The Ranelagh Multi Denominational National School is groundbreaking and remarkable for a plethora…read moreof reasons. When they decided to close the St. Columba's Church of Ireland National School in 1988, a two teacher denominational outfit, the parents and teachers banded together to re-launch the school as a democratically run, multi denominational and co-educational national school, a pretty far thinking ethos for schooling when the plans were written in 1988. The new school was originally housed in a collection of prefabs, a church hall and a caretakers house. A type of early nineties hedge school in some ways. The Department of Education granted backdated recognition for the school in 1989. The new building was designed by O'Donnel and Tuomey architects, these guys are big boys on the scene, and they did a top notch job. The design of the school has the contrivance of being 'internal and external spaces which interlock to make one block of interdependent components.' This, obviously, reflects the philosophy of the school quite succinctly and has made the school something of a landmark on Dublin's architectural scene. So, four stars for Ranelagh Multi Denominational National School, I can't vouch for quality of education, or anything practical like that, but the concept appeals to me greatly. Now make it a Gael scoil too, and I'll enrol all my future artsy, bleeding heart pinko progeny there tomorrow.

We have been down the childminder route and its a nightmare when it doesn't work out. the staff here are amazing, stephanie and beisha are legends. It's a little pricey but there are discounts for siblings, meals are included, they do full days when the schools are off, they don't charge for outings, you still get your government payment for the year before school. I'm told the after schoolers are getting a pet but that's an update for another day.

St. Matthew's is where I spent my formative years, aged five to eleven, and I have very fond…read morememories of the school. With a student population hovering around the 100 mark, the school was a small community rather than an institution. There were only four teachers to control us all, and two or three classes were thrown in together under the one teacher's supervision. We grew up through the ranks knowing everyone in the school, the young looked out for the old and we all played together in the playground at lunch. We had no uniform and received no religious education, girls had best friends who were boys and out of the 12 people in my own class I still see at least five of them on a regular basis, which must be a good sign almost 15 years on. Needless to say, I'm sure a lot has changed since my day. The school building has expanded outwards and upwards, and all of the staff have changed. But I still here good reports about the school, and it occupies a very special place in my heart.

This was the home of the Artane Boys & Artane Boys Band. Those children suffered unrelenting abuse;…read morephysical, psychological and sexual. The very ones entrusted to care for many of the countries orphans. Failed to protect those helpless children. The administration knew or should have know about the abuses those children endured. Few people know today the site of the orphanage. It's called St. David's. The name had changed & the school is no-longer a orphanage and in fact a thriving neighborhood school.
