The park takes its name from the fresh water marshes, also called savannas that used to line Florida's coast. This park contains the largest freshwater marsh in southeast Florida. I entered the park at the trailhead on Jensen Beach Boulevard but there is an Environmental Education Center at 2541 SE Walton Rd, Port St. Lucie. The center is open Thursday through Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m while Savannas Preserve State Park is open every day from 8 AM to sunset. There is a lock box where you insert you $3 cash admission. Located adjacent to the parking lot is a picnic pavilion and restrooms. From the parking lot I took the white trail which connects to trails north of Walton road. Unfortunately trail conditions become submerged during parts of the year which was the case when I visited. I took off my shoes and went barefoot and attempted the trail anyway. The grass was very soft in the dry parts but I finally lost the trail in the water at the turnoff for the marsh overlook. I found myself in the middle of the water and after seeing the alligator sign at the start of the trail I decide it wasn't such a good idea to be there and headed back. I still got a good over a mile hike in. I need to come back when the trail is dried out. Although I didn't see any animals, bobcats, deer, the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, alligators, Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, Great Blue Heron, and the endangered Florida Scrub-jay all make their home in the park. I was the only one on the trail and it was very peaceful and quiet. Savannas Preserve State Park offers canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers can enjoy the diverse habitat and undisturbed solitude. They are 8 miles of trails for use by equestrians and hikers.

You have pretty much everything you can think of in this park with a very large parking lot. If your kid loves baseball, there's always baseball games going on and there's also a playground for kids to enjoy. I haven't really explored the whole park on foot, only driven by since the skating area is all the way in the back. It's pretty new. I heard they just filled it in. I would say it's like the size of a normal skating area you would find at an indoor rink. I will come more often, but it is a 20 minute drive and they're doing a lot of construction on the roads that I take together. I wish there was more of these skating areas in different parts of Port St. Lucie.

Park amenities include a baseball/softball field, football field, playground, pickle ball court, volleyball net, and restrooms. There is a large 35x25 pavilion with electricity and two 16x16 pavilions that can be rented for private events. Whispering Pines also has a 14 court tennis center which is shared by the Parks and Recreation Department and the High School. You can sign up for lessons at the tennis center and the courts service all levels of players, from beginners to professionals. The fields are lighted and the park is open every day from 8 AM to 10 PM. My favorite part of the park was watching the birds. While I was walking around two Sandhill cranes came by. I don't get to see them in South Florida so it is always a treat to find them when I travel north. These two characters were hollering at the top of their lungs. It was the first time I've ever heard the call of a Sandhill Crane. This is a really beautiful and well maintained park providing sports, leisure activities, picnics, and events for the community of Port St Lucie.

The park has two wooden boardwalk paths that cross over the mangroves to a 30 foot boardwalk and observation deck. The boardwalk is green. It is made out of recycled materials with a solar lighting system and thermoplastic handrails. The observation desk can be rented for private events. This is a very popular place to fish and I saw many people with their catch of tarpon, snook, and redfish. Humans weren't the only ones having luck with the fish. I had a wonderful time watching the wild birds swoop and dive into the river to grab their dinner. This is the perfect place to get some exercise, take in the beautiful view of the river, or watch the sun set.

Midpoint has a fitness station located next to the street with several pieces of equipment to work different parts of the body. There are no restrooms or water fountains. This park is ideal for fishing but note that nonmotorized watercraft are not allowed on the lake. During my visit people were enjoying a picnic while someone else was allowing their dog to play at the waters edge which is never a good idea because you need to assume that if there is a lake in Florida, there are alligators present. In fact there was a sign warning of alligators. This park also turned out to be a great place to birdwatch. I enjoyed watching a blue jay and the water will attract native wading birds. If you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy nature, Midport Lake Neighborhood Park is a peaceful place.

The tennis courts were added in 1925. The town's first community center was built in the park in 1935. During WWII it served as a club for Navy personnel training at the airport. After the war it was again used as a community center until a new one was built just north of it. The original center is now The Heritage Center with a museum dedicated to the citrus industry. A plaque outside the building commemorates the spot in Pocahontas Park where on July 2, 1925 William Jennings Bryan delivered a speech for the county's inaugural festivities. Today families visiting the historic Vero Beach downtown area can still enjoy this charming park that has delighted generations of families. We paddled thru the scenic St. Lucie River on the North Fork and observing all the gorgeous oak hammocks bordering either side. Amazing how tranquil the trip is, you would have thought you were in a time warp, because this surely represents how Olde Florida used to be. Just think it is in our backyard and it is FREE.
