You are able to pull up a map of the 20 plus sculptures online and make a day of visiting each piece. The sculpture was commissioned by the school to celebrate its centennial and was funded by an anonymous donor. This abstract metal and glass sculpture stands 16 feet high and is the work of Beverly Stucker Precious, president of Precious Design Studios. It was made in 2002 and is a product of limestone, stainless steel, bronze, and Precious' signature dichroic glass. Precious incorporated all those materials in he piece to give it a dramatic kinetic effect. I did not see it though, but I still find this piece impressive, which is saying a lot because I am not a big abstract art fan. The piece gives you a different view as you change your perspective on it. It is hard to describe, but I will give it a shot. It is a large circular structure that is intersected at the bottom by a flat iron shape that is folded into a tent shape. The intersection is where the colorful glass formations are. This is one of the most impressive and eyecatching pieces in the UIndy collection. It is best viewed on a sunny day with the sun reflecting off the stainless steel and through the glass of the pieces. You can not miss this piece. I saw it from across the quad. There is a lot of parking available in the area by the sculpture, but most of it requires a student/staff parking pass. But that did not stop me. I found some visitors spots and was not there very long. As with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful public art pieces in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. As I mentioned, you could download the Art Walk map that is online and make it a half a day or so.

My favorite sculpture on the UofIndy campus is Universal Continuum. This 16' sculpture features…read moregeometric shapes made from burnished metal and dichroic glass to catch the light. The piece rests on sculpted limestone. The sculpture has a large curved shape ending as a point on the east side that is bisected by an angled disk that has a large hole in the middle. There are additional curved tubes for support on the west side of the sculpture. The imbalance of the large angled disk when combined with the light gives the piece a sense of movement or impending movement. Internationally acclaimed sculptor Beverly Precious created this site specific piece for the entrance to Krannert Library in 2002. Review #1702

This is a mural that is not actually painted directly on the wall. It consists of six individual…read morepanels mounted on a wall to form one picture. It is a small mural, even with the 6 panels. It is the work of Matt Eickoff and was made in 2007. Even though it has been around a while, it is still in great shape. The colors are very vivid and bright. The artist intended to display his experience with riding the bus to work by incorporating mini narratives between all of the people at the bus stop in the mural. It tells a story of sorts. The mural also has the city scape in the background. The mural is located on the side of Financial Health FCU, overlooking a small parking lot and facing MuckRock's Fire, Fire mural. So, parking and getting out to get a closer look at this mural is simple and easy, if that is what you want to do. This piece is very busy, but it works and I like it you can see the story the the artist is trying to tell and the colors really pop. As with most all murals that I have reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 3 minutes. The sculpture entitled The Farmer sits in ArtsPark that is located behind the Indianapolis Art…read moreCenter. It is tucked away in the woods right in front of one of the most popular pieces in the park, Twisted House. The Farmer has seen better days. It is pretty worn. It was created in 2008 by Matt Crane. The piece just sits in the woods. The sculpture stands about 6 feet and is made of two halves of iron put together to form what appears to be a man. You can see where the pieces seams are broken. I am not sure if it was intentional or not. As you know, iron is very corrosive and so the sculpture is very rusted. It is almost hard to make out what it is. Fortunately, this piece is part of a larger collection of pieces at the ArtsPark and in addition to seeing this piece. You can see other pieces as well to maximize your visit. And to top it all off. it is all free.

This rusted cast iron sculpture shows a man about 6' in height that is formed by two halves, a front and back piece, that don't match exactly so that there is a clearly visible seam, sometimes with openings, in the piece. I didn't see anything on the artist's website that explained why the pieces weren't aligned correctly, but that's art. Review #1557

I guess it was moved to it current location at some point, which is actually where they list the sculpture titled Caterpillar. Caterpillar's information plaque is still over there and is laying on top of Temple's cement pad. I could not find the Caterpillar structure. This abstract steel sculpture is the work of Reverend Austin Collins. When I approached it, I was uncertain if the piece was a sculpture or if it was a piece of the schools fire fighting apparatus or piping. It is also very fade and weathered. The red paint is very dull. It is part of a series of sculptures titled Temple. They are on exhibit all around the country. This is the 18th in the series obviously. FYI, the 6th one in the series is located downtown at IUPUI. This is the definition of an abstract piece and I cannot even start to describe it. I also do not know Reverend Collins' inspiration for the piece or what it signifies. Being that the sculpture is located on the UIndy campus there is a lot of parking available, however, most of it requires a parking permit. I just parked in an open spot, got out and took a closer look. I was not in the spot long. As with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. Temple VI is located on the IUPUI campus, while Temple XVIII is found on the north side of the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center on the campus of the University of Indianapolis. The red metal tower is primarily affixed to a single four sided steel pole. There is a small adornment along the base for support, some finer metal twists along the length, and a pair of crowning shapes stacked on top of the pole. Review #1701

My family and I was in town from Lousiville on a weekend getaway while my daughter has cheer comp. Her competition was a few miles down the road at the convention center when we decided to take a post comp lounge at the popular Bluebeard and check out the public art in its surrounding area. Upon parking in the rear of the establishment and walking around we discovered 3-4 interesting pieces including this one. Obviously this mural is a subject matter of the national covid 19 virus that is weeping the nation currently and has been for about 2 years. The mural boasts that people should mask up and look forward to a bright future. Being as every single aspect of covid 19 has been a heated political debate I'm sure this mural will bring mixed feelings. Hopefully the mural will go without being vandalized because hopefully in the distant future when this is all behind us this can be a mural of history and portray a piece of in the moment thinking. I often think how cool it would be to see some of the public art from the 60's with all the movements and changes then. Overall artist did a good job. Not the largest but has bright and bold colors and a message and subject Matter that makes it stick out.

From what I can gather they are murals commissioned by local artists. I'm going to see how many I can find! This first one is called Harmony by Ethan Culleton. Located on the jiffy lube in Broadripple is this beautiful painting, art means something different to everyone, Harmony is a beautiful combination of different jars. The differences make something great. I could be reaching? In either case it's a lovey painting, and a great project that the DPW and jiffy lube collaborated on. Can't wait to visit more!

Not sure if you knew it, but the Jiffy Lube's of central Indiana have begun commissioning public…read moreart on the sides of their businesses. One of the early murals was "Harmony" in 2016 by Ethan Culleton and DPW (Department of Public Words). The mural has the word Harmony written in the background, with a table setting of many colored glass containers. In May of 2016, local artists Blice-Edwards created a mural on the north wall of the Boulevard…read morePlace Cafe along 42nd Street. The mural is a scenic with crossing paths and a boy heading toward an intersection with lots of crossroads markers in the center. The rest of the mural has colorful flowers in the forefront and a woodland surrounding the paths. There are lots of names along the bottom of the mural which I assume are contributing artists, possibly volunteers who helped Blice-Edwards paint the mural. Review #1525

This sculpture is located in Mars Hill Pocket Park, which is right in front of the Community Caring…read moreand Sharing Center. It is the work of Quincy Owens and Luke Crawley. It stands 16 feet high and was made in late 2017. It is made of weathering steel, aluminum, colorful acrylic panels. The artists wanted to create a physical embodiment of the people and work the Sharing Center. The give a little more background on this sculpture, and to make a short story long, Elden Palmer of nearby Palmer Trucks donated the building that is currently used by the Community Caring and Sharing Center. They had previously operated out of houses. Palmer trucking logo and branding featured a palm tree, which is a symbol of victory. So, the artist built the sculpture as an honor to Palmer and victory or overcoming, which is the strength of the Sharing Center. The piece is a nice one. It has a rusted steel base, a translucent center portion that sunlight can beam through and an aluminum top portion. It is the center piece of the park. There is a decent sized lot to park at, get out and get a closer look of the sculpture. Well, as with most public art I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops or making it part of a larger itinerary. In 2018, a new sculptural piece was added to the grounds of the Community Caring and Sharing…read moreCenter. Drawing upon ties to the Center, the community of Mars Hill, and some ancient culture, the sculpture created was called "Palm". When you look at it, think palm tree, not palm of your hand. That might help. The piece is quite abstract, especially since there are no fronds. Think of how a palm tree is light and airy at the top and transitions to a firm base to anchor the tree. That I can see. The top of the piece is translucent and lets light filter through before transitioning to solid panels, and then a brown patina on the metal base.
