This shop too has stock of this nature, but a lot of the shampoo etc is in the lower band of quality and looks a bit dusty on top. Jewellery looks fairly cheap and uninspiring but it would do as a stocking filler. However, my shampoo snobbery aside this is a DIY shop, so it doesn't have to be expert in any other area. It's perfectly adequate in suppling the community with screws and hooks and whatnot, with a small selection of drills. It would come in handy if you were doing a spot of decorating and realised your drill was just that bit too big for the screw you were trying to fit. There's a supply of batteries but they're the Powercell ones, which aren't durable except for low powered appliances such as alarm clocks etc. Not somewhere you'd visit if you needed an extensive, top of the range tool kit, but handy and cheap if you're caught on the hop.

The prices can be a bit more than other diy places but the 10% weekends are really handy.

Whether it's to pick up a new plant or just some Baby-Bio this place rocks! In addition to plants they also have paint, wallpaper and a lighting department. My Mums favourite section is the "Bargain Section" and we once found a lovely picture which had no price on it. When we asked the guy at the desk he said if we made a donation in one of their charity boxes then we could have it, donating to a good cause and getting a lovely picture, fantastic! The staff here are really helpful and will even assist you to your car if you get a bit carried away buying too many wares.

If you get to one of these sections are a little overwhelmed by your vast choice, it's really easy to catch a member of passing staff who will be able to point you in the direction of certain products, or a line of products, that best suit your purposes. As Eleanor mentioned, should you go slightly shopping mad 0 and it's easy let me tell you - the staff are super helpful at the checkout and will happily help you out to the car with your load. Favourite sections of this store have got to include the gardening section outside; the lighting section and, of course, the bargain section. This last one is extremely random and most of the time you won't find anything you NEED there but it's worth glancing over on the way to the checkouts.

I think of Screwfix as a cross between B&Q and Argos. It's really aimed at the tradesperson market,…read moreso often you can get things in bulk so much cheaper than you would for smaller quantities. Picture hooks provide the perfect example. £5.23 for a pack of 100 in Screwfix, £5.10 for a pack of 25 in B&Q. Admittedly the Screwfix deal is probably going to equip a normal person with a lifetime's supply of picture hooks, but who doesn't love a bargain! It's not always cheaper though, so I generally always do a comparison of suppliers. Another recent example - taps. Basic basin mixer tap, very similar models, turned out to be slightly cheaper in B&Q. For wee things like electric switches, ceiling roses, or even bigger items like radiators, Screwfix can be very good, but it's worth checking. One disadvantage to Screwfix is that, like Argos, you can't see the actual goods - you pick them out of a catalogue and someone brings it to you. This is fine if you're a tradesperson and know exactly what you're after. Not so fine if you're not and you don't, or you want to see the quality of the article. Sometimes, you'll get one of the older gents who knows his stuff and is happy to advise. Sometimes, you're on your own. On a more recent visit, to buy toilet flush gubbins, we were approached by a member of staff who asked if we needed any help. We did need help so explained our situation. His response was 'I'm actually here to provide more along the lines of spiritual guidance, rather than anything technical'. Eh whit? If I want spiritual advice I'll head for the nearest church pal, not a hardware store. Pfft. Clearly he was trying to be funny, and admittedly it was quite amusing, but we did actually need technical advice, and found it lacking. Anyway, after returning the 3rd lot of flushing gubbins, we are failing to see the funny side, have abandoned the whole sorry situation and I'm getting a man in to fix it.

So for years Dwell have sent me their dreamy catalogue and for years I have happily sat ripping out items adding them to my home makeover mood board (it's a rather large board, their furniture is just gorgeous!). Then, when I decided that after 12 years I needed to grow up and have a table and chairs like a proper adult this was my obvious starting place. Sadly the fab table I wanted was too big for my space, sob, so I reluctantly chose one from elsewhere but I did settle on some gorgeous walnut and white padded dining chairs. The great thing about this shop is that they carry a large stock selection, much more than the Princes Square store, so I was able to go in and sit on said chairs to try them out for comfort. While doing so the staff were only too happy to assist, asking if I wanted the chair moved to a table so I could see what that would be like too. Decision made, these were definitely the chairs I wanted. Delivery to home incurred a hefty charge (the usual...) so I ordered for free store delivery instead as I live just a couple of miles away. The store phoned when they arrived in and even took them out to the car for me, such brilliant service! I may have also purchased an awesome (but completely unnecessary!) floor lamp in their sale on one of my visits and again, I didn't have to lift a finger as it was taken to my car too. All in, a great store located just off London Road with plenty parking, vast selection of furniture and home accessories, and great, friendly service. Not the cheapest of furniture but they tend to have 15 or 20% off full price items fairly regularly so keep an eye out for that :-D

Filled to the very brim with all that you would imagine of a place like this and more, i really cant be any more enthusiastic about this place. Having lived in this general area for the last 5 -6 years, this has always been my first stop when i have the "eh....is that broken?" moment. With a remedy for my home ailment usually in stock and a helpfull handy owner always willing to offer help and assistance a the drop of a hardhat (boom, boom!!), the West End Hardware is the finest of place to be.......
