But It's got a cool geometric shape like um, maybe, a rhombus? except THIS rhombus, is special because all sides have a corresponding parallel side!! but what does this nonstandard shape do in the dog park when that dog park also contains a vortex ? This is a large park with both a big and small dog section. A major concern for safety at this park because 1/2 the small dog section is full of overgrown fox tails and 1/4 of the large dog section has over grown fox tails. I am still pulling them out of the fluff in between my dogs toes. There is only one small wooden picnic table for seating and the table is at the end of its life. There are no trees so I wouldn't come here on a hot day. read more

The fence line runs right up against a bike jump park, and so any high prey-drive or anxious dog will definitely have no issue jumping the low fence (ask me how I know!). Went once without knowing that little tid-bit and found out the hard way when bikes suddenly started appearing out of nowhere. Definitely not designed by a high-drive dog owner, lol! That fence should be a couple feet higher, for sure. For the solid obedience dog or lower prey drive pup it's a great place; water available, big space, separated spots for small and large dogs. I wish it had grass, though!!! Would be a prime spot for later when my rescue girl is ready. read more

"Anything Goes" is how I usually describe Scotts Valley dog park. Its chaotic and trashy looking, honestly. New to dog park? I would not recommend that you start at this park. It is no secret - you either like Scotts Valley dog park or Aptos dog park, and the people who like one place are not too fond of the people at the other. We have been at SV dog park 20-30 times. We have been to 42 *other* dog parks in my dogs life and SV is not a favorite due to the weird things that happen. Easy to get to (just past P.O.), is next to the skate park, a covered area to stand under during rain or sun, fresh water (& big puddles of nasty water), a hose on both sides to wash dogs down. It is a big dog park, good dogs, nice people & most things work. Watch out for those who do not follow simple rules, nasty water and compromised fences. The design is okay, but if the people are not responsible it does not matter. I did talk to people about issues, but it appears that they are not the only ones so am also writing it here. Likes. I like all the tennis balls at the park that people leave. I like that the people provide pooper scoopers (not the city). I like plenty of parking. I like that is on the way to and from San Jose so we can take a break there. Not so much. I am not fond of the water pooling up and getting FUNKY. I am not fond of the double gate being shared with both dog sections. Not fond of the tractor gate not being locked in the all dog section. I do my share of cleaning but its trashy looking. I've seen people put their dogs into the park then SIT in their car. Today a guy left his dog here for 2-3 hours -- as in, he LEFT! Someone called the owner, he came & got the dog. People were letting dogs in/out of the side gate between the all dog section and small dog section which should not be available to be used (it is for tractors only). (I emailed the City, they put the lock back on the gate. Update - now its gone again? Really??) A big German Shepherd came in on leash into the LITTLE dog section (this violates the "leash rule" see below). They did it to use the little dogs hose because "the big section hose did not work". This was not true they simply did not close off the 2nd spout. I picked up my dog so he did not try to "play" with a big dog on a leash....who was bound to feel constricted and act on "the leash rule". One person gave my dog a treat without asking. Would you give someones child food without asking? That does happen at other dog parks but its not any less annoying. Today a lady brought her large Boxer into the little dog section so that her dog would not go into the huge puddle in the big section. She said he was gentle, but he was not. He was just a regular dog who was simply too big to play with 10 lb dogs. 10 lbs to 50 lbs is like 135 lbs to 675 lbs. All good intentions aside, the little ones are the ones to get hurt. My 14 lb'er could not use his back legs after friendly play with a black lab. I thought he broke his back. Another person brought in their Dalmatian who ended up launching my dog 4-5 feet into the air. My dog often plays with big dogs....but why were they even in the small dog section? There were mushrooms growing at the end of the little dog section. One lady's dog was fine the day before (I saw the dog) and the next day (yesterday) was at the vet for some unknown reason. Today I heard that another dog died last Christmas and the autopsy showed mushrooms in the dogs stomach. The mushrooms are not there today (3-3-2011) and heard someone eradicated them. Today two boys (8-10 yrs) were going ballistic in the big dog section. These boys were over the top. Throwing chairs at each other, hitting each other with wooden boards. Finally the father stopped them. WTF? Big dogs will bite kids doing stuff like that. Then there was the guy who got pissed off because I asked him to wait so I could grab my puppy before he went out the gate with the guy. The guy said: "I know how to operate a gate." I said: "Let me re-phrase that. Let me get my dog." Between the hole is in the fence due to something crashing into it and the gates not completely latching? Who in their right mind would hassle someone who does not want their puppy going out the gate w/ some stranger? The guy who was telling us all about how his woman stole his gun and was busted in Saratoga was pretty awesome. My friend who is black goes there....and says everyone leaves when he gets there. I could go on and on. I feel safe in the small dog section because it is controlled (people actually watch their dogs) but every time I go something dumb happens that never is an issue at Aptos dog park. Its obvious. I have outted myself. I am one of *those* people. (What is the "leash rule"? Don't have your dog on a leash inside a dog park when others are off leash. The one on the leash is looked at as being vulnerable, and the ones off leash will take advantage. Google it read more

My pup (11 month old choc lab) and I love the dog park. Pros: - plenty of room to run - great access to clean-up equipment... it's great not to have to use a plastic bag! score one for the environment.. - easy access to fresh drinking water and hose - easy to get to/lots of parking that feels "safe" - far from busy streets - fenced in "foyer" area, prevents dogs from getting away from you into the parking lot Cons: - several times I've experienced people just sitting and not paying attention to their dogs... sometimes smoking... their dogs behavior isn't monitored and they can be jumping up on people and other dogs (not in a fun, playful way, but in an annoying omg-pay-attention-to-me-now-pretty-pretty-please-my-owner-ignores-me kind of way) - dogs on the little dog side bark incessantly at the big dogs, for no apparent reason... owners do nothing to try to quiet them - not really much grass... muddy... (but it's outside, and a little mud never hurt anyone, i suppose) If you have kids (especially preschoolers or toddlers), please leave them at home when visiting the dog park... they may accidentally provoke the dogs or get knocked over by big dogs. I like Scotts Valley dog park, and so does my dog. The only reason I am giving it four stars is because it gets really muddy in the winter. That is the only downside, which isn't preventable. There seems to be a good size lake going on at the park now. The canopy that used to provide some protection has been ripped off, so that would be good to fix. One thing that I cannot stand about going here is the number of idiot parents who take their human children into the dog park, and the kids are running around. Not all dogs are socialized with children. Children are unpredictable and can be very intimidating to dogs. This is a DOG park NOT a children's park. Go take your bratty kids to the playground area. I don't feel comfortable with my dog being around running children, and it should not my job to monitor him around crazy children let alone a pack of dogs. Funny thing is that if my dog jumps on your kid and scratches him/her, I am at fault even though my pet is in a designated pet area!!!! Take your kids and get out of the fenced area. Rant over. Lastly, if you are a dog owner, don't plan on training your dog while taking him to the park. You can't be teaching your dog commands in the middle of a play zone and then get frustrated with dog owners. Yes, if you have treats in your hand, all dogs are going to run over to you and screw up your training. Anyway, this review is ending up being a critique of humans versus the park. I recommend going. I no longer bring my two pugs here: too many problems such as other people's dogs humping everything in sight, owners not paying attention to their dogs, aggressive big dogs in the small dogs area, and bad water (there is something in the water there that makes my dogs very sick). I witnessed one man who opened the gate and let the dogs out and then all these dogs were running around loose one the soccer fields and bolted their way into the Skypark neighborhood, K-mart shopping center and to the bus transit center. One dog darted out into traffic and was never seen again. Thank God my dogs are well trained. read more

First time dog owner and first time taking my rescue dog to this park. I was scared because our little guy (pup-teen age) likes animals but also likes to bark. The adults in the dog park made me feel comfortable and let their dogs smell ours before I lef him off the leash. After he was free, he was in dog heaven! I am biased because I have never been to another dog park before, but I did not have any problems with other agressive dogs or lazy dog owners. We enjoyed it so much that we went back the following day only to run into our neighbors and their dogs, so our dogs got a good chance to get to know each other. I've read to not use the dog park as exercise for our little man so I plan to take him on walks prior to going to the park so he can just enjoy his time with his new dog friends. *bark bark* I do bring my children with me as they are 11 and 13 and enjoy watching our new family member socialize with other dogs. I really enjoy this dog park. No it's not the prettiest dog park. But the humans and the dogs make up for it. At first I was weary but went as it s the only dog park in SLV. First time I went not many dog were there. Next time, same. But I loved how large the area for small pups is. After a few times and being there at more crowded times. I found what was charming. The people. They are very friend, caring, and understanding. If the people are that way so are the dogs. Everyone cleans up after their dogs seems to clean right away. The community donates chairs, balls, and other items. The large/ all dog area does get very playful at most times but there is SO my space for the play. The smaller dog area tend to have a bit calmer flow, but they have their play parties^.^ what is also nice for the small pups is there is a bit of grass in the back, mulch in the middle, and dirt in the front( keep in mind the small dog area has to be what about 30 feet x 100 feet big). So depending on your pups size and your concern for their paws there is a few surfaces to try. What I wish the park had maybe some ramps or tunnels. Just something to take up a little space and give the pups a few big things to play with. A tarp to put over the sitting area. But in my option these are things I am sure if asked for through the social network mean to the Community from all the people I have met and how much they care for the park and their pups. I know they would donate or make it happen! Visit this park not once but a few times and I know you will love it to! read more

I've taken my Australian Shepherd mix to the big dog area a number of times since last fall and I think we're both finally over it. Other reviews have already listed it's pros: access to clean-up equipment, clean, running water, big, open space for running, etc. These are all really great things, and if we didn't live in an area that didn't have access to such varied, awesome, dog-friendly places for exercising dogs, we would have gone more often. But more often then not, the cons outweigh the pros. I've met some awesome people/dogs here. I've also met some not-so-awesome, inattentive people who sit in one of the handful of plastic chairs scattered over the grounds and ignore their hyperactive/aggressive/stressed out doggies while they freak out or harass other people/dogs. Not fun, and, frankly, rude. The amount of poops scattered (and camouflaged by the mulch and bark ground cover) throughout the park is also testament to a problem with people not picking up after their pets. I guess it's a good last resort for a quick socialization/leg-stretching outing. But (and I think my dog would agree, here), I'd rather take my dog on an on-leash hike on Pipeline in Henry Cowell then go to the SV dog park. And compared to a trip down to Its Beach, or 6th Avenue Beach? Forget about it, there's no contest! read more

First time visit to this park with my 8 mo. old chihuahua pup and I probably won't be coming back. The only thing that's good about it is that there are separate areas for big and small dogs and a foyer area to unleash your dog in. I did not see any doggie bag posts anywhere and there is no grass in the field. The big dog side seemed better maintained than the small dog area cause there was more tanbark, the small dog area had mostly dirt and rocks and some tanbark thrown here and there. The "green" in the small dog side looked mostly like weeds and there were no benches to sit on just some cheap plastic chairs that looked really dirty. I expect a dog park to accommodate both the owners and the dogs, at least have some real grass and some benches that are maintained. read more

Maybe I'm giving the low rating because I just came from there and I am feeling....well....a lot of emotions, but I will be honest in saying I have been feeling this way for quite some time. Pros: There are two dog areas. A smaller yet still large area for dogs under 25 pounds, and a larger area marked for all dogs (although locals will tell you it's only for big dogs.). There is plenty of water for both sections and locals are always bringing toys, like tennis balls. Cons: There is hardly any shade. There is a small cover that is shared by both sides. (Apparently a word has been put in with the city for more shade with no plans in the making.) The shade that is there is too small for the amount of dogs and their owners that come. The bark covering the ground is horrible. My poor dogs paws have been banged up a number of times from running around on it. Also it is pretty hard to find your dogs tootsie rolls when it is the same color as the bark, hence there is poop everywhere. Lastly, and this is the biggest con, people bring their untrained and aggressive dogs to this park. Too many times I have seen people bring their dogs to this park who just don't care what their dogs do to other dogs or even people. They fight, hump, pick on other dogs, push people or kids over, and poop up a storm. Their owners just sit their, or are on their phones, encourage the behavior, or on a couple of cases I have seen people just sitting in their car. I've been to other dog parks, even the dog beach in SC, where this this is not the case. I'm leaving the low rating, not to much because of the park set up, but because of all the bad experiences I have had here with people not caring about their dogs behavior. (I do apologize to and want to acknowledge all the great people I have met this park who do care about their dogs and about how they behave. You guys are great! I really did try to give this park a try, but I'm thinking today might be my last day. Happy Holidays and I'll miss you!) For those of you saying this park looks trashy with the french and the bark: This park used to be a parking lot for special events, hence its appearance. I do agree that the city should spruce it up. Like the other reviews I must agree. Trashy and not very well kept. Also I feel like somebody just fenced of the area and dumped bark all over. Theres even huge piles of it just sitting in the big dog area. Why? I have yet to see a dog or human make use of this. Why not some grass or even turf? Would you walk on that barefoot? Why do you think your dog would want to? If any changes are to be made id be more than happy to donate my time to make it better. If nothing changes....nothing changes. read more

As to the park itself, it's in Skypark and that's a GREAT Park period. Sure, it could have grass, but I don't see the dogs minding at all. The dogs just have BIG FUN in general. Like anywhere, any big cons are always just any irresponsible owners/dogs, if present, not the park itself, and I see very few of those. It consistently HAS some, or LOTS, of dogs to play with, weekends anyway. Like any dog park, if you see an aggressive dog, mention it and leave. read more

This park is great. Big grassy area, great for flying kites or playing ball, small and large play structures aimed at little and bigger kids. A long paved pick/scooter path. A dog park with enclosures for small and large dogs. A shady area with picnic tables. They have a 4th of July Fireworks show, an Annual Art and Wine Festival. AND it is walking distance to PEET'S, the movies, and Tony and Alba's Pizza. read more

There are a few regulars with hostile, aggressive dogs that are ruining this dog park. Last week, my two husky-mix dogs and I were attacked OUTSIDE the dog park by an off-leash dog, running to get into the dog park. There are about ten regulars who bring their aggressive dogs here, every day, chat up other regulars, and look the other way as their dogs attack yet another dog, I have watched the same people look surprised as their dogs attack, yet again. I care too much about my dogs to continue coming here. You have been warned! If you have to come here; stay focused, stay near your dog, and keep a leash with you so you can pull an attacking dog off your dog. Expect to pay the vet bills yourself. The aggressive owners will blame you for having a "submissive dog". My dogs and I go to Its Beach and Aptos Polo Fields/Dog Park and have NEVER had a problem.
