always very professional in the way they handle everything. Everything is clearly and neatly displayed and pictures are even posted on their Facebook group so you can get an idea of everything they are offering and decide if there are items you'd like to bid on up for grabs. Most auction houses now-a-days are still a bit 'old school' so I REALLY appreciate the fact that they advertise a lot of their items online so I can get a fair idea of what they are offering before I make the trip to Clinton. I haven't seen any other auction house that also posts great high-quality photos of their items online. I've discussed with Justine about her selling my items, and she's been very honest with me about the way she does business and has offered me her services in a fair manner. Compared to other auction houses I've spoken with, McGinty Auctions definitely has the friendliest reps and they're always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty in ensuring all of my questions are answered, and my concerns are addressed. Every time I call they pick up their phone and they're more than happy to talk me through everything. Whether you're looking to sell a lot of your old things, or you want to bid on some new things- this auction house is by far the best in the Illinois / Iowa area. I've been to a few different auction houses and this one always stands out as the one that offers the best service, the most diverse array of items, and the best prices. They have A LOT of furniture that can be upcycled for a profit- and also a ton of great items to sell on eBay. Totally worth visiting when you have some spare change to spend. There's always a treasure to be found here!

Reschedule was necessary due to life-threatening weather conditions. Not a single walkway, drive or entry had been plowed on the new pick up day. Seemed very unprofessionals and ill-equipped to be offering internet auction options. Item descriptions were not accurate, many items were damaged and unusable without disclosure. images did not match titles.& more

This is an absolutely atrocious auction site, you name me one single auction house in the whole…read morecountry that takes 50% from the sellers plus I don't even tell you about that in advance you're just tricked into it... Their photos are horrible and if you happen to be some fool that buys something up there you better cross your fingers and hope that it's there when you go to pick it up... I would not drive very far if I were you.. I have been going to auctions and estate sales for over 25 years and I have never seen a company this horrible or rude in my whole life.. Do yourself a favor, don't do it... As a buyer or a seller stay far away

As I've mentioned in previous reviews, it really takes a lot for me to leave a 1-star review. It's…read moreactually much harder to write such a review and this may be my longest review to date, but here it goes... Sunday evening, August 9, 2020, a close family member of mine purchased about $160-ish worth of merchandise (consisting of 16 or 18 different lots; if you aren't familiar with auction lingo a 'lot' is an individual item or very often a group of items) from one of Sharpless's online auctions. She's done this several times before. Everyone goes to bed Sunday night and all is well. The next afternoon, August 10, derecho 2020 hit eastern Iowa. Auction item(s) pickup was to happen on Monday, August 10 from 9am-6pm at the Sharpless Auctions facility on Herbert Hoover HWY in Iowa City. Here's where the situation goes south: much of eastern Iowa was without phone service, or the ability to gain internet access for several days. This also must have included the phone line(s) at Sharpless Auctions. It was late morning, Tuesday, August 11 before we spoke with anyone regarding the (since passed) auction pick-up date/time. Sharpless said that they understood my family member's situation, but they "still have a business to run" and gave us a deadline to pick-up the winning items that afternoon, or they could resell the items for us and send us a check. Because we were inundated with having to help multiple family members clear debris from their yards, driving from Cedar Rapids to Iowa City was not an option on the 10th or 11th. Sharpless did resell the items we bought. We ended up getting a check for less than $70. Ridiculous. Some of the lots we had purchased separately were shoved together in the new sale, and nearly all of the items sold for less than what we paid (totally understandable, but couldn't you at least keep the lots separated like they were originally?) To top it ALL off, Sharpless keeps a 30% commission. I think what irritated me the most was that Sharpless never even acknowledged the severity of the storm on 08/10. The next day, on 08/11, they made a post indicating they were pausing the 08/10 auction. Why? Because a huge part of their audience was without power and cell service. That was it. No heartfelt post to their customers who experienced such devastation. They never attempted to call us to find out where we were (it would have been noticeable that the amount of items we bought hadn't been picked up yet) or if we were going to make it at all. Had we not contacted them we would have just lost the money and the merchandise. So, when the employee said, "we still have a business to run" she wasn't kidding. There's no sympathy from anyone at Sharpless. They've lost a couple of customers who purchased from them regularly over the past few months. If you have the auction itch, I highly recommend searching elsewhere in eastern Iowa. There are several other very reputable auctioneers in the area.

The auctioneer and the item displays are fine. But letting…read morepeople sit in chairs and on stools right at the table is ridiculous. They park themselves well before the sale starts, and WON'T MOVE so you can look things over! They act like you are trying to take food off the plate in front of them if you try to see around them. Then,if you happen to be standing at the next table, where they seem to think they own the spot, they will shove their stool/chair up against you until you move! Unbelievable rude people shopping this auction. I don't think we will attend again until this practice is stopped. Regulars or not, they are hurting business. Ask them at the food trailer, they hear complaints constantly.

They did my grandfather's estate about…read morea year ago and were very professional and accomodating and very respectful of my family's belongings. I'd recommend them for anyone needing an auction of an estate. Going to their facility is always a treat. The building is nothing to look at (and I will say their parking lot is sometimes scary in the winter. I'm terrified of ice and sometimes I've seen some areas that could do with salt) but it doesn't need to be fancy to accomplish what they do. If I had one complaint it would be they should try to find some way to make parking better. On "big" auction days you can end up parking on the side of the road a block away. They always have things laid out nicely so you can see everything clearly and do their best to keep things that belong together in the right spots. The auctioneer is usually the same guy, Tyler, and he is very good at what he does. His helpers hold up items, bring them to you to look at closer if you missed it the first time around, and will gladly separate something out if you want to bid individually instead of having it as part of a lot. They always start up things like chainsaws or lawn mowers so you can see them run and will tell you if something isn't working and they will tell you if something is damaged. They seem to know a lot about different things (like what the collectibles are and what's worth the big bucks) Best of all, they will let the crowd know if they're getting too rowdy and loud and tell people to go outside if they're just going to stand there and make noise.
