I am still amazed that the amazing museums in london are for free. It is something that anyone must definitely take advantage of. The Science museum is huge and it can take more than two days to see everything in proper detail. I have been there more specifically in the Mathematics gallery. It does not take long to see this gallery, (about 45 min) although I am no good with numbers I enjoy seeing all the shapes and forms numbers can create. It is a universal language, it is an exact science. On display you can see ellipses, polygons, polyhedra, sliceforms, topological surfaces and even a very large model of a slide rule in which you can practice getting your own sums right! If you are interested in understanding what exactly the above terminology means you must wander over to south kensington. If some of the subjects above are of no interest for you then there is another thing which is more everyone's cup of tea. The IMAX 3D is a must! I went to see Fly me to the Moon 3D, it is the exciting adventure of three flies that go into outer space in the Apollo 11 mission (the one that landed on the moon). It very funny, educational and its in 3D, so cool! It's only £7.50 for adults and £6.00 for children and students. read more

I did not enjoy science at school. The only fond memories I have are of practical lessons and attempting to see how many strange colours and puffs of smoke you could create with your chemicals. However, now I've grown up a bit I deeply regret not paying more attention. Science has recently provided me with more awe-inspring moments than any work of fiction ever could. For instance did you know that the static on the television when it isn't tuned correctly holds a signall from the big bang, an explosion that happened 4000 billion years ago? That's some crazy shit. Along with my newfound love of science I've taking to frequenting the British home of science in the form of the Science Museum in South Kensington. Like its neighbour The Natural History Museum it provides entertainment and knowledge to people of all ages and features interactive and less interactive features to get your teeth into. The Science Museum has a wealth of different attractions but its main galleries are Making the Modern World, featuring a whole host of engineering marvels, Exploring Space, a favourite with the kids (and myself), and the Energy Hall, which holds an array of steam engines which helped power the industrial revolution. Other features of the Museum include a coffe shop/cafeteria for mum and dad to relax. A word of warning - don't come on a bank holiday unless you want to be awallowed by wave upon wave of screaming children. Bear this in mind and I guarantee and fun and informative outing. read more

The museum was nice. It's filled with a lot of information, though the only thing I can say is that it felt as if it was merely designed for young children (not so much for adults). The only part I really enjoyed was the Mathematics, Information Age, Astronomy, and Cyphering areas. Those I believe should be the only ones anyone should go to. The rest is just fluff. Of all the museums in London, this one was the one I was looking forward to the most. Sad to say that I was very disappointed. There weren't very many interactive exhibits and the building was large and confusing.. Every floor has a different theme to it, but as you go up the stairs, there's less to see. After walking around for about an hour, I got pretty bored. There are a few displays worth seeing, though. There's this cool holographic globe which shows you satellite images of the earth. The trains and engine displays were pretty fascinating. Overall, if you have a short amount of time in London, visit other museums. This one is mediocre, in my opinion. read more

It is a place that I have visited so many times and still will go back and spend few hours there. It is also accommodating a brilliant IMAX cinema that shows 3D scientific films. Great place to take the kids, especially to the launch pad facility, where they can learn and have fun until their hearts are content. I find machines and stuff a bit boring, but the exhibit with all the globes and scientific instruments from the 17th and 18th century was really interesting - they really did make the most mundane tools look really elegant! The science museum is right next door to the natural history museum and is also free. This is a massive building on about 5-6 levels of floorspace. A great museum for children, but also for big kids too! The most interactive museum I think i've ever been in. Highlights for me included seeing a V2 rocket, Stephensons Rocket, space pod, some of the very first computers and even a trashed Mika Hakkinen formula one car! In the lower basement levels there is a house of the past exhibition with lots of household items from the 50's & 60's Maybe it's a sign of getting older that there's a BBC Microcomputer amongst them ! Two words of warning - it can become very busy with schoolchildren on school trips & the walk out of the underground station to reach the museum is just about the longest I think there is! read more

Get your Geek on!! And do it for FREE! (Well, you have to pay for the IMAX Theatre bit and other special exhibits but there's plenty to see without paying for these). Yup, this is another of London's great free museums. It felt a bit awkward upon entering: they can sometimes check your bags but as you go through the entrance barriers someone asks if you'd like to donate and/or buy a brochure so I felt bad for saying no. I suspect they embarrass/confuse some people into paying to enter. There's so much to see, whether you're a steampunk, budding biologist or a space cadet! Be prepared to wade through lots of small humans (children) as this museum is really popular with those sorts. And you can't even avoid them during term time as schools tend to take large herds of small people there on day trips. Some of the exhibits made me feel old (and I'm only in my 30s!) because they featured toys and technology that I had as child! But it was a lovely trip down memory lane. There's tons of interactive stuff so push passed those kids and have a go yourself! My friend and I did, although we seemed to have timed it just right and managed to enter the 'Launchpad' area just as a school group were leaving! Between the two of us we managed to build a bridge, and it was strong enough to stand on. This is quite an impressive feat considering the instructions said you needed three people! Beware! In the 'Launchpad' area there's one interactive exhibit that makes an almighty BANG and I swear the other visitors kept setting if off just to hear the different noises I made in surprise! The lifts seemed a bit confusing at this museum as some only go to certain floors but, as one 'helpful' staff member said, "Feel free to use the stairs over there!" The toilets we used were clean and we were impressed with the funky taps! There's several different cafes but also a picnic area (which is inside) so don't be afraid to take a packed lunch. We just ate our sandwiches on a bench in one of the exhibit halls. They have a large gift shop with all sorts of sciencey goodies! And the prices range from cheap pocket money stuff to expensive gadgets, so everyone can come away with a souvenir. I got a squashed one pence coin with a imprint of the Apollo 10 capsule on it (you pay a pound then use the machine to squish the penny yourself - I love these things!). To conclude, go. Just go. This museum targets revenue more heavily than Natural History next door. As I love science I have to take a star off for its emphasis on revenues. Exhibitions cost money, the 3D rides cost money, the greeters ask for your donation--this isn't your typical London museum. It's got tons of artifacts, from the very small watches and gears to huge machines, boats and a missile, and presents their histories nicely. The gift shop is good, though, with a paper airplane boomberang a must-see. read more

We had a super neat-o time! On the way in we had a most interesting conversation with the attendant at the steam engine display. The 3D IMAX film on the Hubble was educational and entertaining. Picked up a little quelque chose at the gift shop, too. Entrance to the museum is via donation, but they are more aggressive about extracting that from you than at the National Portrait Gallery. Here, you have to go past a human with a cash register, so you are shamed into contributing. There is a charge for the IMAX films. Be sure to check out the orrery display. read more

I desperately want to love this place - my father designed a machine that used to be an exhibit here, so I've always been really fond of it. I went along to see the Large Hadron Collider exhibition and I was half pleased, half disappointed. We sat down for a video (scientists meeting) at the beginning, and it really didn't tell us anything. I realise that I have a head start with understanding the LHC and what it does, but still - 20 minutes on how three people felt the morning of the unblinding of the Higgs results was waaaay too much. However, once we were released to go through and see the display, it was pretty interesting. I had never seen the detectors, so that was very cool. (In a really nerdy way!) We then went up to the IMAX cinema to see the 3D film 'Hidden Universe', which again didn't tell me much more than I already know, but was a lot of fun to see. We also went to the exhibition 'Who am I?" which was FULL of interactive quizzes, games and information - absolutely amazing for children (and pretty good fun for adults too!) The biggest problem with the museum is that there are still large swathes that are just really old. TIP: At the shake bar on the third floor. Loads of amazing ice cream and toppings. Cheekily asked if I could steal a malteser to go with my coffee. Grumpy chap told me I had to pay 70p for five. That seems rather a mark up!! (I declined!) read more

This was my first time returning to the Science Museum since I was a school kid and boy, has it changed! I almost didn't recognise the place. It wasn't in black and white for starters!...I jest of course, I'm not *quite* that old. We came here on this occasion for the Cosmonauts: Birth of The Space Age exhibition. It's only here until the 13th March 2016 so we wanted to catch it before it went away. Although the actual Science Museum is fabtastically FREE this exhibition was ticketed and cost £14. I have to say I thought it was worth it. The exhibits & space shiz they have on display here is mindblowing and how often do you get an opportunity to get that up & personal with an actual satellite or Russian spacecrafts/capsules?! Brilliant. They layout and the way everything was displayed here was excellent. The lighting was especially fantastic, giving everything that eerie space glow and shine... If you're a fan of anything to do with space, space travel, dogs in space (Laika!) or just funky, cool engineering and fabulous posters (the posters are ace) then this exhibition is certainly for you. Oh, I must warn you: they have some really good space related souvenirs in the shop. I did go a tad crazy...oops. The Science Museum itself is also great. It's really easy to get here; we got the Underground to South Kensington and from there its a wee 5/10 minute walk along a tunnel underground, which is perfect if it's cold or raining. This tunnel also has the entrance to the V&A Museum as well so very handy for all you museum lovers. If you've never been and you are at all ,even slightly interested in science (or the world/universe & the things that inhabit it) then I urge you to check this place out. Did I mention it's FREE! If you're a geek - you'll love it! Seriously though, I could spend hours here, before being dragged away kicking and screaming like a child - my poor girlfriend! She had to put up with me in geek heaven looking at all the cool stuff and then making sure I have'nt missed anything by checking it out again. It still amazes me that this place is free and well done to London for getting that right - so many schools come here from all over the country, its great to be able to be involved and interact with so much technology. I can't imagine London without it's science museum - in my opinion it really puts it in the top museums in the world - without question. read more

Being a geek and a scientist, I looked foward to my latest visit to the Science Museum but I was sorely disappointed. I just felt that they didn't fully utilise the space effectively. i tried to see the place through the eyes of a child and I didn't find it an inspiring visit. Not enough interactive exhibits. Quite dull in my book and I felt doubly disappointed as it was to have been the highlight of my visit to 'museum row'. At least it was free. Mind your head? I was blown away... in the Exploring Space gallery. "It's human nature to stretch, to go, to see, to understand. It's not a choice, really. It's an imperative" (Michael Collins, Gemini 10/Apollo 11) To stretch: I was with a father and his son on the Flight 360 simulator exploring the virtual sky. For a moment, we thought to fly above 8km/sec in order to escape the Earth... To go: whether in the Flight gallery or the Modern World gallery, we were never alone. The volunteer guides were full of energy and vivid stories making our journey fun and memorable. Some of my favourites are the oldest locomotive, the Puffing Billy, Stephenson's Rocket, Ford Model T, Lockheed Electra, and the Apollo 10 Capsule. To see: Hubble 3D IMAX not only made our eyes dazzle, but also make our hearts pump. 30+ lives stood by ready to sacrifice in order to save Hubble. The Glimpses of Medical History gallery has the detailed models of the important moments. I was surprised to find out how real the old operating theatre and the pharmacy store look with the actual ones in London. To understand: Who am I? is the new exhibition integrating modern technology. The interactive website has lot to explore (http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/who_am_i_intro.aspx). I'm proud to say that my mentee was part of the planning team as she did her summer internship with the museum. The giant light catcher, mirror from the great Rosse's telescope in the 1850s, reflects our exciting moments, childhood, time at MIT, and much more beyond imagination. On a sunny Saturday in London, I decided to take a bit of a walk with only my keys, iPhone on armband with headphones, and ID in tow... and I ended up in the Science Museum. Hooooomg, it's fantastic in there. Seriously, it's free. Not like the V&A where it's freeeeeeee, but not if you want to see any of the special stuff! It's free. Even all the special exhibits are free. Okay, sure. If you want IMAX, you'll pay. But whatevs. You guys, the Apollo 10 Command Module is there. That ALONE was worth the trip for my geeky NASA nerd self. But there's so much more stuff! LOTS OF STUFF! There are rockets and cars and Vespas and engines and boats and computers and moon rocks, the London Philharmonia's Universe of Sound where I got to play a triangle and tambourine (yes, even 31-year-olds love banging on percussion), and a whole area called "Who am I?" that you can mess around in for a good, long while and find out that you, as you've always suspected, have man hands. A fun stop on any family tour. Lots of reading on the first floor and not so much interactive exhibits, travel up to floor two for more hands on exhibits. Hidden gems on the top floors; History of Medicine and Medical Scenes. I was feeling a bit let down by the science center and on a whim discovered the top two floors. Tucked away about the flight experience (total tourist trap) you'll find the Health Matters exhibit. If you have small children this might be your last stop on the top floors unless they will tolerate some reading from you. The glimpse into medical scenes is amazing. View medical scenes dating back to cavemen through 1986 complete with mannequins and tools. While this exhibit is a little outdated it's not gory and it's extremely educational. If you did bring little ones along skip the corner that starts with the caveman diorama - it gets a bit gory in there. History of Medicine is on the floor above and it's fantastic. Not the usual flashy exhibit this one contains loads and loads of older medical equipment in glass case after case after case. Allow a good hour to scan this floor. It's much smaller but you can't beat the items and information. Amazing! Another exhibit not to miss is the ships. Mostly ignored in the reading material about the museum this wing is chock full of models of the worlds most notable ocean liners and the like. Really a gem of an exhibit for sure. Again, not full of bright colors so might be tough to keep the kids engaged. Also on that side of the museum are the Math and Computer exhibits. Not my thing but a nerd convention for sure. The IMAX theatre is decent and the shows are short. If you're on a budget you might want to skip these - not enough bang for the buck. I saw Deep Sea and was mildly impressed. Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet narrate the film. Why couldn't they get Leo? Right outside the IMAX is the Welcomme Center. Worth a peek around for sure. I had already had my fill of screaming kids so I didn't look too closely. All in all a great museum. My favorite in London? No, definitely not but free and educational. At the time of writing the tube exit was closed. Head on up the V&A tunnel and you can exit to the street and get to the Science Museum that way. read more

I recently visited the Science Museum solely to see their new Wounded: Conflict, Casualties and Care exhibition, commemorating the Battle of the Somme. The Science Museum itself (especially the engine and space room) was heaving with children - and it was only Tuesday at 4pm - however the exhibition (which is free of charge) was much quieter. The exhibition, as the name suggests, focuses on the medicine and treatments used during WW1 and how these changed as the war went on due to different fighting techniques (gas/shrapnel/explosives). It is a very sobering read but a brilliant tribute to the extraordinary things they experienced of which people still go through today. Throughout the exhibition there are a vast amount of things on display including a huge collection of medical instruments used at the time, photos of conditions and symptoms and quotes and diary entries from officers/medics. A must visit! read more

I would say this was one of the better museums within London. It was free with the London Pass. It's a nice museum and quite large. It had a great mix of exhibits that interest kids as well as adults. Great mix of practically everything science related and has about 4-5 floors of exhibits and things. I think we started on the top floor which has a lot of things you can touch and turn and spin and move. At the time the top floor was about sexuality, personality traits, and basically getting to know yourself & you body type exhibits. Then we moved onto the exhibits on aviation and transportation. There is a really nice flow and progression from old ways to new ways within most of the areas. I'm really amazing at the layout and how well they fit all this stuff in one museum. The quality of all the items is top notch as well. Everything is well maintained. I could go on and on about each area, but I would just say to take your time, if time allows, and just read everything. There are exhibits on space, electricity, power, transportation, medicine, climate, genetics, aviation, telecommunications, computers and cellular technology and so much more. So you better wear good walking shoes. read more

This is a review on THE BLUE CAFE. It is the Science Museum cafe we went to when we were there. Unfortunately, I wouldn't go back. We went on the weekend and we ended up there at around 2:30pm. The tables were not all full but we had to wait quite a while to get seated (even though we saw waiters standing around talking to each other). Most of the food was already gone. There was a special Kids Eat Free which we weren't told about. The waiters took for ever to take our order and when it arrived they forgot to give us our cutlery or drinks. We had to ask several times for both. The food also wasn't spectacular but we weren't expecting that. If I go back again I definitely wont go back to the Blue Cafe read more

So I've been here twice -- once for the monthly adult night, and the other as a volunteer trip with some kids from an academy. The adult night was actually really fun -- things are set up in the museum, rather than having things set up around what's in it. They had free oyster samplings in the cafe, everything was open up as it would normally, but there were special rooms set up: wallace and gromit milkshake-making session, a lecture on sexual relations, speed-dating, silent disco, and a dj/dance floor at the launch pad. I think this takes place every second or third wednesday of the month, so i would recommend checking it out for a different experience. When i went with the kids, it was a lot more boring... for me. The IMAX shows were really cool, but everything does seem a little bland, although the kids loved the launch pad room. It wouldn't hold my attention for that long, but it's worth popping by. read more

I'll preface this by saying that the bulk of my enjoyment here has been on one of their smlate events. Everything seems to be well set out for their late night events - and whilst the alcohol stopped being served earlier than I appreciated (at the same time as the silent disco - I wanted moar drink after that, damnit!), it's understandable that they kinda wanted rid of us. The staff I spoke to seemed pretty nice - and even put up with my trying to convince them to open things for us, or let us queue jump, etc. During the days, I remember as a kid kinda being a bit bored of the place. As someone else said, there's a lack of real interactivity to really draw in the young'uns. Not an issue in the late events, as the whole point is you're AVOIDING the kids, but they're a relatively small part of what the museum does/open times. Alas! All in all, it does what it does well, and the lates are worth going to, so I really can't fault it. read more

Further, you'll find an old cars collection, locomotives, an up-to-scale plane and so much more. It's my favorite room after the space one. On the first, second and third floor, you enter an interactive world : games, computers, seminars on screens, imax. There's something for everyone. Most importantly : the science museum is free. Geek heaven. When I walk into the huge, dark room with the rockets and moon landing crafts on the walls, I feel 8 again. That one room is the essence of the Science Museum for me. But we all grow up. This place is great for adults - interesting exhibitions and the *amazing* science museum lates and perfect for kids too - take any surly toddler down to the interactive area and watch them melt with excitement. It's just brilliant. Living in London means I can occasionally come for an hour on a weekday and avoid the crowds and not feel like I've got to see every, single, last exhibit. read more

So much to do and see, both for adults and kids. It can get really busy at weekends, but even so you are still able to enjoy the exhibits. Cafe queues can be quite long, as can waiting for lifts. Love the Science museum and still remember visiting as a kid. Huge space and tons to see and mostly very interesting and informative for young ones and older ones. They've added an Imax and have lots of interactive stuff for young kids which is popular although for me, maybe because I am older but seemingly for the kids too, some of the more classic exhibits are still the best. The aeronautical gallery on the 3rd floor is still great and hasn't changed in years. I'm sad they removed the original deltic locomotive from the basement along with much of the big machinery that used to be there. There's more focus now on the digital age. We were keen to see the new information age gallery. They've used some of the original exhibits and added new ones to bring up to date. Doesn't seem that long ago since I owned an original Apple mac, now a museum piece and looks like something from another age.The flow and progression wasn't that clear and seems a bit haphazard and some of the video displays have clearly been made to emphasize the human story and less on the actual technology which is a pity (it's supposed to be about the technology) Some of the voiceover was trite, lacking in actual pictures and video, just weird vaguely molecular visuals and made it less interesting than it could have been. The Welcome museum medical history exhibit is almost hidden away on a secret 4th and 5th floor and hardly visited but very comprehensive and interesting. - Small gripe on the picnic area / cafe on the 3rd floor. We visited at noon and already packed with parents and kids. Not enough tables and chairs on a week day (can only imagine the weekend) and the cafe itself is a franchise operation selling overpriced lattes, cappuccinos and other fancy sounding frothed milk drinks and 'aranciana' or 'limoncello' cans of juice. We just wanted a simple cup of tea or a straight filter coffee and kids just want simple juice. Not so easy to find just 'coffee' or a pot of tea anymore. read more

With London's unreliable weather it is a good thing that its museums are free, my favourite has always been the Science Museum. In contrast the V&A has always been a little too artsy for my taste and the Natural History Museum is not as interesting. Due to it being free the museum is always packed out especially at weekends, I like the exhibits on the ground floor especially the items from the 1990s which remind me of my childhood. If you only have time for one museum in South Ken, make it this one. read more

In comparison to the V&A museum, and to the Glasgow Science Museum, this isn't a stand out place for me. I suppose in fairness, the one in Glasgow is a Science Centre, so there is a lot more interactive things at the Glasgow one, whereas here it's a lot of displays. It is still a fascinating place. There's scale replicas of various spacecrafts and other wonderful space related things, there's models of trains and engines and there's a hell of a lot of science. The only thing about this museum out of the 3 main ones is that it's absolutely filled to the brim with children, as it's probably the most child friendly of the three, and with a museum full of screaming children, you're going to eventually end up with a sore head. I didn't spend very long in here for that exact reason. read more

This is the most fun place in London. I am so glad it exists. I liked it as a kid, and I love it even more now. There are just so many things you can play with, and everyone's ok with it. From the toilet flush demonstration (poop! poop! poop! I love that piece of POOP in the toilet!) to the giant differential and integral calculus calculator, the Science Museum has something eye-catching/fun for everyone at every age. The differential calculator actually made me appreciate linear algebra and the fundamentals of physical mechanics, and I used to hate physics with a passion. The museum has put so much thought and care into every exhibit (cough* cough* unlike Natural History Museum), even 5 stars can't do it justice. Definitely the best place to go when you feel like exploring! *Here's a little bonus for doctors and dentists: The top floor of the museum has an exhibit dedicated just to medicine. Go check it out! It made me want to break the glass, and steal all the 17th century dental instruments. read more

This is my least favorite museum I visited in London. There is a long exhibit running around an entire floor focused on developing technology in the 20th century and how London used technology through wars, there are some good stuff there but it is mostly tedious. I am giving it four stars instead of three because: A) This is a great place for kids, B) it is free, C) They do adult nights once a month which completely changes the dynamic of the whole place! If you are an adult i wouldn't recommend going during the daytime (except as a family trip) instead go during the adult night and have a great time read more

Now one of my favorite museums as we can bring all ages and everyone pretty much has something to entertain them. My we brought kids aged 7, 12, and 15. Each had a sections that were interactive and educational...and fun. The food in the cafe was not pure junk food but had real options, though museum prices. I could spend weeks in London ogling exhibits at old medical museums. There is just so much medical history here, I am at a loss for words. As a student of public health, I had to visit. It didn't disappoint, especially given that it was free. London museums are the best. read more
